Anyone who is using Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2016 to connect to their Outlook.com account who has not removed the Outlook.com EAS account from their profile and added it back using auto account setup, will need to make the change ASAP. EAS accounts have stopped working as Microsoft blocked Outlook desktop as an Exchange Active Sync (EAS) client for Outlook.com users.
This protocol was blocked for Office 365 business users against Exchange Online (and in on-premise Exchange Servers) because it offered a very poor user experience. EAS was designed to provide a good experience using the lightweight mail clients found on smartphones and not well suited to Outlook but it was enabled for Outlook.com accounts to make migration to the new server easier. However, due to issues that are amplified by having many people use Outlook EAS, Microsoft is shutting EAS access off for all Outlook desktop users. Smartphone apps are not affected, they will still be able to using EAS. Only Outlook desktop is affected.
If you are using an outside address, you'll need to add an alias to your account in order to set it up in Outlook. Instructions are at Add an Alias to an Outlook.com Account.
Using the full Microsoft Exchange to connect is by far the best option, with full access to all Outlook and Exchange features available in consumer accounts. Some users switched back to EAS to avoid an Outlook.com bug where, under certain, specific conditions, all replies where sent using the Outlook.com account. These users will need to remove the EAS account from their profile and use auto account setup to add it back. (To work around the bug, users can set a pst file as default if they want to avoid selecting the correct account each time they reply.)
If an account is blocked before a user makes the switch, the account will stop syncing. When EAS is shut off, Microsoft will put an email into the mailbox telling the user to remove the account and reconnect to Outlook.com. Any appointments, contacts, tasks, or notes added after it stopped syncing will be lost when you remove the account from Outlook.
Reconnect Outlook.com to Outlook
Switching to Microsoft Exchange account type is simple to do:
- Open File and click Add (or File, Account Settings, New)
- Type in your email address then click Next. The name and password fields can be left blank for Outlook.com and Office 365 Exchange accounts. Outlook will ask for your password if it doesn't find it in the Windows Credential Manager. Your display name is picked up from your Microsoft account.

- Restart Outlook after the account is added.
- Switch to the calendar module and display both Outlook.com account calendars side-by-side. If any appointments are missing from the Exchange calendar (likely labeled Calendar - email@outlook.com (1)), drag them to the Exchange calendar.
Tip: If you know you added a number of new items that are not on the server, use a list view on the calendar to see how many are in each folder (count is in the status bar). Sort by dates to find the missing events or use Instant search. The search criteria is datemodified:>1/21/2017. - Repeat with Contacts (use any view except People to get the item count), Tasks, and Notes (if used).
- After you have moved unsynced items over, go to File, Account Settings and Remove the EAS account.

- Restart Outlook and the (1) should be removed from the account name and folder list.
More Information
A reminder for Outlook 2007 users connecting to Outlook.com or Office 365 Exchange: you'll need to upgrade before October 31 2017 as Outlook 2007 will no longer connect using Microsoft Exchange account type. POP and IMAP will be supported but are email only, calendar and contacts will stop syncing.

