Update: as of March 2017 everyone is moved to the new server.
Everyone is moved to the new Outlook.com server. If you have the account configured as Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) you need to use autoaccount setup to add the account back; EAS is no longer supported in Outlook and all Outlook.com accounts will need to be added as Microsoft Exchange (you can use IMAP if you only need email support.)
Outlook 2013 & Outlook 2016
Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016 users shouldn't have any disruption when their account is moved as Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) will continue to sync, however we highly recommend removing the EAS account from Outlook and using auto account setup to add it back. This will create it as an Exchange server account and all features will work, such as adding attachments to appointments, importing mail, and contact groups.
Click on the File tab, then Account Settings button and select Account Settings to open the Account dialog.

Select the Exchange ActiveSync account and click Remove. Then click New to open the Add New Account dialog, where you'll type in your email address and password. Tip: you only need to enter your email address in this dialog, then click Next. Outlook will ask for your password if it's not already saved in the Credential Manager.
Outlook 2010 & Older
If you are using Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007, or Outlook 2003, once the account is moved, the Outlook Connector will stop working, with these send and receive errors:
Task 'poremsky@outlook.com' reported error (0x8004102A) : 'Error with Send/Receive. There was an error synchronizing your folder hierarchy. Error : 80041004.'
Task 'poremsky@outlook.com' reported error (0x8DE00005) : 'There is an error synchronizing your mail account. Please verify your account is configured correctly by first accessing your mail on the web. Error: 3219. Server. An error occurred in looking up the user's information in mserv. '
Mail flow will be restored after deleting the Connector account and using auto account setup to re-add the account to the profile. Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2007 will connect using Exchange while Outlook 2003 will use IMAP.
Because Outlook 2007 doesn't support multiple Exchange accounts in a profile, any users with Outlook.com and an existing Exchange account in the current profile will need to use two profiles going forward (or upgrade to a newer version of Office.)
Unfortunately, Outlook 2003 users will lose calendar and contact sync. These users will need to upgrade to a newer version of Office or use another mail client that supports calendar and contact sync if they want to sync calendar and contacts. Alternatives include the Windows 8 or 10 Mail app or eM client.
Remove Outlook Connector Accounts
After their Outlook.com account is migrated to the new server, users will need to remove the Connector account from their profile. Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2007 users will need to use auto account setup to add it back as an Exchange account while Outlook 2003 users will need to add the account back as IMAP (recommended, but POP3 is an option). Calendar and Contacts will not sync in Outlook 2003.
Outlook 2007 users who also have an Exchange account in their profile will need to use a separate profile for Outlook.com as you cannot have two Exchange accounts in an Outlook 2007 profile. Outlook 2010 and above support multiple Exchange accounts in a profile.
To remove and re-add the account in Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2007:
In Outlook 2010, you can remove the Outlook Connector account from File, Account settings , however, in Outlook 2007, you can't add the new account while Outlook is open and need to close Outlook and open the Control Panel, find Mail then remove the account and add it back. You can use this same method for Outlook 2010 as well.
After opening Mail, click Email Accounts.

Select the Connector account (the account type is MAPI) and click Remove.
If you don't have another email account or a pst in your profile, you'll need to add a pst file or add the Exchange account before removing the old account.
After removing the connector account, click New to open the auto account setup dialog. If using Outlook 2007, you'll need to select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP on the next screen.
Type your name, email address and password in the fields. After Outlook sets the account up, restart Outlook.
If your Outlook.com account uses a domain name not owned by Microsoft, such as gmail.com, yahoo.com, comcast.net, etc, youll need to add an Outlook.com alias to the account to set it up as Exchange. Instructions are at Add an Alias to an Outlook.com Account
If you use Outlook 2007 and have two Exchange accounts (either Outlook.com or your corporate account), you'll need to use IMAP or POP for one account or use two separate profiles. POP support is not enabled by default, you'll need to change this in Outlook.com. (Instructions are at the end of this article.)
To remove and re-add the account in Outlook 2003:
- Outlook 2003 users will go to Tools, Email Accounts
View or Change Existing Accounts then click Next.

- Select the account and click Remove.

- Click Add, then select IMAP and click Next.
- Type imap-mail.outlook.com for the incoming server name
- Type smtp-mail.outlook.com for the outgoing server.

- Click More Settings.
- In the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box, select the Outgoing Server tab and use the following settings:
- Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server. - Select the Advanced tab.
- In the Incoming Server (IMAP) section select This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). This will update the incoming port number automatically, to the correct one.
- In the Outgoing server (SMTP) section, select This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). Update March 23 2017: use port 25.

- Click Finish and return to Outlook.
Enable POP3 Support
POP3 support is disabled by default in the new Outlook.com accounts. You can enable it in Outlook.com's Options.
- Log into Outlook.com using a web browser.
- Click the Gear icon then choose Options.
- Find POP and IMAP along the left side
- Click Yes under Let devices use POP.

Uninstall the Outlook Connector
After removing the Outlook Connector account from your profile, you can uninstall the connector in Control panel, Programs and Features .

Add the Account to a Smartphone or Tablet
When you add the account to a smartphone or tablet, choose Exchange as the account type. If asked for a server name, use outlook.office365.com.
This video shows how to do it on an Apple device, but the basic steps are similar for Android devices.

Thank you Diane for your knowledge and your talent in succinctly instructing us 'how to'! I have a third party email account with my web hosting provider (XO Communications). I created the Outlook.com alias so that I can sync my Outlook Calendar as per each line item of your instructions (again, thank you). Calendar syncing is now working fine EXCEPT whenever I interact (reply or forward) with an email from my 'defaulted' 3rd party account "IMAP/SMTP (send from this account by default" MS Outlook always sends it from my Outlook alias "Microsoft Exchange" account. This is creating havoc. I am using "MS Outlook 2016 MSO (16.0.7766.7080) 16-bit" on an MS Surface 3 Pro. Thanks in advance.
Diane Poremsky says
this is a bug that is supposedly fixed in the latest insider build (8017.1000) but I did a quickie test and it's still broken here.

Fantastic blog and information. Really useful and got me out of a spot when I thought continued synchronization with Outlook 2003 was impossible. Very many thanks!

In contrast to your "Update" message: not ALL accounts are migrated yet. I still have "Outlook.com" in the inbox banner @ blu180.mail.live.com/. The email is not used as a Winphone login, and the calendar is not shared. There are no aliases. Only one device, a Win10 PC, is registered on the account's options/account details/devices page. Also, the "Nine" email app for my Android phone also accesses that account, but that is not a device login as MS defines it, so it does not appear in devices. The PC uses a personal O365 Outlook to retrieve email. This email address is forwarded from a corporate Exchange (non-Office 365) account. Could the forwarding be the reason? Or is it the EAS connection via the Android app?
When the MS link was active, I did request expedited migration of the account, but the canned autoreply stated that certain "unsupported" (undefined) issues with the account meant a late migration. I have not called MS support yet, and really don't want to waste my time fighting with them unless absolutely necessary. Any other suggestions?
Note: My other outlook.com addresses (not fwded from any corporate accounts) were migrated last year.
Diane Poremsky says
Yeah, i updated it a little early, in anticipation - there are a few remaining (under 15000) and they expect to be finished within 2 weeks.
Forwarding could be the cause, smtp only accounts were an issue. EAS shouldn't affect it -- its turned off for desktop outlook but not for devices.
Martin Edwards says
Receiving emails to my new IMAP Outlook.com account in 2003 is not a problem. I am unable to SEND them. I'm using Ports 993 for Incoming and 25 (auto) for SMTP.
Diane Poremsky says
Did you get the reply i sent using Outlook 2003? (I received it on the address I CC'd). It is using the settings in the screenshot.
Martin Edwards says
I still can't fix this. I'm getting contradictory explanations about setting up an Outlook IMAP email account in Outlook 2003. You say it can be done, and SSL is ok, but here: :https://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/outlookcommigrationinfo.htm it says" If you are still using Outlook 2003 then this change is actually bad news since Outlook 2003 is no longer supported (mainstream support for Outlook 2003 ended on April 14, 2009 and extended support on April 8, 2014) and isn't compatible with Office 365 Exchange Online.
As a workaround, you could previously configure your Outlook.com mail account as an IMAP or POP3 account in Outlook 2003 but since Outlook 2003 no longer supports any current-day security recommendations (Outlook 2003 doesn’t support TLS), it is no longer possible to configure your Outlook.com mail account in Outlook 2003.I HAVE set up an IMAP account in Outlook following your instructions, it receives email, but I cannot send. Does someone have a definitive answer for me please?
Diane Poremsky says
"Not supported" DOES NOT equal "does not work". Yes, Outlook 2003 is LONG out of support - but that doesn't automatically kill the application, it just means MS will no longer release updates for it and don't try calling them if you need help - they will not help you. (Most people using the old programs don't go to MS for support anyway).
I just tested it - set 465 as the port and autodiscover "fixed" it - it's now on port 25. The message was sent and arrived in my business account. Screenshot of my settings - make sure you go into More Settings and set the outgoing server to use the incoming auth and the advanced tab to use ssl.
Martin Edwards says
This is causing me chaos. I have MS Outlook 2003. I've been using Outlook.com as a MAPI account via Outlook Connector for years. No problem. Today I stopped receiving emails and was also unable to send emails After being told by Outlook.com that SSL is no longer supported and basically to go elsewhere, I came across this website which seemed to say that SSL CAN be supported, so I followed your directions. I removed the MAPI account and set up an IMAP account with the same email address of course, using the incoming ports of 995 and outgoing SMTP of 25, (I've also tried 587 to no avail). I can no longer send emails. I AM getting incoming emails, eventually, but every 20 seconds or so I get the msg "The Imap Server has issued an unrecognised greeting" Whatever that means. When they do arrive, I'm unable to delete them, a line just appears across them. What's going on? Why can't I send emails any more? This is so frustrating. Is SSL supported or not? Do I have to leave Outlook.com? I've used a different email address for your reply. I don't trust Outlook.com I really hope you can help me sort this mess out. Thank you.
Diane Poremsky says
They enabled a hack to make Outlook 2003 work since it doesn't support SSL properly - but that hack can go away at any time. I've used both 465 and 587 in the past and it worked - but i haven't tested it since December. Will dig out my virtual machine and test it again.
It is really better to use a different email client - if upgrading Office is not an option, try eM client. It's free for up to 2 accounts (if you have more accounts, they usually offer it $30 after the trial expires).
Gareth Winchester says
Hi Diane
I'm trying to sync my work's email account & calendar using the new set-up (we were using Exc Active Sync).
I've removed the old EAS account but when I try to re-install as a Microsoft Exc Server account, it says it can't do it through Outlook (we use Outlook 2013 & Windows 10) & I have to do it through the Mail app.
I then installed it using the Mail app, and I'm able to access & sync emails & calendar using the Mail app (and Outlook website too).
I still can't work out how to get the sync to work in Outlook 2013. Can you suggest anything?
Diane Poremsky says
Not sure why you are getting that message - it should work perfectly using Outlook - File, Add (or Account Settings, New) - type in your email address then hit Next. If the password is not in the credential manager, you'll be asked for it.
If the address on the account is not an Outlook.com address or in the custom domain program offered by outlook.com, you will need to use an outlook.com alias to sign in.
Gareth Winchester says
I can add the email (in IMAP/SMTP format) using the method you suggested, but the calendar won't appear, and Outlook won't let me install anything as a Exc Server account.
If it helps, I get a message that says "A new Microsoft Exchange account cannot be manually configured while Outlook is running. To add a manually configured account, exit Outlook. In Control Panel, open Mail and then click E-mail Accounts".
This doesn't help as I need to be able to do it using Outlook as some PCs pre-date Win 10...
Diane Poremsky says
IMAP (and POP3) DO NOT support calendar sync with Outlook.com - you need to use Exchange if you want to sync those.
>> I need to be able to do it using Outlook as some PCs pre-date Win 10...
Ummm. Why? The Control panel works in those programs too... open it and search for Mail... or paste this into windows explorer:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items and look for Mail
Mike says
Hi Diane,
We use Exchange Server and Outlook 2010 at work and I had added a hotmail account installed via Outlook Hotmail Connector and everything was fine until a few weeks ago when it stopped synchronising with the errors you have shown above.
I have tried many times removing the account and reinstalling everything but to no avail.
I followed your instructions above and every time I try to add my hotmail account, Outllok says I mlust install the hotmail connector again ?
I uninstalled everything and waited a week or so for the DNS to update and tried again but Outllok 2010 still insists I should install the Outlook Hotmail Connector.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated as I need both my work and hotmail calendars in the same place. I have already had a few embarrasing agenda problems due to this issue.
Thanks
Diane Poremsky says
The Hotmail connector definitely will not work anymore. Do you have all updates installed? Outlook 2010 should be at 14.0.7173.5000 or higher for it to connect to Office 365 Exchange accounts (which is what Outlook.com is running on now.)
Sharon says
HI Diane,
I deleted my Hotmail.com email from Outlook 2010. I also deleted the Hotmail Connector. I then added my hotmail account as you described. When I clicked finish and restarted my outlook I continuously get prompted my credentials and the new account is never created. If I cancel it says "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." Any suggestions?
Diane Poremsky says
Do you have all Office 2010 updates installed? Are you using multi-factor authentication? If so, you need to use the app password.
Try this: from control panel, mail, add the account using manual setup - outlook.office365.com is the server name. If it errors, close the dialogs (using OK, not X) then reopen the profile and click Repair. You'll be asked for the email address and password and get the 'can't find' dialog a few (million :)) times, but if you persist, it will eventually work. I recorded the steps in this quickie video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Coe9Nq2jp1k
Rob Allerton says
Hi Diane
I have a problem. MY email address Robert@domain.Info is a live account. After recent changes I can still access through Outlook.com but cannot connect through Outlook 2016. the account is not recognised as a live account and will not connect automatically. Can you please advise.
Thanks Rob
Diane Poremsky says
You will need to add an outlook.com alias to the account then use it to sign in.
Carlo says
Hello Diane,
Does this mean we are all forced to have on outlook.com alias? The reason I stuck with Outlook.com was that it supported a name@mydomain.com account which proved to be a viable replacement to the old Pocket PC ActiveSync which allowed my email to be synchronized between several devices.
Would you say that right now, what was once a working service is basically broken?
Carlo
Diane Poremsky says
You need an outlook alias if you want to set the account up in outlook desktop as an exchange account.
Carlo says
Hi Diane,
I understand. I've already done that and I'm not too happy with the result. My email which was name@mydomain.com used to work with Outlook 2016 just fine until the migration. For added info... My EAS setup in my Android phone is not affected by the migration. I'm getting all my emails with no problems. It's my Outlook 2016 that won't connect unless I use an alias (name@outlook.com)
Android - no alias- all good.
Outlook 2016 - alias needed or nothing gets synchronized.
I was just wondering if Microsoft will be addressing this issue in the future or did Microsoft intentionally break it?
Carlo
Diane Poremsky says
They didn't intentionally break it, but because you need to use auto account setup to add the account (it uses MAPI over HTTPS and the server name is a custom url, not a server name), you can't use the non-outlook.com domain as it will set it up to the isp server. They are looking into ways of making it work but i don't know if or when we'll see it.
Mike Hall says
Hi Diane,
My account header doesn't say "Outlook Mail", (like your screen grab), but actually says "Outlook Email". Does this mean that I have migrated or not?
[browser address bar reads "https://outlook.live.com/owa/].
I'm asking because I'm trying to decode how best to set up access to my calendar and contacts on an Android device. You mention elsewhere that EAS is to be depricated after the migration to exchange, but surely the 'E' in EAS stands for Exchange? I for one have a lot of confusion regarding the relationship between Outlook.com, Exchange, and Office365.
Diane Poremsky says
You were migrated - apparently only UK users see Email - i believe it picks it based on windows and browser languages.
>> You mention elsewhere that EAS is to be deprecated after the migration to exchange, but surely the 'E' in EAS stands for Exchange?
It does stand for Exchange and EAS is being disabled completely for Outlook 2013/2016 DESKTOP (on windows). It will continue to work on devices. If the app supports EWS (exchange web services), it will use that, otherwise mobile devices will use EAS. Either way, eas.outlook.com is the mobile server you'll enter if asked.
Mike Hall says
That's great to know, and I don't think it had been at all clear to me. I have been busy looking for alternative ways of setting up on iPhone & Android and other desktop clients too due to EAS going to be deprecated. If it is in fact only the Outlook desktop client that is going to be losing EAS then I can sit tight and continue to log on to my exchange account using a one-time password. You really are a goldmine of information Diane - thanks.
Marsidotes says
This page solved a problem which has cost me hours of searching. Thanks, thanks, thanks.
I unwisely standardised both personal and business emails on Outlook.com about 10 years ago, migrating from Hotmail. I wish I had used Gmail! If and when Google releases a desktop operating system and business software I'll be gone.
I use Outlook 2010 and have a paid up Windows 365 account. I use Outlook 2010 so that I control the data files. Nobody told me that Outlook 2010, previously connected to Outlook.com via Outlook Connector and IMAP, would start throwing cryptic errors. (Folder Heirarchy, Mserv) Microsoft management must be the worst tech managers in the entire world. Would it be a good idea to give information on how to resolve errors in the error message? Perhaps this will also resolve the problem with Contacts. I have found the only way to get Outlook.com contacts to sync to my Windows 650XL mobile was to use Google Contacts. I am not a tech - just a humble civil engineer. No wonder my friends are evangelical about Apple when they migrate. Windows management seems to think that poor quality, badly configured, poorly migrated, partly finished software with faults to be found by users, with constant risk of breakdown, often needing reinstallation, is what they are paid to produce. While I am ranting, I can mention that Windows 10 irretrievably crashed my Windows phone in one of its updates. I have gone back to 8.1, but my next phone will be Android, despite the bloatware.
Diane Poremsky says
How is the outlook.com account added to the phone? It *should* sync just fine.
to use Outlook.com in Outlook 2010 as an Exchange account, you need all updates installed. Then use auto account setup to add the account. This will sync calendar & contacts to outlook.
Todd Redmon says
Hi Diane and Everyone -
I am wondering if anyone knows if Microsoft might have a back-up of prior msn.com webmail accounts -- prior to the migration? And, if so, how might I access my info?
Here is the background of the problem and my hypotheses of what has happened -- thoughts from the group MUCH appreciated (sorry for the long post):
I used xxx.msn.com as my web-mail (paid account) and Outlook 365 to access it. Shortly after the migration, I noticed my personal folders (e.g., family, finance, house info, etc.) in Outlook 365 weren't syncing properly; tax information was in my 'family' folder, family emails/pictures were in my 'house information' folder, etc.
As a potential fix, one of the posts I read on another site suggested removing the account from Outlook 365 and setting it up again with the idea that it would then sync properly with Outlook.com -- where my msn.com account had apparently now migrated to.
After I did this, the folders did not reappear/sync in 365 and, when went to the new Outlook.com web-mail, none of the folders were there either. My concern is this delete whatever folders/emails had, in fact, been migrated to Outlook.com (even if they were in the wrong folders)...and now all of it is permanently gone.
The Microsoft help desk thought that maybe the migration was still in process and things would show up later. That doesn't sound right to me.
Regardless of the cause, I am hoping to be able to get a copy of what was in the folders -- even if from many months ago. There were years worth of emails and pics from family and friends, as well as other things.
Any experience and suggestions welcome.
Thanks again.
Diane Poremsky says
As far as I know, there is no backup of the accounts available. What type of account was configured in outlook before the migration? Which version of outlook do you use?
Todd Redmon says
Hi Diane...and group.
You and everyone here seem to be the most knowledgeable and experienced on these topics based on all my surfing, so I thought I post my situation and see if anyone might be able to help. I am having a challenge that seems to be similar to many and can't figure out what to do or the options at this point. All help and advice welcome (thanks in advance for your time):
PROBLEM:
All of my msn.com personal email folders have disappeared on both my machine and Outlook.com.
BACKGROUND:
I have been a longtime msn.com mail user and historically accessed it via Outlook (upgrading along the way: '07, '10, '13) on my PC vs. the web. Last summer, I upgraded to Outlook 2016 via an Office 365 subscription.
After this, my folders *seemed* to have transferred and synced correctly from msn.com's server to Outlook 2016, so I thought things were fine. As I started to access them on a more frequent basis, I noticed most of the content had synced incorrectly (family emails/photos were in my 'Finance' folder; bank notifications in my 'Health' folder, etc.) and a lot of information was missing completely. It was a mess.
It was at this point I found about the cloud migration to Outlook.com and the possibility this might be the root cause of these issues. I subsequently followed advice that suggested I remove my msn.com account in Outlook 2016 on my PC, as well as 'Outlook Connector', and then add it back to get everything to sync with Outlook.com -- no luck. AND then the folders disappeared on Outlook.com as well.
At this risk of stating the obvious, it seems like this last action might have erased whatever content was, indeed, left on MSN's server post cloud migration (albeit incomplete and organized incorrectly, from what I had originally).
Regardless, any thoughts on my options now? There was a lot of important info in these folders (most of it nostalgic: family emails, photos, etc.), so I am hoping there is a *possibility" this content still exists and there is a way I can get access to it. Perhaps in Bill Gates's closet at home? An abandoned server on the outskirts of Mumbai? A magical cloud far far away?
Thanks in advance. All thoughts valued.
Todd Redmon
Diane Poremsky says
How was the account configured in Outlook 2016? (The connector didn't work with 2013/2016 - you either used EAS or pop3/imap). If you used pop3, then the content is in a pst on your local computer and can be recovered.
If the content is not in the recover deleted items folder, it won't be recoverable. Log into outlook.com, open the deleted items folder and click the link to recover deleted items.
Anil Narang says
On Nov 19, 2016, my hotmail email account stopped working, when accessed via MS Outlook 2003.
Like many other people who have commented, I ended up contacting MS via their chat support and wasted quite a bit of time on 3 separate occasions - including one tech support who convinced me to access my PC remotely and then promptly rebooted my PC - on purpose to disconnect!
It is likely that this question has already been answered..... Can I continue to use MS Outlook 2003 with my hotmail email address? If yes, there must be some issue unbeknownst to me - because I have followed the instructions provided above in the section "To remove and re-add the account in Outlook 2003". Regrettably, I am unable to access the account because a window pops up showing that the username and password are incorrect for the server "imap-mail.outlook.com"
Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks.
Diane Poremsky says
You can use outlook 2003 with outlook.com, however, you are limited to POp3 or IMAP, both of which are email only. If you want to sync calendar and contacts, you'll need to upgrade to a newer version or use eM client, or use the web interface.
Anil Narang says
Thanks - Since Nov 19, 2016, even though I tried numerous times to remove the account and add it back to Outlook - it would not work. It would continuously prompt for password - even though it was correct.
For inexplicable reasons, it started working yesterday. I had already removed the account from Outlook in Nov 2016 but I re-added it yesterday and it worked.
Any ideas why it was not working for almost 2 months - was it a server issue?
Diane Poremsky says
There were issues with authentication in mid-Nov but they were fixed by Dec 1. If you didn't try adding it at all in Dec, then your account was affected by that problem.
Anil Narang says
New problem.....The "Mail Forward" function works selectively - i.e. messages from certain domains (like Twitter) get successfully forwarded to another e-mail account, while those from other domains (like FedEx) do not!
Note: messages from FedEx stopped getting forwarded effective 9/22/2016 - up until then, these got forwarded without any issues.
Is there a reason for that? If yes, is there a work around? Thanks again.
Diane Poremsky says
Is that date when your account was migrated? Do you get bounces back saying why the message was rejected by the other account? The forwards should be from your own address, not a redirect - now that the migration is done, forwards shouldn't have spf/dmarc issues. However, if mail is detected as spam, it will be dropped - to avoid this, use connected accounts instead of forwarding. When the other account comes and gets the mail, you'll have fewer bounced messages - although most mail providers don't check for new mail more often than every 30 min.
Anil Narang says
9/22/2016 was the last day on which emails from FedEx were successfully forwarded. Thereafter abruptly, any mail from FedEx does not get forwarded at all.
The exact date on which the migration took place is unknown to me - however, it must have been sometime in mid January 2017 (Note: Between Nov 19, 2016 and mid January 2017 my Hotmail account was inaccessible via Outlook - during this period, it was accessible only by using a web browser)
No - I do not see any bounce-backs.
The messages from FedEx come in fine and are available on the other e-mail account but do not get forwarded - messages from several other senders like Twitter get forwarded without any issues.
Domains like FedEx are listed as a "Safe Sender" in
my Junk Mail Options - therefore, theoretically, these messages should not be treated as Junk Mail.
Summary: For reasons beyond my comprehensive powers, messages from certain specific domains are not getting forwarded
Diane Poremsky says
is the forward in the Sent folder on the other computer? do you know if the second account's server uses SPF filtering?
Anil Narang says
No - all incoming mail has been set up to forward. The email account from where the e-mail is getting forwarded is a Hotmail account - in other words, incoming e-mail from the personal Hotmail account is getting forwarded to work e-mail account (hosted by Yahoo). I do not know whether the server uses SPF filtering - is there a way to check it?
Diane Poremsky says
I learned today that there is a very good chance that microsoft is filtering it due to a huge number of FexEd spam. They drop it if it's not sent from the fedex server.
Anil Narang says
Aha! Thank you for solving the mystery!
Anil Narang says
Not sure whether this explanation makes sense....about why mail forwarding does not work any more.
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/tzink/2016/05/19/why-does-my-email-from-facebook-that-i-forward-from-my-outlook-com-account-get-rejected/
Diane Poremsky says
it should be fixed now.
Roger Alexander says
I am not excited at all about this entire process. I was not warned and now none of my rules work at all. they have not worked for over a month. No assistance from MS has yielded any resolution. Awesome.
Diane Poremsky says
Are the rules still in outlook or did you lose them in the migration? Did you remove the account from outlook and add it back using autoaccount setup? The rules should still work - some conditions and actions may not be available on the new server, but the rules that are supported should work.