krishnan says
hello,
how do i convert my pop3/imap to an exchange account (step-by-step guide needed)
Diane Poremsky says
Are you using Outlook.com email? As long as you have Outlook 2010 and newer, auto account setup should add the account as an exchange account.
If you don't use outlook.com address (includes hotmail, msn, live domain) you can't add the account as exchange,.
Rajiv says
Hi Diane, suddenly emails stopped syncing to my Outlook 2016 Mac client and also on iPhone Mail and Outlook apps. I removed the account on iPhone and re-connected yet it still doesn't work. It says 'can't connect with server'. However, I'm able to access emails on Outlook.com. Could you advise a workaround?
Diane Poremsky says
I've seen several other report similar issues - so it could be a server side issue. It would effect the apps, not outlook on the web.
Rajiv says
Could you advise how we could possibly resolve the issue? Maybe you've come across an article about it...
Diane Poremsky says
If its server side, Microsoft needs to fix it. I'm waiting to hear from my contacts.
Jeff says
Hi Diane. Do you have any input on using Hotmail/Outlook.com on iPads please? After migrating to Microsoft exchange the Mail client has been very unreliable whilst Outlook has worked fine. Issues such as emails not appearing in the inbox yet traceable in search, the server losing its alias and bizarrely from time to time all historic emails appearing in the draft folder.
Diane Poremsky says
The outlook app seems to work fine here. Did you remove and re-add the account? Is the account set up as outlook.com or Exchange? (In the past, adding it as Exchange allowed the contacts to sync but apple may have made the outlook.com option identical now that the migration is finished.)
John says
I cannot connect my private desktop Outlook 2016 to Outlook.com.
Each time I have tried using the auto feature in 2016 it connects with EAS,
leaves an email telling me I need to reconnect and imports a blank calendar
which bears the correct name of the calendar I use in Outlook.com but not
its contents.
My Windows Phone connects with Outlook.com perfectly using EAS.
Diane Poremsky says
EAS no longer works in Outlook desktop (since Feb 2017) - autoaccount setup should add it as a full Microsoft Exchange account but it sounds like the autodiscover records on your computer are goofy. Try the manual option and enter your outlook.com address in the Office 365 field.
You could try going to %localappdata%\microsoft\outlook (paste it in the address field in File Explorer) and deleting the autodiscover.xml files.
John says
Diane
Trying the Office 365 route, Outlook 2016 couldn't find a encrypted
connection and, after trying for an unencrypted connection said it
was sorry but could not set up an account automatically, suggesting
I should try manually which I thought I had just done.
Deleting the autodiscover files didn't seem to have an effect.
Diane Poremsky says
Are you using multifactor authentication? At this time, you need to use app passwords with outlook.com accounts - Outlook won't bring up the dialog that asks for the code with the consumer accounts (but will for the business accounts).
John says
No. I'm certainly not using any app passwords. How does an
individual rather than a business proceed in that case?
Diane Poremsky says
Slowly and hope for the best. :( Try Microsoft's Answer Desk - you might get lucky and get someone who understands the problem and knows who to forward it to.
Henare says
Great articale Diane, thanks for the tip about the alias.
Tried getting support for this issue from Microsoft, emailing back and forth for 6 weeks. I wish someone there new about their own products.
Victor says
I just realizes i don't have a microsoft account. Is it necessary? I have been using my gmail to sign into outlook.com
Diane Poremsky says
At this time (but changing some time this summer or fall), you do need an outlook.com alias to sign into outlook.com using a gmail microsoft account. They are testing a cloud service that will sync gmail to outlook.com - when they is enabled on your account, you won't need an outlook.com alias.
It's in early testing and is currently only available to Outlook for mac - coming later this year to outlook windows.
Stephen says
Hi Diane, I am having this exact issue - there seems to be conflict when you add a Google Apps account and a Hotmail account in the same Outlook profile.
You used to be able to do this when you could still set up a Hotmail account using EAS, but ever since Microsoft started forced you to connect Hotmail using the Exchange server, there have bee all kinds of issues.
As a temporary fix, I have been connecting my Hotmail account as an IMAP account, but this is not ideal as it causes performance issues and doesn't allow me to access my Hotmail contacts or calendar in Outlook.
I am shocked that Microsoft hasn't come up with a solution for this yet, as it has been almost a year. The solution you mentioned above sounds promising. Any update on when it might be released and how exactly it will work?
Thanks!
Diane Poremsky says
I don't have any information at this time on a solution. Sorry.
Victor says
Ma'am. You used a ".outlook.com" for your email account. Didn't respond. Do i have to set up a new email or what?
Diane Poremsky says
You won't need a new account, but you do need to add an outlook.com alias to the microsoft account for now... (this requirement may change later this year.)
How to add an alias: https://www.outlook-tips.net/outlookcom/add-alias-outlook-com-account/
Girish Tekwani says
Hi Diane,
I had both my work account (google apps account) & my hotmail account setup within Outlook 2016 and they were working perfectly fine with email, calendar & contacts syncing. With this switch to exchange, I'm having problems sending email. After some research on the net, I found out that one cannot have a google apps and exchange account under the same outlook profile. One would have to create two profiles and keep switching between them. Currently I'm using the Outlook / Hotmail webmail interface to send my email to email addresses that are not within my address book. I use Outlook 2016 to receive email, calendar and contacts sync.
Is there a fix for this issue ? I really need help.
regards,
GT
Diane Poremsky says
Assuming you need the sync utility for calendar & contacts, no fix native to Outlook right now, but one is coming in the next 6 months or so... they are working on syncing Google calendar & contacts to the "Microsoft Cloud" - then you won't need the sync app. In the meantime, you could use IMAP and companionlink or gsyncit to sync the calendar & contacts.
If you don't need calendar & contacts, add the account as IMAP.
The other option is to use Windows Mail for the google account - it's not as full featured as Outlook, but beats using 2 profiles and will sync the calendar & contacts.
Alex says
So does this mean that outlook.com accounts use MAPI over HTTP as the protocol? I haven't looked in to what the outlook.com autodiscover service returns; I can understand them blocking Outlook since most users would set their entire mailbox to download which is incredibly slow over ActiveSync.
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, Outlook.com uses MAPI over HTTPS now that it's moved to the Office 365 system.
Mike Hall says
Hi Diane,
I just spotted this line "To work around the bug, users can set a pst file as default". Having tried this it does indeed seem to get around the bug - are there any downsides to setting a pst file as default instead of the .ost associated with the Outlook.com account?
Diane Poremsky says
When you do this, the default calendar & contacts is changed to the pst - this means outlook today and the calendar on the to-do bar is blank. Newly created items go in the default folders - you'd need to move them.
Nic says
Hi Diane,
I’ve had the emails to changes my accounts to the new setup in Outlook 2016,
I create a new profile and add then settings in outlook,
I have an outlook.com alias and also my domain added as an alias, auto discover is setup for my domain name.
If I use the outlook.com alias email address then in outlook 2016 the email address used is the randomlettersnumbers@outlook.com
If I try with my domain name I get 'the name cannot be matched to a name in the address list'.
This is really frustrating and has been going on for a few weeks now with no fix found.
I’ve worked in IT for many years including exchange setup and deployment and have never had this issue before.
Any advice gratefully received.