Regarding those of us using an old custom domain with Hotmail/Outlook:Do you have any information about which setting should be changed for the hosted domain?
For example, I've noticed that you have to create a new autodiscovery CNAME-entry for the Exchange setup to work. But how about those SPF, MX and MSOID values? They still point to the old .hotmail.com addresses. Do you have to edit them as well?
Diane Poremsky says
Leave those alone, just change the autodiscover record.
David says
As of this morning, the problem seems to be fixed.
Marcel B says
Problem fixed by itself 2 days ago for me. Since I had deleted my hotmail account, 4 days ago, I just created it again following instructions in this document and it works.
David says
Hi Diane -- Like other users my Hotmail/Outlook account was migrated to the new server. Since yesterday my Outlook window showed "Disconnected" and did not download any new email messages. So I deleted the Hotmail account and tried to add it back today and cannot get past the "Searching for [email address] settings" stage. I have tried manual settings as well but no luck. I get "An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available." I also get an error when it tries an unencrypted connection. I'm using Office 2016 on a Win 10 desktop. Any suggestions?
Thank you!
Diane Poremsky says
Sorry, I was off for the US Thanksgiving holiday. Is it working yet? It can take up to 48 hours for the DNS to update after the move.
Mak says
Not sure if someone already mentioned one important thing (at least it was crucial in my case)
I got Send/Receice error due to outlook.com migration as well .
Even if I followed all the steps described above I was not able to synch data for my Hotmail account in Outlook 2010.
In the end I created additional alias for my Hotmail account for domain "@outlook.com" - once I used this alias (@outlook.com) for logging in everything worked fine and my problem was resolved.
Diane Poremsky says
Thanks!
Yuri says
Hi Diane,
Suddenly today I've started getting Send/Receive error messages. After researching online came across your post. I am using Windows 10 and Outlook 2010. It looks like my Hotmail account was moved to new server as when I login online it says Outlook Email across the top
Followed your steps:
> Deleted my Hotmail account from outlook
> Deleted .ost file from AppData folder
> Tried to re-add Hotmail account using Auto Account Setup and outlook creates MAPI account and I still get the same errors.
I do have my work Microsoft exchange account set up. Could this be affecting my Hotmail account?
I've tired uninstalling Outlook Connector after deleting account and .ost and then tried adding the Hotmail account, but outlook askes for Outlook Hotmail Connecter to be installed.
So I am a bit puzzled as it looks like my Hotmail account was migrated to new server but when trying to add to my Outlook 2010 it still asks for connector.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
Diane Poremsky says
it can take 24 - 48 hours for the DNS to fully update and caches clear. I'd give it some time then try again.
Yuri says
Thanks Diane,
Will wait until tomorrow and try it again.
So once DNS is fully updated it shouldn't ask to install Outlook Hotmail Connector and set up account as Exchange, right?
I can have more than one exchange accounts in outlook 2010? As I believe in Outlook 2007 you can have only one exchange account and then Hotmail accounts have to be set up as IMAP. I don't have to do the same with my outlook?
Thank you in advance.
Diane Poremsky says
Correct, once DNS is updated, it won't ask to use the hotmail connector. Outlook 2010 supports multiple exchange accounts, so yes, you can add more than one to the profile as exchange.
Yuri says
Hi Diane,
Waited until Saturday and managed to add my Hotmail to outlook as exchange. but then noticed that no new e-mails are coming through.
SO decided to give it more time, but it is still not working. When I click on Hotmail inbox it says trying to connect.
Had the same issue at work today. After deleting connector account and removing Outlook connector, tried to add Hotmail but it asks to install outlook connector???
I am totally confused now as my Hotmail account doesn't work on either PCs.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Yuri
Diane Poremsky says
You definitely can't use the connector once the account is moved.
Is it still not working?
Joon says
I'm having exactly the same issue as Yuri and I've been scratching my head for the last 2 or 3 days trying to find a solution. To summarize, I use Outlook 2010 to get my msn (hotmail) e-mails. I successfully migrated this to the Office 365 servers a few weeks ago and deleted the Outlook Connector (exactly as described above) and things were working fine until 3 days ago and all of a sudden when I opened Outlook 2010, my msn e-mail would not update (message at the bottom page says, "... trying to connect". So, I deleted the msn/hotmail e-mail account from Outlook 2010 and tried to reinstall. As part of adding the msn/hotmail e-mail account back, Outlook 2010 wanted me to download the Outlook Connector again, which was strange, but I did it. Then, when I added the msn/hotmail account back in Outlook 2010, it now connects, but it is showing a synchronization error (Error synchronizing folder [80041004-0-0-430]...). All the while, now my msn account says MAPI instead of Microsoft Server. Again, this all happen post migration to the new server and after it was all working fine for a while. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Diane Poremsky says
The connector will not work once the account is moved, period. Check for Office updates, maybe do a repairt, if you installed windows updates right before it happened.
Or it's possible there were some server-side issues that affected it. If so, I would expect it to be fixed soon.
Marcel B says
I do have the exact same problem since November 21st. All of a sudden, I am no more able to send or receive hotmail messages using my OUTLOOK 2007 application. It was working well using Exchange configuration since April 2016. But yesterday, it failed with "... trying to connect" without success. I have deleted my hotmail account in outlook and tried to recreate it through configuration panel without success. Very annoying given I am able to read new email when I login by internet or with my iphone.
I checked for Microsoft Office updates but Windows says I am up to date. Last update applied on my system was Windows 10 Version 1607 (KB3200970) on November 9th, and Outlook worked fine after it until November 21st.
I hope it to be fixed soon by Microsoft.
Diane Poremsky says
Was your account moved to the new server on the 21st? There were some issues with the service that weekend, so its possible it was related to that - but if the account was just moved, it needs removed from outlook and added back using auto account setup. It can take up to 48 hours for the DNS to update tho.
Alessandro says
I'm having exactly the same issue since this morning. Actually the update to the hotmail account caused huge issues to outlook 2010 and before realizing it was caused by hotmail ( only fix was to delete the account ), did a repair.
Anyway if I add again the account with connector still installed, I keep getting a MAPI that obviously fails to sync .. if I remove the connector I keep getting asked to reinstall it ( the situation didn't change in the past 12h ).
Some reboots were added in the mix, with no differences.
Any hint would be appreciated... ( tried even imap, but it doesn't login with the settings mentioned online )
Diane Poremsky says
Sorry, I was off for the US holiday. If the account was moved to the new server, the connector will not work. The account needs added as an Exchange account or IMAP but it can take up to 48 hours for the DNS to clear.
Is it still not working?
David says
Hii Diane.
As I mentioned in a post below, once my Outlook.com web interface updated (so that the Skype icon is a text bubble), my problem with the company name disappearing seemed to be resolved. However, I still have the problem of (a few specific) contacts that I deleted reappearing days later. Each time they reappear, I delete them, but sure enough days later they are back. I have multiple aliases in my Outlook.com account and also have a Windows Phone (running Cyan). One time when I went to delete the reappeared contacts via the Windows Phone, I saw that at least on the phone the contacts were associated with many Outlook profiles, and I had to delete each one.
Why do these contacts keep reappearing? Googling the issue seems to indicate that this problem has existing with at least some Outlook.com accounts pre-migration (back in 2012). I am at the point that I feel that I need to delete my Microsoft account and start all over. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.
Thank you!
Diane Poremsky says
there are a few people with the contact problem - a client last week had the problem with just 8 contacts. One possibly is opening the email account on more than one computer (he used 3 computers) but the duplication doesn't happen fast enough for me to know for sure if that was the cause - he said it seems to happen days after you used one of the secondary computers.
BTW, the issue with the old server was often caused by editing the contact in outlook and the eas protocol. That shouldn't be the cause with the new server, especially if you use microsoft Exchange account type, not EAS.

Hi
Running Windows 10 Aniiversary update (64 Bit) and Office Pro Plus 2010 and Outlook version 14.0.7173.5000 (32Bit).
I followed instructions an
1. Created an Outlook alias
2. Re-added account via Auto Account Setup
3. Removed Outlook Hotmail Connector account (MAPI)
4. Uninstalled the Outlook Hotmail Connector
5. Now tried to open Outlook, I get message that Outlook stopped working and "Outlook host process RUNDLL32 has stopped working"
6. I then did a system restore and reinstalled Outlook Hotmail connector to get Outlook to work again
7. I tried this twice and got the same results.
Any suggestions:
1. Should try and upgrade to Office 2013 which I have or is it better to uninstall 2010 and do clean installation. Will PC Windows 10 reember all my settings?
2. Then if succesful, add my Outlook.com account via Auto Account setup with exchange so that my calenders and contacts also syn between devices - PC and Windows Phone running win 10 anniversary update
Thanks in advance.
Appreciate all the help
george
Diane Poremsky says
Was your account migrated to the new server? If the connector works (syncs), it wasn't.
Outlook 2013 gives a better experience but 2010 will work too. I'd try a new profile with just the outlook.com account and see if that works.
George says
Thanks for the reply. Yes account was migrated and connector stopped working. I'll try and upgrade to 2013 again and hopefully this time outlook 2013 will work so that I can link Outlook 2013 to Outlook.com via Exchange. (Maybe the upgrade from 2010 to 2013 previously didn't work as Outlook 2010 still had Hotmail connector installed and MAPI account).

Thank you so much!!! I would never have figured this out on my own!
I did still have trouble sending emails, but changed the port to 587 and now it is working! Thank you again!

I thought I had all of the contact list/distribution list issues resolved by the tedious process of recreating all of my lists. However, yesterday, my email with lists had more errors and wouldn't send. I discovered that there were many "contacts" in my lists that started with a Q and had a string of numbers after the Q. I never added these contacts nor put them in the lists. Very strange. The emails all sent once I deleted the Q contacts from the lists!
Diane Poremsky says
thanks. not sure what the q entries were - i've only seen one complaint like this but no one mentioned the cause.
Jim T. says
Now that my @outlook.com account has been updated to the new Exchange-like server infrastructure, it *appears* that we may be able to implement the long-awaited unified inbox. Or am I hallucinating?
Outlook.com lets you assign "connected accounts," usually outside IMAP or Gmail accounts. And when doing so, it gives you the option of merging those accounts' folders with your @outlook.com account's mail folders. I tried this with one or two IMAP accounts I created for purposes of testing, and it appears to work as expected. All three accounts' mail folders were merged, and appeared as a single account, both from the Outlook.com website and my Outlook 2016 PC client. Hallelujah!
Can this be a workable solution for a unified inbox? Or have I missed some important detail or gotcha?
Diane Poremsky says
it's half-workable. :) It creates a unified inbox, but unlike the unified inbox on a smartphone, where the accounts are separate but shown as one in the view, the accounts are merged into one. My own preference is to use it for accounts I'm not really using but need to monitor. If you use outlook on the web, replies should use the correct account. Outlook 2016 might use the correct account for replies but i haven't tested it to verify - older versions will only reply using the outlook.com account.
Jim T. says
Ah, thanks. That's a subtlety I had not yet discovered. I may use this feature to combine little-used accounts as you describe, but keep my "real" email accounts separate like always. Drat.
Herve says
Thanks you so much for this post. Reinitialising hotmail account from Outlook has solved my issue (since few days, outlook removed all messages and downloaded all messages.. Sisyphus myth..).

My outlook is changed to the new exchange several weeks ago,now all of a sudden i cannot open or save attachments in the outlook.com app. Tried everyhthing, cannot contact supplier cause emailadress is not working. Hopefully it can be solved soon
Diane Poremsky says
It worked ok before and the problem just started in the last day or two? If so, it's probably a server side issue that will fix itself.
If you didn't remove and readd the account when your account was updated, you can try doing that.
Jensid says
My principal email address was migrated today. It's on a custom domain. On my Windows 10 PC Outlook 2016 it configured as an Exchange a/c & on my MacBook macOS Sierra it configured as an EAS a/c. Whilst both systems initially produced error messages for invalid certificate messages during setup, everything's running fine. My iOS 10 iPhone 7 Plus didn't miss a beat. It's gone very well for me.
kim redfield says
Hi Diane. My account was migrated today. I use outlook 2016 and EAS to sync with my outlook.com. My desktop is still syncing without any issues and all of my data is in outlook.com, but all of a sudden starting today I can no longer view my outlook calendar, contacts, or emails on my samsung phone. I have only one email in my inbox with the subject "Microsoft account". It says ACTION REQUIRED: Finish setting up your email account... I have tried removing the EAS account and added it with the outlook.office365.com as the exchange server. The account gets added without any error message. But nothing syncs. I even deleted the device in setting in outlook.com and restarted the phone, and that does not work. I did install the outlook app and that seems to work, but I really want to use the google calendar app, my phones contacts and email apps. Could my issue be that my microsoft email account ends in verizon.net?
Diane Poremsky says
>> Could my issue be that my microsoft email account ends in verizon.net?
possibly, if it's a microsoft account using the address. If it's the result of Verizon using it as their customer mail server, then no. But... putting in the server name should work. It's more likely that it's just a glitch - I've seen a few people who had problems for the first day, then it started working as DNS was updated.
Does the mail app have an option for outlook.com accounts? You could try that - EAS server is eas.outlook.com.
kim redfield says
I set up an alias ending in outlook.com (and made it primary) instead of verizon.net and added it in the email app using the option for outlook.com accounts like you suggested, but I'm getting the same result. I'm hoping it's just a glitch and will sort itself out in a few days. I give up. Thanks for your help.
Diane Poremsky says
It is working yet? It can take a couple of days for DNS to completely update.
Maurice says
Still will not work. Exchange will work perfectly on my iPhone though.
Diane Poremsky says
If the alias domain is not in the microsoft system (live, hotmail, msn, outlook.com, etc), you need to add an outlook.com alias to the account then use it to set up outlook - there is no way to add a gmail alias as an Exchange account. The outside aliases can be added as an EAS account using manual setup.
kim redfield says
I tried creating an alias with an outlook.com address and added the account using the outlook.com option in my samsung email app. I used the eas.outlook.com server, but it still doesnt work. It's just strange that my desktop outlook 2016 is working and it works with outlook app. Is there a department at microsoft that could tell me if its just because of the new server and will resolve itself? Or should I maybe contact Samsung?
Diane Poremsky says
Try creating the account on the device as an Exchange account and if asked, use outlook.office365.com as the server name.
Maurice says
I cant setup an exchange email account in outlook 2016 using my alias, but can easily do so from my iPhone. how can i setup an exchange account in outlook 2016 - using my send from alias and not my outlook.com email address?
Diane Poremsky says
If the domain is not hosted on Outlook.com, you'd need to add it as an EAS account (using eas.outlook.com as the server name) if you wanted to set it up with the address. Unfortunately, mail sent from the address will be sent on behalf of the address, not directly from it.
David says
Hi Diane. My account was migrated last month. I use Outlook 2016 with my outlook.com account and it is in fact now set up as an Exchange connection. My Calendar functionality/syncing works perfectly. However, Contacts/People is a total disaster. My contacts get duplicated over and over. Company names get removed. (I think this is a bug in the syncing of the "File As" field). And there is plenty more that is wrong. Contacts/People work perfectly for me in my work Office 365 for Business account and I was hoping that when outlook.com migrated to the new servers it would work the same way. Any idea what is going on? Is everyone else having the same problems? Is Microsoft aware of these issues and how crippling they are? I chatted with outlook.com support and they were not really helpful. Thank you.
Diane Poremsky says
other people are having similar problems but as of yet, we don't know why. It seems to be a small subset of users. Microsoft is aware of the problems but haven't yet been able to repro or identify the cause. If you create a new contacts, are they affected too?
David says
Yes, new contacts are affected as well.
David says
I noticed that you had posted about part of my problem - the disappearing company name - in April:
https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/contact-bug-outlook-com/
So it looks like this problem has been around for at least 6 months and there is no solution in sight? Does this problem only occur in migrated (as opposed to newly created) accounts on the new servers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Diane Poremsky says
They are investigating it but I don't know the ETA for a fix.
David says
I believe I may have figured out what's going on. Skipping over how I got to this point and lots of detail (and lots of pain), it appears to me that:
a) Behind the scenes, Microsoft is in the process of fully integrating Skype such that going forward there will be no "linked" Microsoft / Skype accounts; Skype will just be a service that is part of your Microsoft account. As a matter of fact, you can no longer unlink linked Microsoft and Skype accounts:
https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12060/can-i-link-or-unlink-my-skype-and-microsoft-accounts
b) My Microsoft account and linked Skype account have not yet been fully migrated/integrated and the People issues I am having are a result of conflicts between the incomplete integration of People and Skype contacts. I believe this is the case because In my outlook.com account, the Skype icon - to the left of my notifications "bell" icon - is an "S". I noticed in a friend's account, however, that the icon is a "chat bubble" instead of an "S". This person has never had a standalone or linked Skype account and his account does not have any of the People issues I am having (such as company names disappearing, contacts being duplicated, etc.). Incidentally, another friend has the "S" logo on his account and he and has the same issues that I am having...
Looks like the only thing to do - other than waiting and hoping - is to start from scratch with a brand new Microsoft account...
Diane Poremsky says
a) correct.
b) i'm not sure about the problems as not everyone with the existing accounts is affected. I'll see what i can find out
David says
Thank you Diane. Coincidentally, after posting my previous message my account now shows a "chat bubble" icon instead of the "S" icon.
Company names now seem to be sticking in the few test entries I made but some contacts I previously deleted also reappeared. Each time I delete them, I also check "clean up contacts" (which finds no duplicate contacts) and through "restore deleted contacts" I purge the items I have deleted.
Anything you can find out would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again Diane!
Diane Poremsky says
They were working on fixing the company name problem - I'll need to test it and see if it was fixed, but i'm not sure it is related to the icon displayed - they could just be updating the interface and not everyone has the new icon yet.
David says
That would be quite a coincidence - as soon as the new icon appeared, the company name problem disappeared. Still don't know why contacts I deleted reappeared, but maybe now the system is finally "cleansed" and they won't show up again.
Please let me know what you find. Thanks so much!
katiek says
Ditto! Contacts, and especially, contact/distribution lists are a mess. Any way to fix them?
Diane Poremsky says
I would probably recreate the contact lists - the contact grounds in the old outlook.com are different that the ones in the new one (where they are outlook desktop's contact group).
Rony says
Wow, Diane, it is amazing how much time you take to answer so many questions. Thank you for that. My account was migrated to the new O365 infrastructure this week and I have been having issues since. I have a 3 custom domains on 3 accounts that I use as my primary aliases. Each of them have several outlook.com aliases that I don't use. I am able to login with eas.outlook.com but there are many random missing emails on Outlook 2016 (they show on outlook.com). I have been able to retrieve some of them by going on outlook.com, moving them from one folder to another. They then appear on Outlook 2016 again. So, I have been trying to set up my emails using the auto discover method. I changed the CNAME of autodiscover to autodiscover.outlook.com. But now, the following error pops up when I try to add it: "The action could not be completed. The name cannot be matched to a name in the address list." Ever seen that before? Any suggestions?
Diane Poremsky says
Somethings i get way behind in answering tho. :) Try setting the account up using the outlook.com aliases. If you use a subscription version of Outlook, you'll be able to reply using any of the aliases (but i think it will use the one you set as default in outlook.com).
Gordon says
A hint for updating O2k7 Outlook 2007 (maybe other versions) if your outlook email doesn't end in outlook.com or hotmail.com
I struggled with this for ages - my parents had an outlook address that was actually an alias (freeserve.co.uk)... unfortunately the outlook add account wizard couldn't seem to guess that it needed to talk to an exchange server. Eventually I found that under the outlook.com website settings "send from account" there was actually a hidden outlook address, lots of random letters and numbers @outlook.com By copying/pasting this address, I finally got outlook's mail settings (in the control panel) to understand it was a outlook.com type address - and it worked! I haven't yet found this hint on the internet yet...
Diane Poremsky says
It would be better to create a valid outlook.com address and use it to log in - that way if you accidently send using the account, people can reply back to you.

Diane, I have this same issue. I have created a new account with EAS. I tried the option to create anew account with the office 365 setting and that does not work, I was on outlook 2013 when this stopped working, moved to outlook 2016 thinking that would help. Same issue. I do not have any aliases setup, is that needed? I have no idea how to do that . Help please :-) Thank you
Diane Poremsky says
if your outlook.com account is not a microsoft address, you'll need an outlook.com alias if you want to add it as an Exchange account. EAS will work (use eas.outlook.com as the server) for now but at some point after the migration is finished, they will turn that off. (Wild guess: end of 2017 at the earliest). Exchange is definitely a more robust option and supports all outlook features.
Steps are here - https://www.outlook-tips.net/outlookcom/add-alias-outlook-com-account/
FWIW, upgrading rarely fixes problems. When it does, it's usually because a file was corrupt; repair would usually work in this case.