Nic
Diane Poremsky says
With the move to the office 365 exchange infrastructure, you can't log in using non-outlook.com domains. If the domain is part of the outlook.com custom domain program, you need DNS records for autodiscover, then it should work.
To get rid of the outlook_ugly address, set the outlook.com alias as the primary address on the account - you may also need to set it as the default email address in outlook.com options.
Billy Madison says
Hi there - I have confirmed that my Outlook.com account was updated by visually checking for the new graphics in Outlook.com. I then removed my account in Outlook 2016 and then tried to add it again using the autodiscover process that normally results in an Exchange account being created.
Instead of creating the Exchange account, Outlook hangs for about 3 minutes and then creates an IMAP account. I have tried setup several times, and each time it just creates an IMAP account.
I have tried removing the autodiscover registry entries and XML files, which didn't help.
What can I do?
Diane Poremsky says
Is it an outlook.com address? if you are using an address not owned by microsoft, it will add it using the servers your domain uses. You need to create an outlook.com alias.
How many exchange accounts? There is a 10 Exchange account limit and if you add more, it may go in as imap or eas. You need to set the MaxNumExchange key to a higher value. Instructions at https://www.slipstick.com/exchange/maximum-number-exchange-accounts-outlook-profile/
Martin says
Have done the change and got an Microsoft Exchange connection. Unfortunately my Outlook 2013 stopped sending out e-mails. It's just hanging after klicking the send button. Any ideas?
Diane Poremsky says
Any send and receive error messages? Does mail download ok?
Harald says
I have removed the EAS Hotmail account (deleted the profile) and recreated the profile. But still it appears as an EAS connection on my PC (Win7 64bits, Outlook 2013) and only the folder structure is synchronized. If I do it on my wife's PC (win10, Outlook 2013) the connection is created as an Exchange connection.
Any ideas?
Diane Poremsky says
If there is an auto discover file pointing to the old server, outlook will use it to set up the account. go to %localappdata%\Microsoft\outlook and delete the xml files then try again.
If your account was recently moved, try again in 24 hours.
Keith Snell says
Can you please clarify your statement that Outlook 2007 users "need to upgrade before October 31 2017." I'm not sure if this means that anyone using Outlook 2007 will not be able to set up a new connection using exchange, or if existing Outlook 2007 users will loose their exchange connection as of 31 October 2017. Is Microsoft really shutting off exchange access to outlook.com for Outlook 2007 users on October 31st?
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, they are. After October 31, 2017, Outlook 2007 will not be able to connect to Office 365 servers - both business and consumer (outlook.com) are affected. After that date, only MAPI over HTTPS will be able to connect, and outlook 2007 only uses classic MAPI.
In the past, Exchange only supported the current version of Outlook and 2 past - this would be outlook 2016, 2013 and 2010. They shoe-horned outlook 2007 in but it did not support a lot of the features in Exchange 2016.
Ashley T says
My outlook.com email has stopped working on the desktop version of Outlook 2013 which I use to manage the emails on behalf a client.
I have followed the advise on Microsoft's support pages and various threads, but every time I remove and add the email again, it is still marked as 'Exchange ActiveSync' and any attempt at a manual setup is unsuccessful.
I receive an automated email to advise of the changes to outlook.com each time I add the account, but nothing else can be sent or received. I am currently having to use the website to view activity on this account.
We have multiple users who have access to the account, but I think I have removed it from each of their devices.
Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Diane Poremsky says
They turned off EAS. It sounds like outlook is using an old autodiscover record. If it's still not working, open the registry and delete the outlook.com autodiscover records at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover\RedirectServers
Andreas says
Deleted the autodiscover records, and the xml files under %localappdata%Microsoftoutlook, but when adding the outlook.com account it is still marked as 'Exchange ActiveSync'. Any further tips?
Diane Poremsky says
Your account was moved to the new server? (A very few are still on the old server- these are account that also sign into windows phone and have custom ringtones set.)
I'll check with support and see if they have any suggestions.
Devin says
Also have that same issue. I've tried several different live.com accounts (created before Outlook.com was a thing), completely deleting the profile, clearing the registry entries mentioned above, etc. but Outlook 2013 simply will not work. Each time I recreate the profile (probably a dozen attempts now) I see that same "upgrade" email appear, and that's it. The same accounts worked fine on another computer, just not this one (both are Windows 10, although the one not working is Pro while the other is Home).