Hi, in the last couple of days two Microsoft Accounts from friends are (automatical) migratet. Both are used as a Windows phone logon, one of them also as an Account for Desktop Windows 10 (plus calendar/contact sync with Outlook 2016).
And both of my friends have the same problem: All of their pictures for contacts a cleared. None of their contacts has a profile picture now.
Has anybody a solution for that? The friend with Outlook 2016 has an older .pst Backup with contacs, but this was a bit out-of-date.
Thanks in advance!
Greetings from Germany, Lars
Diane Poremsky says
Contact photos were lost in the migration - if they have a backup with photos, I have two macros that should work.
Save contact photos to the hard drive, named using the full name: https://www.slipstick.com/developer/code-samples/export-save-outlook-contact-photos/ - this needs tweaked a little to work on any folder so they can open the pst, select the folder and run it.
Import photos: https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/contacts/batch-import-photos-into-outlook-contacts/ - this imports photos in a folder into default contacts. it uses full name format to match the contact to the photo.
I'll try and make time two update those two so they can be used on any folder.

Hi Diane, my account is transfered to the new Outlook.com. Outlook 2016 has all updates. I connected my account today to Outlook 2016 ("Microsoft Exchange") but there is still no alias-support. I can only use my main adress. Any help is much appreciated!
Diane Poremsky says
Are the aliases listed in the From field menu?

(It's also possible to set up the account using any of the addresses, if they are enabled for logging in. )
Peter says
No, there is only my primary alias listed. (The Windows 10 Mail App Shows all my aliases plus my connected accounts llike Gmail etc.). I have no idea how to get this under Outlook 2016 to work.
Diane Poremsky says
Do you have a subscription or the retail version? What is your version #? This capability was added in an update in the spring.
Peter says
My build number is 16.0.4432.1000.
Diane Poremsky says
That is RTM. Is this a volume license or the retail (non-subscription) version.
Peter says
It is a volume license. Sorry if double posted!
Diane Poremsky says
You'll need to wait for Microsoft to release an update - we're not sure exactly when or how it will work for volume licenses but retail is not expected to get any sp1-like updates that add features - they get monthly security updates only.
The monthly updates such as this one: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3118375 are for the volume license - based on your version #, updates are being installed. These features were added to the subscription version maybe 6 months ago, so it's possible you'll get this feature in an update over the next couple of months.
Peter says
Thank you for your reply. That's sad news. I don't see the point in separating the programs into retail and volume license regarding the features.
Diane Poremsky says
For the volume licenses, Admins don't want to roll out updates before thoroughly testing them against their business processes, to verify they won't break something. They've always done this, with many companies just getting RTM when SP1 comes out. The admin *might* be able to switch some users to the subscription model, but I would expect few to do it, mostly because they'd want everyone on an identical version (for support reasons).
The situation with "perpetual" retail is a little different - with the subscription model, you always stay up-to-date and if they released the same updates to the "perpetual" installs at the same time, that wouldn't be true. Time will tell if these perpetual installs get any new features. (Generally speaking, the subscriptions are often a better deal, especially since the "perpetual" license isn't really perpetual. It's tied to the first computer you install it on - you can call once to move it to a new computer.)

Awesome, thanks Diane! Did the trick for me.

HI, I'm trying to setup my hotmail account on a new laptop. Both old and new are running Outlook 2007, and when I go through the setup process, I get stuck at a popup box asking for my password continuously (even after entering it multiple times). Is there anything I need to do to the account on the old laptop to get the new one to work?

Are you using two factor authentication? if so you need to use the app password in outlook.
Do you have all updates installed? Outlook 2007 (and 2010) need fairly recent updates installed to connect to outlook.com as exchange.
Dave says
Thanks, turns out I missed one of the updates!

Hello Diane,
my old custom domains account finally got switched over to the new Office365 backend. However, I'm not having trouble adding it as an Exchange account on the latest MacOS:
I can only add the account, when I use an @outlook.com alias as the username.
But when I try to use my primary account with the custom domain (a DOT DE domain) as the username, I only get an error message saying that the accountname/password could not be verified. MacOS then proceeds to a another input screen with fields for an internal and external URL.
Any idea on how I might get my regular email address to work as an Exchange account on MacOS?
Diane Poremsky says
do you have autodiscover records in DNS? Try pointing autodiscover cname to autodiscover.outlook.com.
AlvinTranNL says
for me this was THE solution to use the new Outlook.com (exchange) with a custom domain.

Dear Diane,
Thanks for the tips, but I will still have an issue. My Hotmail PST file is way beyond 2 GB and Outlook 2003 does not allow me to force Unicode PST file. What can I do ?
Diane Poremsky says
Is the account is in outlook 2003 as POp3? if you created the pst in outlook 2003, the default is Unicode and it can go over 2GB.
Brian Mansell says
Hi Diane, Well after years of complaining ( you too ) the Outlook disaster appears to being solved. My migration has not happened yet. Waiting is often the best policy, but I read something new today :-
" using the Microsoft account as a Windows phone logon "
Can you explain this.
Diane Poremsky says
If the account is used to log into windows phone, they will be among the last to be moved. We think it applies only to accounts with custom ring tomes assigned to contacts, but aren't sure if there are other issues affecting windows phone.
Brian Mansell says
Just realised that my comment was perhaps too pert - I should have written -
" near top of this article it gives reasons why the migration may not be working - one was if you are using the Microsoft account as a Windows phone logon "
I do not understand this.
Brian
Diane Poremsky says
Do you use a windows phone? If this microsoft account is your phone logon, your migration might be delayed. We're not sure if the only issue is with custom ringtones on contacts or if if there is more to it, but having custom ringtones assigned to contacts will delay the migration.

I have Outlook 2003 on my laptop,. I followed the procedures above, and now I can see emails, and open them (although the header processing is very slow), but I cannot send an email. I get this error message: "sending reported error (0x800CCC7D) "Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL secured connections. " Did I miss a step?
Diane Poremsky says
I don't think so... will check it, just in case they turned off SSL support and only allow TLS (which Outlook 2003 doesn't support).
If you don't want to upgrade and don't have an absolute reason why you need to use Outlook, the eM client is a good option.
Anne says
What is the eM client? Thanks!
Diane Poremsky says
it's a free (for up to 2 accounts, often on sale for $30 if you have more accounts) email client that looks a lot like Outlook and syncs calendar and contacts in gmail, outlook.com. It also supports Exchange accounts. It's not as full featured as Outlook, but many users don't need the extra features anyway. eM Client
David says
Thank you very much for posting this. I just got an email congratulating me about the "upgrade", and unfortunately encountered the following improvements:
1. All of my contacts' photos have vanished (I don't have backups of those anywhere).
2. In Outlook 2013 my contacts have disappeared--your post will help me fix that.
3. On my Android cell phone my contact favorites have disappeared--I re-starred them as favorites, but now they're all sans headshots.
Thank you for the guidance on how to alleviate the most significant functionality lost. I am stunned Microsoft didn't think to include these instructions in their upgrade announcement.
Do you happen to know if Microsoft just threw all the photos I accumulated and pinned to contacts over the years into the garbage as part of this awesome upgrade, or whether there's a way to simply turn back on display of those pics again?
Diane Poremsky says
Did you add the photos or did they come from Facebook, etc? Photos set in Outlook didn't sync up to the server and weren't transferred.

Hi Diane, like so many people I have been using Outlook for too many years to recall! I have also been migrated in the last couple of days. The problem I have is that I so need to use my alias as this I use for my business account both on my mobile and on my desktop. Now it sends my return email as outlook_lots of alphanumerics@outlook.com. I set up a eas@outlook.com to try and overcome this but i cannot send from this, my sent mails just go straight to Draft and stay there? In may organisations these days, they will not accept emails coming in to them with @gmail, @outlook etc. so I desperately need to be able to use my Alias, but maintain the syncing of mail, calendar and contacts. Any suggestions???
Regards
Robin
Diane Poremsky says
Honestly, you should be using a business account - yes, it costs (as little as $4/mo per licensed mailbox), but it's part of the cost of doing business.
The only way i know to send from other accounts is to add the address as a connected account then you can send from it. (Knowing which address is the connected account and which is the microsoft address is more difficult tho.)

Hi Diane,
Thanks for a useful article. I have a question please:
My Outlook Mail (Hotmail) account was upgraded to the Office 365 infrastructure the other day and I duly removed/re-added it to Outlook 2016 (big improvement!) but what about the Windows 10 Mail/Calendar/People apps?
Which support both Exchange and Exchange ActiveSync.
What is your feeling on following? Does it add any value? Does it make a difference? -
My first thinking was to leave it using Exchange ActiveSync but EAS is a stripped down/mobile version of Exchange and as Microsoft upgrade the Windows 10 apps the extra Exchange features, that EAS doesn't support, could become features in these apps too.
So I opted to remove my Outlook Mail account and re-add it using the Exchange/Office 365 option. This worked fine but has been added as a separate account alongside my Microsoft account (which happens to be the same account but is now treated separately). Whereas before they were treated as a single account.
This is more of a cosmetic difference though as it looks and syncs much in the same way as the Windows 10 Mail/Calendar/People apps did before.
My thinking is it's still overall better to have it added as an Exchange/Office 365 account than an Exchange ActiveSync account.
What is your feeling on this? Does it add any value? Does it make a difference?
Thanks
Alex
p.s. I wish Outlook 2016 supported Windows 10 integration/Live Tiles so I didn't have to use two sets of apps.

This is your login account? Adding it as Exchange is a better experience in some apps as they will use EWS, not EAS. Some that use EAS for both may include Notes if its added as exchange, which only really matters if you use notes.
You can turn off sync on the account that was added by the login - that should also remove it from the folder list in the app.