Diane Poremsky says
Do you have all updates installed? If not identical version numbers, are home and pro version # close?
Devin says
It's updated as much as auto-update will detect. Interestingly, on the version that works seems to be slightly older than the one that does. The computer with the issue is listed as 15.0.4903.1000, while the one that works is 15.0.4893.1000. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that this cannot be fixed. A Chat with a MS rep resulted in nothing but 2 hours wasted. Was hoping to come across something in a forum, but so far nothing's worked. At some point when I have time I'm going to try to completely uninstall Office 2013 and clean it up as much as possible then re-install. It's the only thing I can think to do (I did uninstall just Outlook and that didn't work).
Diane Poremsky says
As an FYI on office 2013 - you'll need to download the setup file- https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/2013/office-2013-removed-office-portal/
Neither version should enter the account as an active sync account (which is what triggers the message) - it could be an autodiscover issue, but that usually clears within 48 hours of moving the account.
Helen says
Hi Diane,.
I use Outlook 2013 to connect to Outlook.com Hotmail account. Because EAS stopped working I created a new email profile and then added the email address using the auto account setup.
It all seemed to work ok except that when I go into any email folder with greater than 6 or 10 emails or so I am always forced to click on a link which goes off to a Microsoft Server and then comes back and displays the rest of the emails.
Is there anything I can do, or is there any setting I can change so that I don't have to constantly do that. It's a real nuisance especially when I go in and out of the same folder a few times a.day.
Hope you can help.
Regards
Helen
Diane Poremsky says
Everything should sync down. Were these older messages? Go to File, Account Settings and double click on the account - what is the sync slider setting?
Christoph says
Hi,
I have tried this several times, but every time I try to set up the outlook.com account (with my outlook.com address), outlook 2013 crashes: "Outlook has stopped working". It collects data and then shuts down.
Any idea what can be done about that?
P.S. my outlook is fully updated....
Diane Poremsky says
This when you add the account? Try adding it from Control panel. If it happens when you restart Outlook, hold Ctrl and click on the outlook icon to start it in Safe mode. Does it start ok?
Rob Kippel says
If I signed up for an Outlook.com account with my yahoo email as my username (i.e. I dont have an _______@outlook.com email just an account that syncs my other emails via IMAP) how do I set up a microsoft exchange account in Outlook desktop 2013? W.hen I add a manual account Im asked for a server and username. Can't find what Outlook.com's server is.
Diane Poremsky says
You cannot add these 3rd party accounts to Outlook - it won't work with Auto account setup. You'll need to add an outlook.com alias to the account then log in using the alias.
Instructions are at https://www.outlook-tips.net/outlookcom/add-alias-outlook-com-account/
Lynda says
ooookay. now that two people in my company have tried this, and both lost their calendars and contacts, how do we reconnect when Outlook does not complete the connection via the automation?
Diane Poremsky says
There is only one way to connect outlook 2007 and newer to Outlook.com if you want to sync calendar & contacts - using autoaccount setup.
What version of Outlook do they use?
Do you get any error messages?
Are all updates installed? (required for Outlook 2007/2010)
Lynda says
All Windows 7 and Outlook 2013 updates are installed. There are no error messages but the system will not complete the install and says to try again. We were using an email assocated with the users Live account.
We created an alias with an outlook.com email address and the autoaccount setup completed. Right now we are examining the various effects caused by this and it mostly is being careful about the sending email, needing to switch default accounts..that sort of thing.
Diane Poremsky says
If you don't have a custom domain in Outlook.com, you definitely need to use an outlook.com address to set it up as exchange. If you use a custom domain (either the old grandfathered or new version), as long as your dns records have an autodiscover record pointing to autodiscover.outlook.com, it *should* work (if the account is enabled to be used for logins).
Bennett says
I have multiple accounts on custom domains and there is a bug preventing the re-connect. Even adding CNAME entry with autodiscover address does not work. My support request got elevated and they said there is a known bug and they are working on it :(
Diane Poremsky says
Were these the old grandfathered custom domains? Did they have you add an outlook.com alias? Not sure if that will trigger something to mess up the cusomt domain tho.