My outlook.com has been migrated however I was always using a POP3 account. I cannot send emails using my POP 3 account. I noticed that the POP 3 account was Disabled so I went and enabled it. It still did not work. I then deleted my old POP 3 account and added it again and I still cannot send any emails! This is my business account and I cannot send emails! They all go into the DRAFT folder!
Please help!
Diane Poremsky says
is it an outlook.com account or a 3rd party acddress added as a microsoft account?
If it's an outlook.com address, are the port numbers correct? Do you get any error messages? What version of outlook desktop are you using?
if it's a non-microsoft address, did you add it as a connected account? You need to do this to send mail using a domain not owned by microsoft.
Vincent says
Hi Diane, my wife and I shared a calendar. After removing the share, we followed this link (https://aka.ms/getearlyaccesscheck) to request for the migration, and it was successful (i.e. it registered our request. It had put us on waiting list when we first tried with the calendar share on).
My wife's account was migrated about a week later, but I'm still waiting. It's been almost a month. I have noticed that her pre-migration server was eas.outlook.com and mine is blu402-m.hotmail.com. Apart from that, I don't know what other differences there are between her account and mine, and why hers got migrated and mine still hasn't.
Any thoughts and advice on that?
Also, for post-migration accounts, multiple Contacts folders were created. They look like system folders and can only be seen on the iPhone (under Contacts>Groups). They don't show up on the Outlook client or on the browser site. One of them is "Skype Contacts", which is understandable. But the other folders are "PersonMetadata" and "MeContact".
The problem is with the "PersonMetadata" -- it contains hundreds of "No Name" entries. They can be individually deleted, but my wife has almost a thousand of such entries.
I then checked my kids' iPhones (their Outlook accounts were migrated early this year) and they have the same folders too, with "No Name" entries in the "PersonMetadata" folder. I don't remember seeing these folders when their accounts were first migrated.
Is this a recent issue?
P.S. You've got a great site - thanks!
Diane Poremsky says
The hidden contact folders were accidently unhidden in EAS accounts - they are working on re-hiding them.
Are you using a windows phone and have custom ring tomes set? Have send-only connected accounts? Both will cause delays in migration.
Alex says
If you have a Send-Only account set up will this be removed when you migrate over?
I like to send email showing my Gmail address in the FROM field but don't want to import all my Gmail emails into Outlook Mail just to get this. Gmail still has a Send As feature :-/
Thanks
Diane Poremsky says
The new server does not support send-only accounts, so yes it will be removed - also, anyone with a send only account will be among the last ones migrated.
I tried using a fake incoming server name, but it needs a valid server. :( My recommendation is to deliver that mail to their own set of folders so they can be deleted easily.
Vincent says
I do have Aliases (Send-Receive) but don't have any Send-Only accounts. They are different, right? Could that be the reason for my non-migration?
Diane Poremsky says
send only accounts are listed on the same page as the send/receive accounts but yes, they are different. We don't know for sure if send/receive accounts also block. You can remove them, try the link and see if it says you are still using an unsupported feature.
Alex says
I see the Send-Only feature has been added to the Alias feature (i.e. Send As a 3rd party email address).
That offers more than some would like/need though and also allows you to login to Outlook Mail with that alternative email address.
Diane Poremsky says
If the address is enabled for login, it's a microsoft account and can be used to log in.
You may be able to send from the browser as 'from default address on behalf of 3rd party address' without adding it as a connected account but if its added as a connected account, you can send as that address from the browser or outlook 2016.
Diane Poremsky says
BTW, did you get a pop-up window telling you that they would move you? (My last account that is still waiting gets a pop-up about unsupported features but i can't figure out what feature it's using - i got rid of all known issues.)
Vincent says
Before we stopped the calendar share, the pop-up said we'd be on waiting list due to unsupported features.
After we stopped the share and tried the link again, it said we'll be migrated within a week. My wife's account got migrated a week later, but I'm still waiting.
Diane Poremsky says
Try the link again - i had had to use it a few times with one account.

And when I was trying to change the Send “From” I noticed that the drop-down list with the aliases also contains this outlook_BBB33BCB402A853F@outlook.com and while it is not ticked as the default selected address (selection is set to my primary alias and for some reason it is showing twice in the list – once with the checkmark and once without) – how on earth did it make it there? This GUID is not showing on the list of aliases at all but it shows in the Send From dropdown. This was covered already in https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/outlookcom/outlook-com-migration-status/#comment-199770
but many users have an unresolvable problem with changing the primary alias.
4. To make sure it is not about my Outlook 2010 hidden settings I tried adding account on another computer with Outlook 2013 installed and I got the same thing – email address/app password pair resolved to the mailbox named outlook_BBB33BCB402A853F@outlook.com so it is not specific to the email client.
5. I tried autodiscovery in an attempt to resolve my non-Microsoft address to the mailbox name and this did not work. I tried re-creating the account several times, then changing settings and also doing the “Repair” action several times. Initially “Repairing” ended with the notification window saying that I need to install Hotmail Connector but later on it started resolving the @outlook.com address to the current mailbox name. Deleted the whole profile and added the Exchange account again in a fresh profile – no result.
Because of all those things above that I tried I conclude that @outlook.com accounts are not really fool-proof and certain sequence of actions on the client side may lead to creation of the ugly GUID Golems which at the moment spoil the experience.
Diane – what are my options now? Since outlook.com is a free service what is the chance I could get help from inside Microsoft? I need to get rid of that GUID and I wish there is a way to find out the server URL that corresponds to the primary alias and Send From address?
I know that my issue was already discussed under https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/outlookcom/outlook-com-migration-status/#comment-197024 but I desperately need to make things work, it is vitally important for me.
I am on Windows 7, my Outlook 2010 is fully patched and it is on version 14.7173.5000
Diane Poremsky says
Go to https://account.live.com/names/Manage?mkt=en-US&refd=account.microsoft.com&refp=profile and change your primary account to the outlook.com account. Also make sure you have a display name in your profile. This will fix the problem of sending mail in outlook - it will be from the primary address. Outlook 2010/2007 do not support using a non-primary address - apparently 2013 doesn't either, but Outlook 2016 does as of earlier this year. I don't know if it will be backported to Outlook 2013 subscribers, but is unlikely to be added to the non-subscription version.
You can't get rid of the guid in Outlook 2010, other than by changing the primary address. This version will only use the primary address for sending mail. If you upgrade to 2016, you'll be able to send from the non-ms address if it's added as a connected account.
Ascar says
Thank you, Diane. I can confirm as I mentioned in my original post that 2013 does not work. So, I understand that now the only option I have is to try 2016. Is it possible to have Office 2016 installed side by side with 2010?
Diane Poremsky says
2016 can be installed side by side with 2010 (but not side by side with 2013).

Diane,
My outlook.com has just migrated and I"m using it with Outlook 2016. I've had a connected (send-only) non-MS account set as the default "from" address for years and it's worked well from both outlook.com and Outlook. Now, after the migration, OWA still uses my onn-MS as the default "from" address, but Outlook 2016 defaults to my XXX@outlook.com as the "from" address. Is there any way to get Outlook 2016 to always use the non-MS connected again as the "from" address?
Plus, when I sent from outlook 2016, the non-MS address didn't show up as an option int he from box, so I added it and told it to send using my XXX@outlook.com account. The result was a message from XXX@outlook.com on behalf of XXX@MYDOMAIN.com
Diane Poremsky says
Was the account added as a connected account? It should send correctly if added as a connected account. (I removed the send only account from the next to last account i have that was not migrated, to see if the link to request migration worked... it didn't but it was finally moved overnight. :( )
Andrew Askew says
That seems to be the case sadly. I have Outlook 2013 (old technet license) and I was hoping I could move my primary email off of office 365 (exchange online plan 1) and onto outlook.com with the remainder of my email addresses to save a few $ per month and have a truly unified email account, but nothing worked as sending from the domain alias (via manually adding it in the from section) resulted in "on behalf of" and can't have it default to the address it was sent to (or have the default address be my primary domain address in outlook 2013).
It's a shame too because I felt so excited I was able to tweak my cpanel to essentially "create" a send-only account for the new outlook.com. Looks like the only option really is to wait for Outlook.com premium to send an invite to me.
Ascar says
Hello Diane, I am writing this as an appeal to the final instance of Exchange/Outlook wisdom.
I have been using outlook.com service for several years and when I opened my account I used a non-Microsoft email address for the first and primary alias. Over the years I also opened several @outlook.com addresses. I use the non-Microsoft email address as my “From” address and this is very essential for me.
My account got finally migrated last Thursday night. On Friday I uninstalled Hotmail Connector, deleted Outlook account from the profile and set up the new Exchange account without a hitch. Everything worked, I entered one of my @outlook.com addresses and a new app password and the mailbox/account name got resolved to the primary, non-Microsoft account. MS Outlook 2010 started downloading the messages and I was impressed with the speed as it finished pumping 4.5GB into the OST file in around 2 hours and everything was nice and dandy.
On Saturday I started Outlook client and … it did not connect to Exchange server. This continued for a few hours and I figured that something was done incorrectly the previous night. It might be quite possible that there were problems with the login servers of course and nothing was wrong with how my Outlook was set up and I had to be more patient but OWA was working and messages kept coming to the phone. So I lost patience and deleted the account in Outlook profile and tried to re-create. This is where suffering started:
1. Account stopped resolving to the primary alias but instead it started to generate a wacky outlook.com address like outlook_BBB33BCB402A853F@outlook.com
2. With this setup my email address is showing in the messages as above and if someone replies to an email it does not get delivered, so this is a non-functional email solution for me even if I accepted that my “From” email address changed from non-Microsoft one to some @outlook.com address. My name is displayed correctly but the email address is not, it does not exist, you can’t send an email to it, yet it is my mailbox name.
3. With all these OWA works properly and when I send a message from browser it shows my non-Microsoft address in the “From” field. I tried many things in the serverside settings – changing primary alias and it does not work at all, I tried adding another non-Microsoft alias and setting this email address as the Send/Receive connected account – did not work, emails still show this ugly GUID in the “From” field .
Diane Poremsky says
Outlook 2010 only properly supports the default address - this is set in the Microsoft account. If it's not the Microsoft address, the display name will show the internal address. Outlook 2016 (and possibly 2013) handle it better (and let you select the From address). OWA also handles it better.
1. That is the internal address when you use a non-MS address for the Microsoft account and cannot be used for email. You need to use an Outlook.com alias to set up the account. If you didn't create a display name for the Microsoft account, it will show as the display name. (This isn't new to the move, it's always had this.)
2. You need an alias or connected account to send from. If you add the non-ms account as a connected account, it will work, but if it's also added as a sign-in address, it's hard to identify which one is the connected account - so make sure you test it. https://www.outlook-tips.net/outlookcom/add-alias-outlook-com-account/
Dennis says
I monitor an Outlook.com email account for a Volunteer EMS Service on my iPhone as does another volunteer. My question is it possible to delete email from our iPhones and yet leave the email on the server? I believe that was possible before the account was migrated to Microsoft Exchange. If so how?
Diane Poremsky says
It would need to be set up as pop3 on the phone to do this. POP3 is not enabled on the account by default - go into outlook'com options, find pop3.imap section and enable pop3. The server named and configure to use are there too.
Pax says
Hi Diane, another eager person waiting to migrate. I have removed the Calendar sharing and Windows Phone logon from the 2 accounts I manage and also gone as far as clearing associated devices with the accounts but still on the waiting list.
AFAIK, there should be nothing stopping me. I'm wonder are there other factors that you havent mentioned such as a linked O365 account or the fact that these accounts are on a old .msn.com domain ?
Diane Poremsky says
The other thing I am aware for sure is custom ring tones for contacts. If you have connected accounts -remove them.
Pax says
I never used custom ringtones and haven't used connected accounts for ages ... so I'm unsure what "unsupported features" remain on their end.
Diane Poremsky says
... and they aren't saying. Connected accounts was discovered by another user and that will likely be how we discover other issues.

I have Outlook 2003 on my laptop; I followed all the steps above, and got both my accounts (msn.com accounts) back in Outlook connector, I can see all emails/folders, etc. But when I go to reply to or send a message, it just sits in the outbox. error message says that I can't send SSL emails...huh? What did I miss? Thanks!
Diane Poremsky says
What port # are you using for the outgoing (smtp) server? Try 25, 465 and 587 with SSL enabled (it just worked here with port 25). You also need to tick the box on the outgoing tab in More Settings- My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
FWIW, It's recommended that you either upgrade office or switch to a different mail client (eM client syncs mail, calendar, contacts)... but for now at least, outlook 2003 can connect to office 365. They will eventually require TLS for outgoing mail, which outlook 2003 doesn't support.
Anne says
I had it set at 25, jjust tried 465 and 587, on both accounts...still can't send. I don't use the laptop enough to justify the office upgrade cost - don't need the calendar feature, and can live without contacts, I guess. Just need to get this to work for now. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Diane Poremsky says
Did you also set it to use the incoming settings on the Outgoing tab? (It's working here - using SSL/ port 25 and the checkbox on the outgoing tab is checked.)
Anne says
Yes I did. I'm using Outlook Connector, does that matter? I have two accounts (both msn.com) and I changed the settings for both (as per directions above),
Diane Poremsky says
If the account was moved to the new server, you can't use the outlook connector - you need to use auto account setup to add the account as Exchange if you are using outlook 2007 and newer. Outlook 2003 needs to use Pop3 or IMAP.
Anne says
So if I have two msn.com accounts, I can no longer go back and forth between them within Outlook? If I delete one of them, should I then be able to send from the one I keep? The SSL issue is related to Outlook Connector? Sounds like unless I upgrade, I'm stuck with using Outlook.com with two browsers? Ugh! Thanks for your help,
Diane Poremsky says
Correct, either two browsers or the less used account in a private browser session - two browsers is generally easier as they can remember your login while private browser sessions won't. (If you use a mail client on your desktop or smartphone, logging into both won't be a problem.)

So, today I was *finally* migrated. I assume the "unsupported feature" were really the send-only accounts.
A couple of observations:
- It's obviously a completely automated process; I was migrated at Saturday's night - out of the working hours.
- Rules are not the "unsupported features". As I wrote, I had a couple of rules working with the built-in "Newsletters" category (to filter out non-primary mail). Those were not migrated. (You can actually see the unmigrated rules when you request the diagnostic report in the Rules Settings - file LegacySettings.txt)
- It's a good idea to clear the cookies for microsoft/outlook/live/office/office365 domains after the migration. At first the OWA acted a bit strange. This includes localization and somewhere national characters not working and the ads on the left was shown which I guess shouldn't be there. All of the accounts in our family (all of them on the same custom domain, 3 migrated, 1 left) have always been ad-free. I don't know why - maybe the family Office 365 subscription. All problems were solved by deleting the mentioned cookies.
- The migration has a problem with national characters in the preset signature. It needs to be fixed manually after that.
- Calendar colors are not migrated.
- Windows 10 Mail app no longer automatically syncs the read status of messages. On a message receive a native Windows notification is shown (that's the main reason I use the Mail app - notifications). Then when I read the message online in the OWA, the message notification still hangs there in the Action Center. This was working before flawlessly - when the message was read in the OWA, the system notification disappeared at the same time. (Adding/removing the account for the Mail app as well as adding it as Exchange instead of Outlook didn't helped.
Diane Poremsky says
>> - Calendar colors are not migrated.
Correct - color categories are not moved but the category names should be on the items. If they are not on the master category list, run upgrade to color categories to add them to the master category list. You'll need to fix the colors though.
https://www.slipstick.com/tutorial/how-to-upgrade-to-color-categories/
i'll check on the windows app - i hadn't noticed it but i mostly use the calendar app for reminders, and rarely open the mail app.
vasam says
Also, I'm really missing my Newsletter rules which I mentioned before.
Both the old Outlook.com and the new O365 Outlook Mail pretty reliably categorize incoming newsletters. I used to have a rule using this automatic, built-in category which moved newsletters to a separate folder.
But AFAIK this kind of rules are no longer possible with the new Outlook.
I'm aware of the Clutter functionality but it seems it doesn't work for me. I know it's learning and so but still...
Is there any possibility to use again the built-in categories in rules somehow? Currently, I have pretty mess within my incoming mail since lots of it are just newsletters (which I read later).
Diane Poremsky says
Have you looked at the options for rules at https://outlook.live.com/owa/?path=/options/inboxrules ?
vasam says
Yes, of course I looked at the options for rules. :) I have actually several rules there already.
The thing is it seems like I can no longer have rules like this: "When the message has category 'Newsletters' move it to folder 'Newsletters'"
Diane Poremsky says
Figured as much, but i have to ask because a surprising number of people don't realize Outlook on the web has rules. :)
Outlook on the web doesn't support category rules - you'd need to use subject or sender rules.
They are working on adding Focused inbox to Outlook on the web - should be going live soon. This would work the same as it does in the outlook app on phones and be supported online and in Outlook desktop.

Diane. My outlook.com was upgraded. I followed your instructions but when I added the account to Outlook 2016 it created another EAS account in Outlook 2016 not an Exchange Account. I now have name@outlook.com and name@outlook.com (1) in Account Settings, both EAS. How do I make it an Exchange Account? Am running W10 Pro.
Diane Poremsky says
How long ago was it migrated? It seems to take autodiscover up to 24 hours to update.
Stephen1 says
Thanks Diane/apologies for the edited reply. It had been c. 48 hours. I did a support call with Microsoft and they created a new Profile called “test” and the Exchange setup worked. Can I now simplify things by Removing the previous Data Files/Accounts from the original “Outlook” Profile and adding my name@outlook.com to the Outlook Profile (once autodiscover works)? If that works can I then Remove the “test” profile so I only have one Profile (the Outlook Profile), which may be less confusing long-term.
Diane Poremsky says
You have two choices: delete both profiles and make a new one not called Test with all of your accounts in it. If autodiscover worked for the test profile, it should work for your profile. I would delete the account from the outlook profile then restart Outlook and try adding it back. Hopefully, the test profile updated some settings on your computer so it won't be a problem now.

I thought that I could import them from my backup filed but when I look at my most recent backup files there is only 265KB. I have looked at older backup from 6 months ago and they are there. Can you point me in the right direction. I am using Windows 10 with the latest update and Outlook 2010 Desktop
Diane Poremsky says
Did you remove the connector account from your profile? If so, you might get it back by using system restore and restoring to before it was removed - assuming the data file wasn't deleted. Then Either export the tasks to a pst (and restore back to today) or add the new account then drag the tasks to the new account.

Any guidance on how to set up an account that has been migrated to the new Outlook.com experience BUT uses a custom domain name (a holdover from the Windows Live Domains days) in Outlook 2016 using the newer non-EAS method? All of my mailboxes in the custom domain have the new experience, but none of them autodiscover when I try to set them up within Outlook 2016, and as you know, 2016 no longer gives you the option to manually set up an Exchange account. Thanks in advance!
Diane Poremsky says
I would either add an autodiscover record to DNS -
CNAME:
autodiscover points to autodiscover.outlook.com
this would be the easiest. local autodiscover file (https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/exchange-account-set-up-missing-in-outlook-2016/) should work too.

Hi Diane,
I'm in the UK and finally got my Outlook.com Mailbox migrated to an Exchange server last night. Because I had just one profile in my Outlook 2016 Client (my Outlook.com email address), which was running EAS, I could not "Remove" it because it was the default profile !! No problem, I just used the "Add New Account dialog" to Add my new Microsoft Exchange profile (making it the default), then Removed the EAS profile. I did this on both my Desktop and Laptop and everything seems to be syncing fine today (Mail, Contacts and Tasks). My only question now is with my Windows 10 mobile phone. When I got the phone a while back I set up my Outlook.com Mailbox as the Primary email account on there (those credentials are also used for my Microsoft Account). Because I want to continue syncing my Mail and Contacts on the phone, do I have to set-up a new email profile for Exchange on it - or was that part of the Migration ?? My emails seem to be coming thru, in sync with my Desktop/Laptop but I have not checked extensively yet !! Diane, sincere thanks for all the help and information you are providing - it is much appreciated !!
Diane Poremsky says
It should be fine on the phone, it's supposed to update automatically.
Jeff says
My account was just upgraded recently, which is great, so I deleted my previous Hotmail connector account and set up my Hotmail account as an exchange account, and it all seemed to work fine, with one oddity.
When outlook opens in pulls down the latest emails. But after a point in time, I'm not sure how long, it doesn't seem to receive mail anymore. I need to close outlook and reopen it and new mail then comes down.
It works fine on my iPhone and on the Mac Email client in OSX, but I'm wondering what is happening in outlook and why it sits there "Processing" in tasks, but just won't collect new mail until I close the application and restart it.
Any ideas?
Many thanks, Jeff
Diane Poremsky says
What firewall do you use? Does it bring down mail if you change folders or press Update folder button? NAT firewalls can cause sync issues updating folders, but they will update if you change folders.
Jeff says
Thanks. I use whatever is standard within Windows. I have done nothing special on the firewall side. I have a Mac running on the same network. Updates with hotmail exchange very quickly. I have another PC which seems to be behaving ok at the moment. I don't believe it is a firewall issue tho because it worked fine previously. The only thing that changed is that I deleted the old account and set up a new account (same user and password) as an exchange account.
Any ideas?
Diane Poremsky says
If this is the only computer experiencing problems, then it is likely related to something on the computer. Do all computers connect directly to the router and internet or is one computer sharing the internet connect with others?
Did you try safe mode? To open Outlook in Safe mode: Close Outlook then hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon. You'll get a message asking if you want to start in Safe mode. Click Ok. If it works ok in safe mode then the problem is with an addin.
Martin Hanson says
Alas! My account was upgraded last night (and I was logged onto Outlook.com overnight). It messed up my contacts on my iPhone, as in my texts were labled with phone numbers, not the person's name any more.
I deleted my account from my desktop Outlook 2016 and recreated it with the auto install method. I do not have any of my contacts from that account in my desktop client after waiting all day for it to sync--just an empty contacts page for my account.
My calendar items seemed to migrate ok--at least haven't noticed anything funny.
I did note some message popups over the task bar about sending some very old email--they didn't show in my sent folder thought, so don't know what that was about.
Diane Poremsky says
I'm not sure what the message about sending old mail was about - if it comes up again, get a screenshot.
Are the contacts visible online at outlook.com?
Chad says
Hi. Once migration took place I was able to re-setup Outlook 2016 to use exchange. I was trying to get Windows 10 Mail to do the same but it won't let me use my address if I choose Exchange during setup. It says something about Azure AD. Seems to treat it as a work account. So I setup with the Outlook.com choice and it uses eas.outlook.com after auto setup. Is this correct behavior? I thought it would setup as straight exchange now.
Diane Poremsky says
I was able to add a Hotmail account to Mail app as exchange (uses outlook.office365.com as the server name) but when i tried using outlook.com addresses, it kept bringing up a choose account dialog with my Microsoft account address listed (uses my corp account address). I'm not able to add an outlook.com address - i think it tries to set up one for my login (which is my corp address) and fails.
Krista says
Stumbling upon this site might just be timely!
I'm using Outlook 2013 with my ancient Hotmail account. I had had it set up as IMAP but lately I've been noticing that the folders weren't syncing automatically - I had to click on a different folder and then back on the folder in question before it would sync. Also, if I created a new folder in OL2013 (with or without emails in it), this folder would not sync to Outlook.com (yes, I'm still on Outlook.com). My only workaround was to also create the same new (but empty) folder on Outlook.com and then the messages would sync.
Research suggested a corrupted .ost - so I decided to remove my Hotmail account from OL2013 and recreate it. When I let the setup occur automatically, it was created as EAS - something new and foreign to me but, with the promise of my contacts also syncing, I was excited. While all my folders appeared, ONLY the Inbox ever sync'd. The rest of the folders remained empty. And "Update Folder" remained greyed out. Thinking I was better off with the old IMAP, I deleted again and manually set up my Hotmail account as IMAP. Looks like the folders are filling up with their content but this has not fixed the 2 problems (no automatic syncing unless the folder is clicked on, new folders from OL2013 not being created/sync'd on Outlook.com).
Can you please advise me? If my Hotmail account has not yet been migrated, should I leave the EAS alone for now in OL2013? If so, do you know how to get the 2 IMAP syncing issues I described working? If I should try EAS again, how do I get it to fill in all of my folders with their actual content?
Thank you very much.
(Super-bonus question, if I'm to again try EAS, does "Apply current view to other mail folders" work with EAS? I tried it and it did nothing but when I went back to IMAP, it actually worked.)
Diane Poremsky says
You can actually have both account types in outlook... so you can see which works best.
On the syncing issues, in Send & Receive settings (Ctrl+Alt+S), did you change any settings? Recommendation is to only change the send/receive every nn minutes settings- with 5 - 8 minutes being optimal. Leave everything else on the default.
Apply view should work (it does here)- but EAS is funky so the view might not stick when you restart outlook, especially if you customized one of the built in views. Save it as a custom view. You can also try restarting outlook using the cleanviews switch then customizing and applying views. (The switch will delete all customized views.)