Hi Diane - really need help here. I use Outlook 2016 for both my work and personal needs. Work uses an Exchange Server Account. When I add my outlook.com account as a second exchange account, my sent mail shows the following in my saved mail from line:-O=FIRST ORGANIZATION-OU=EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE. I have the impression the profile now can't tell how to deal with two exchange servers. Have you seen this? Is there a fix? I have been using the Outlook desktop for years with EAS for my outlook.com mail. Consequently, I have a lot of material on the server that I need to access. Please help.
Diane Poremsky says
If the account was added as an Exchange account, you outlook supports 2 exchange accounts (or more) - but it's not really a problem with outlook but a problem with the server & connection to outlook.
I have others with the same complaint (but haven't repro'd it myself) - that is the x500 address used internally by exchange. I'm not sure why it's showing in Outlook - it normally won't show unless you move exchange mail off the exchange server and it can't resolve the x500 to your smtp.
As long as the messages send and replies work, it's just a display issue. Test it by sending to a gmail or other outside account that has web access and verify the outlook.com address is on the message and replies work.
Gary says
Thanks Diane, I think you are right. Messages are received with the proper FROM information, but they display in the sent folder with the O=FIRST ORGANIZATION-OU=EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE as sender and inside the message. Hopefully Microsoft will address this. I consider it a bug.
Diane Poremsky says
Can you send me a screenshot of how it looks in the sent folder? My contact at Microsoft wanted to see it and we can't repro it. use diane at slipstick
Dianne says
Diane, I thought I'd interject in this conversation that I've had the same issue with my sender showing up with the legacy DN rather than the displayname in sent items. At one time I was told it was because my Outlook is in on-line mode rather than cached. Although it is annoying, I've just learned to live with it because I need to be in on-line mode to support Exchange, Outlook and Active Directory at my company. It has been a little while since I've seen it but I'll do some research to see how far back it goes in my Outlook and report back. It could have been corrected with an Exchange CU. Perhaps I can correlate it with one of our upgrades. I'll post back with my findings.
Diane Poremsky says
Typically, you'll see the X500 address when the GAL is not available and you moved the message to a pst or there were changes on the server that affected the x500. You shouldn't see it in the mailbox in either olnine or cached mode (outlook.com does not support olnine mode).
Dianne says
I recently updated my Outlook 2013 to the new account profile but since that time (coincidental?) the spam my outlook.com account receives has tripled! I have been told it's not the server but I got flooded with spam right after I updated my account. Have you heard anything similar from anyone else?
I set my junk mail filter to low to attempt to put the most obvious junk in the folder but it's still not great. I'm thinking they are using a different algorithm or spam filtering service that isn't very well written. I can't even block about half of them because they come in with malformed from email addresses. If it's not even a valid email address, it is spam. Why doesn't the new spam filter catch more?
I don't mind deleting the spam I subscribed to but it's getting ridiculous. Any assistance will be appreciated!
Diane Poremsky says
It goes through the Office 365 spam filter - it should be catching a good bit but i have heard others complain that it's not working on their mailbox. I'm wondering if the malformed address is causing a problem and the filter skips it - or if its coming from an office 365 tenant and is whitelisted because it's 'internal' to the service.
Ken says
Not understanding what this means... I've never heard of an EAS account before. Is this implying that Outlook itself is being retired as a program, and everyone will need to use Outlook.com in the future?
I also find it interesting that Outlook.com runs terribly slow for me in Edge, but it's lightning fast in Chrome. I think the problem is the advertisements that are displayed on the right-hand side. Edge always seems to hang, until that advertisement is loaded, whereas Chrome ignores the loading of that advertisement and loads the page without waiting for it.
Diane Poremsky says
No, current versions of Outlook are not being retired. You can only use Microsoft Exchange account type to sync calendar and contacts in Outlook. Only Outlook 2013 and 2016 support EAS - those are the users that will be affected.
To see what type of account you are using, open Account Settings (on File menu) and look to the right of your outlook.com account. If it's says Microsoft Exchange, it's correct and you don't need to do anything.
When the accounts were on the old outlook.com server, outlook 2013 & 2016 used Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) to sync calendar and contacts. Exchange server doesn't normally allow Outlook desktop to use EAS (because it is a 'bad experience' and uses a lot of server resources) but when the accounts moved to the Office 365 Exchange server, it was enabled for Outlook.com, to provide continuity for users - everything continued to sync after the account was migrated. They've decided that the negatives associated with EAS accounts (bugs, server issues, bad experiences) outweigh continuity.

Hi Diane. I know that my outlook.com account has been updated and I can connect it with no problem on Outlook 2013 on my window 10 machine.. I could also connect it to a Windows Server 2012 R2 with Outlook 2013. But since I have upgraded to Windows Server 2016 that is no longer the case.. Makes no sense.. Same Outlook 2013 and same outlook.com account. The only difference is on windows Server 2016... In both Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2012 R2, I have my main e-mail account as an exchange 2010 account and when I attempt to add the upgraded outlook.com account it freezes and when I open outlook again, it shows as a private folder and for all practical purposes it is useless. All the searching has found nothing and Microsoft won't help.. Any ideas, leads to get this resolved? Thanks!
Alberto says
I can confirm that it has nothing to do with my other exchange account.. I just created a new user on Windows Server 2016 with Outlook 2013 with all the latest updates of Outlook 2013 and indeed the same issue.. I had done a repair on Outlook 2013 a month ago to test if it was a corruption with Outlook 2013, but it was not. I can still add the outlook.com account as non exchange e-mail address, but I a missing out on all the great exchange features... I can't e the only one with this issue.. But not sure how many companies are on Windows Server 2016. Then again.. Why would an operating system have an effect on a Microsoft Office Product? Again, outlook 2013 works just fine with my existing exchange 2010 accounts, Gmail, and outlook.com in the non exchange configuration.
Diane Poremsky says
I wouldn't think that it has anything to do with the other exchange account... what version of Exchange are you connecting to and are you using MAPI over HTTPS or RPC over HTTPS? You could try using RPC over HTTPS to connect to Outlook.com, but if it works, it will only work until Oct 2017 - they are discontinuing that protocol. If the problem is with MAPI over HTTPS, check your firewall - it uses port 80 so it should work, but the firewall may block it by service rather than by port.
This is the key you need to set to force RPC - but it will force it for both exchange accounts. I would only use this to see if it allows to set up the account and connect - then work on figuring out what is preventing you from connecting using mapi over https.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange
DWORD: MapiHttpDisabled
Value: 1
Alberto says
Thanks Diane! i actually have the firewall on windows server 2016 disabled for private and domain (and on for public) as I did with Windows Server 2012 R2. I am connecting to an Exchange 2010 which I also have on another server in the same server room.
So it is all apples to apples other than Windows Server 2016 vs Windows Server 2012 R2. I do have a firewall, but it is a Cisco firewall and it is not stopping the configuration of Outlook.com on my windows 10 machine and nothing has changed on that configuration. Only on the windows server 2016 to which we remote into that outlook.com won't work. ( albeit locally).
I tried the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftExchange DWORD: MapiHttpDisabled and it did the same thing.. Takes for ever to logon into microsoft, then I close re-open and it shows private folders. The config of the outlook.com looks like this:
server: https://outlook.office365.com/mapi/emsmdb/?MailboxId=0006bffd-f13a-07c0-0000-000000000000@outlook.com
username: =SMTP:myname@outlook.com
what else could I try?
Diane Poremsky says
this: =SMTP: is at least part of the problem. Get into the check names dialog and delete that from the user name - you may need to remove it and retry check names a few times...
Are you using auto account setup or manual setup?
did you still have the other server where it works? Export the profile from the registry and try importing it. (profiles are often goofy when you do this so it might not work.) At the very least, you can get the url from your account and try it as the server name in manual setup.

Thanks Diane.. I am doing the auto account setup, as i understand that otherwise it won't work.
As to manually putting in the server URL.. I just checked/compared the URL I listed above and the working URL for Outlook.com on my Windows 10 machine. And they are Exactly the same! So the URL configuration is doing it correctly... What else could I try?
Thanks!!!
PS.. Not sure what the check names dialog is.. When I begin the process..click on 'new' and then I get a dialog that says 'auto account setup' and then if all correct it adds the account...

Sorry I missed your messages earlier (was on vacation) - is it working yet? If the autodiscover records are correct and all updates installed, it should work.

It sure is, Thank you Diane!! it was the import from windows 10 that did the trick! With this new (imported) profile, I added back my exchange server e-mail and all is good, except that it asks me each time for the BCM database.. Very strange.. So each time I close and re-open outlook, it asks me to 'setup' BCM.. How can I make it stick? Hope your vacation was awesome and refreshing :-)

It's picking up BCM from the old profile? I would remove it from the profile and add it back - disable BCM (remove it from the profile), close and restart outlook, maybe reboot, then enable BCM.

Good question! i would assume so... I did not see a way of 'disabling' it from the profile. I did see checking off the boxes from the 'addins' but when I did that, close outlook, reopened it, added the addins again and then configured, and then closed and re-opened, it asked for it be configured again... Where in the profile would I change it, as the mailboxes and the locations are for the the outlook and exchange, but not BCM.. Thanks!

Hi Diane! All good now.. Uff.. I went ahead and did a repair to BCM and now it installs without a hitch.. Thanks again for your help! BTW.. As far as you now.. Is there any 'viable' 'free solutions like BCM used to be for outlook 2016+ Best
Diane Poremsky says
No free solutions from microsoft - there are 3rd parties that offer free CRM options but they are mostly cloud based, not installed locally.

Hi Diane! I created a 'test' admin user and tried to modify the existing profile., but attemptint to remove the stmpt: was not having much luck with that, when suddently the field opened up.. When it it did the server dissapeared.. So I readded it, but in doing so, I got this message
The connection to microsoft exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action
so that did not work...
If I try a 'manual' method.. I get this error..Log onto Exchange ActiveSync mail server (EAS): Could not locate the specified server. Please verify the server name is correct.
and I see that it chopped off my server to server:eas.outlook.com
So that did not work either..
What DID work was the export of the profile. Go figure! But I am afraid of doing it on my life server computer, as I would need to re-add the my exchange server and my configs..
is there a way to seamless do this process and/or I will need to configure all the other items from scratch? ( as i can't put my exchange server on my 'local' computer.
Thanks again!
Alberto

EAS is no longer supported in Outlook desktop. Exporting the registry is fine, as long as the account wasn't set up as EAS on that computer - it needs to be in as Exchange if you want to sync calendar and contacts or as IMAP to sync mail.

Hi Diane,
Since I imported the outlook.com configuration from my windows 10 machine to the windows server 2016, somehow BCM keeps asking me as if for the initial setup each time I open Outlook. Is there a way of preventing this? I assume that there are no longer any more 'free' BCM solutions out there that performed as well as BCM integrated into outlook right? Thanks
Diane Poremsky says
What version of Outlook do you use? Are you using Run as administrator? (You shouldn't.)
No, there are no BCM solutions from Microsoft and of the 3rd party CRMs I've looked at, they don't integrate well with outlook and are cloud-based.

Is the firewall configured the same on both servers?

As far as I'm concerned, Edge is not ready for prime time. I try to use it but always go back to either IE or Chrome.

I would rather use Internet Explorer than Edge, or Chrome, but I have so many problems getting my favorites to sync across computers, which defeats the purpose of having them on the cloud. I suppose that's a topic for another article though...
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, it's more or less out of my realm of expertise. While you can put them in OneDrive, I've had issues where they multiplied - at one point, i have over 200,000 shortcuts in each folder (which were also duplicated hundreds of times). I sign into Windows 10 using an outlook.com address and told it to sync settings - so far, that seems to work good.