THANK YOU!!!! I started receiving this error message 2 nights ago, and couldn't figure out how to fix it for Outlook 2007. I followed your instructions, and it worked perfectly!

Spring has (just) sprung here in Australia, but still no sign of the server upgrade. Do you have any further information about the migration, Diane?
Diane Poremsky says
No, not much. They did not meet their self-imposed deadline of August 31 and pushed it ahead to mid-2017 (but expect to be finished before then).
Loeberbauer says
I work with Windows 10 and Outlook 2010 and i sync my calendars with Outlook Hotmail connector to Outlook.com. Now my Outlook.com account was moved to the new Server. i removed the MAPI account, deinstalled the Hotmail connector and reinstalled an IMAP account. But now there is no Calendar Ordner in my Outlook 2010 account. and i can't sync my calendar between Outlook.com and Outlook 2010.
what's wrong?
Diane Poremsky says
IMAP is email-only. If you need calendar and contacts, you need to use autoaccount setup so outlook adds it as an exchange account. Outlook needs to have updates from at least the winter installed to connect to the server.
Loeberbauer says
Thanks, but my account Name is xxx.yyy@liwest.at. so autoaccount doesn't func. So i have to configure the Exchange account manually. Where can i find the Server Settings (Server Name, Proxy etc.)?
Diane Poremsky says
if you have the mx records configured, it should work - unfortunately, you can't set up the account as Exchange manually as it uses a unique url for each account - similar to https://outlook.office365.com/mapi/emsmdb/?MailboxId=00037ffe-b40a-9ce1-0000-000000000000@yourdomain.com - but where the GUID is different for each account. You could try setting up an autodiscover.xml record - instructions are at the end of https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/exchange-account-set-up-missing-in-outlook-2016/ - but the easiest way might be to add an outlook.com alias and use this to set up the account - at the very least, it's autodiscover record will contain the information you need to set it up using the other address.

Does sharing calendars via the read-only links count as "calendar sharing"? Should those be removed to increase my chances of getting moved sooner? Are there any other obstacles or restrictions? Thanks!
Diane Poremsky says
no, they shouldn't count as shared, although... the url will change after it's moved, so it might. Stop sharing will help... but it generally takes 30 days for the constraint to expire. The only others I know of are using the account as windows phone log in and using delta sync (outlook connector or windows live mail) but i'm sure there are more.

Ever since the migraton when I print out an email instead of my name the following is printed instead - /O=FIRST ORGANIZATION/OU=EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP(FYDIBOHF235SPDLT)/CN=. How can I get it to go back to my name?

Is that happening with all Hotmail messages or just older (or newer) messages?
Maxwell says
I have seen this happening with all the message in multiple email accounts all of which have migrated to Exchange.
the Accounts are MSN Accounts.
Facing the issue with multiple accounts
Diane Poremsky says
I'm looking into this.
David W says
I cannot create a new outlook.com email account in Outlook 2016 using the new servers. Today I deleted all profiles and created a new profile. During the new profile creation process I added my outlook.com email account, as expected. The email account was successfully created. After opening Outlook 2016, the new email account type is ExchangeActiveSync. Any ideas???
Diane Poremsky says
The account is on the new servers? Is it a new account or was recently moved to the new server? There seems to be a short period of time when autodiscover uses the old server settings for accounts new to the new server, resulting in EAS accounts instead of straight Exchange.
David W says
Diane - Thanks for your reply. The outlook.com email account is an account I have had for several years. So it an older account that I am trying to migrate to the new Exchange servers. Is there a way to work around the "short period of time when autodiscover uses the old server settings for accounts new to the new server"?
Diane Poremsky says
No, just be patient... it shouldn't be longer than 24, 48 hours. ipconfig /flushdns might help (Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, paste that in it and press ok)
Dennis Hartsock says
Is there any new update on the status of when this migration will be complete? My account still has not been moved.
Diane Poremsky says
They updated the calendar sharing warning to June 2017 but that date is supposed to be the worst-case scenario, so hopefully before that date. (Aug 2016 was the previous worst-case and we know how that turned out.)
Tim Lacey says
Do you think that sharing calendar sharing permissions would expedite the transfer? Does the new outlook.com retain the calendar sharing ability between outlook.com accounts?
Diane Poremsky says
Disabling/removing shared calendar may help - you will be able to share again once all accounts that you share with are moved (you can't share across the two servers). But... right now sharing on the new side is limited to read only calendars. (They are working on fixing this.)
Chad says
I un-shared all my calendars a couple of months ago and still show as "using unsupported features" if I try to use the optin link to get my account to upgrade. I was able to use this link on one of my kid's accounts that had never shared a calendar and it upgraded within a couple of days. https://mail.live.com/default.aspx?owaoptin=1
Diane Poremsky says
Interesting. The link to request an upgrade was dead for a few months.
After you stop using a feature that blocks it, it can take 30 days for it to clear.
Steve Edmiston says
I used the link provided in Chad's post and it reported that I was using features still unsupported. I don't share a calendar. I don't have a large number of messages, contacts, tasks, or events and I archive anyway to a local file. No calendar subscriptions. Do you have any idea what features might be blocking the upgrade that I'm not aware of? Could it be because I'm forwarding email from other accounts to Outlook.com? This still does not make for any significant traffic. Less than 20 messages a day and most are deleted immediately after reading.
Diane Poremsky says
Hmm. It could be the rules. Delete them, wait 24 hours or so then try the link again - see if the error comes up. Be sure and post back - if rules are a problem, it could be the reason many others haven't been moved.
The issues I am aware of are calendar sharing, windows phone login, outlook connector/delta sync (i believe this is no longer an issue).
vasam says
Well, maybe the rules are problem. I don't share calendars, WP (instead a WM10 devices is connected to my account), but I have many rules to filer senders (From and Subject fields) and one rule that filters newsletters using the built-in Newsletters category (something like when the category is Newsletters, move the message).
AFAIK this kind of rules (filtering based on built-in categories) are not supported with O365/Exchange (?)
Diane Poremsky says
Any connected accounts pulling in mail from other mail servers or send-only connected accounts? Another user said his account migrated when he removed connected accounts - no confirmation from MS yet, but it's worth a try.
martonv says
I have used Chad's URL and it solved for me. At first I got the message the I have unsupported features. The other day it said that my mailbox will have the new UI in a couple of days. It happened yesterday, Outlook Mail is there. It is much better than the old site. One thing I don't like is the big place on the right side for ads.
Diane Poremsky says
For $20/year, you can remove the ads. If you are in the US and use Bing, Bing Rewards can be used for ad-free Outlook. (I'm pretty sure it's US-only.)
vasam says
Well, today (after deleting the send-only accounts) I've tried again the Chad's link (as I'd tried every day :)) and I'm not getting the "unsupported features" message anymore! It says instead:
"Great! You’ll start seeing new updates soon.
Thank you for signing up to get a first look at the new features in Outlook.com. Within a few days, you’ll see the new experience when you log in."
So I guess we can confirm the send-only accounts as one of the unsupported features(?)
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, I think it's safe to say either send-only accounts or any connected account will prevent upgrades. Thanks for confirming.
Christian says
Yes it must be the send-only account... I deleted it yesterday and today the message changed to "Thank you for signing up to get a first look at the new features in Outlook.com. Within a few days, you’ll see the new experience when you log in."
Tim Lacey says
FYI. . I've been waiting for migration. My account and a few other client accounts which all use send-only accounts to send through non-MS servers by default have all been upgraded in the past 48 hours. I had hoped this would coincide with supporting non-MS default send-from addresses in desktop Outlook, but that is still not working.
Diane Poremsky says
You need to have the account set up as a connected account to send from it in outlook.
Did they keep the send only account set up or was it just added as an alias?
vasam says
I had a few send-only accounts (using external SMTP) so I've deleted them. Only left are aliases (don't use external servers).
Steve Edmiston says
Diane, I'm not sure your reply was intended for me but I'm not actually using any rules. The mail forwarding is being done by Gmail and another provider, not from within Outlook 2016 or Outlook.com. I had set up a few "send only" accounts so I deleted those just for fun. I never used them anyway because I do almost all my sending from Outlook 2016 which doesn't support that feature until after the upgrade. I'm not using any of the offending features that you are aware of. Is there any possibility that there's a problem with accessing Outlook.com from different apps on different platforms? I use Outlook 2016 on Win 10, Nine on Android, Windows 10 Mail just for the live tile (which often doesn't work), and Outlook for iOS.
Diane Poremsky says
Oh, so it's not rules doing the forwarding. I don't think different apps are a problem as all of the apps use EAS. I'm trying to find out if there are other commonly used features that are an issue (like calendar sharing is).
Steve Edmiston says
I was migrated this morning (Tuesday). I don't know squat about these things so I can't say it's because I deleted the "send only" accounts or just coincidence. Whatever, my online mail page reads "Outlook Mail" and all of my various apps for access now show "eas.outlook.com" as the server.
Diane Poremsky says
Thanks! It very well could be any connected accounts, not just send only accounts.
Steve Edmiston says
I forgot to complain: Unless I'm missing something it looks like we can no longer add "send only" accounts. It appears we have to add full sync accounts which in the case of Gmail means having several folders appear in the navigation pane, folders I don't use and would rather not see.
Diane Poremsky says
Yeah, I tried adding an account with a bad incoming server and mail would not send until i used a valid server. :( A valid username and password should be enough to send.
Chad says
Mine finally just migrated. They must be making progress even on the accounts that were using "unsupported features"
Diane Poremsky says
They are making progress - my family is about 90% migrated - of 16 accounts all but 2 are moved, with 3 moving between Aug 12 and Sept 2. One of the accounts that is left is a live account that just will not migrate - I was able to request migration over a year ago and gave them that address - nothing. I've used the urls to request it - no messages saying it couldn't be moved, but it never moved. I tried the url you posted - will see if that works (it hasn't moved as of 15 min ago).
Christian says
I get the same message about unsupported features if I use Chad's link. Im not using calendar sharing or windows phone login, I have no rules or categories/filters. But i have >10k messages in the Inbox and a Send only POP account as default address... Do you have any idea, what might be the problem?
Diane Poremsky says
No, i don't know what could be the "unsupported feature" - I'm trying to find out.
martonv says
And how can I find out which feature is that? I get the message that I have a feature that is not supported yet. I am a simple outlook.com email user with iOS and Mac devices and Xbox. No shared calendar etc.
Diane Poremsky says
They aren't telling, in part because the list chances as they discover a problem and fix others.
vasam says
Yeah, same here. I'm starting to feel that it has something to do with the number of messages in the mail box. I have several tens of thousands messages over the years (I didn't have any reason to delete them).
Kathy Stone says
I was able to delete and re-add an account that had been migrated (I am using Outlook 2010) and it is a @live.com account. My problem is that calendar settings had been customized quite a bit--most significantly color coding and categorization of appointments. That seems to get lost in the syncing process. Is there a way to save/restore the customization before I delete and re-add the account? It was a lot of work to set up and with take a long time to redo manually.
Diane Poremsky says
IF the account with the categories is still in outlook, you can use a macro to export the colors.
https://www.slipstick.com/developer/get-color-categories-and-restore-them-using-vba/
If not, the categories should be on the items, but you'll need to add them to the master list (using upgrade to color categories) and change the colors.

This may be a double post, sorry if it is!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! I've run into a problem though adding my Hotmail account back to Outlook 2010. After adding, when I try and open up Outlook I get a box titled, "Microsoft Exchange" and it's asking for the Microsoft Exchange server and states, "Once the names have been checked and underlined click OK." Any ideas on how to get this to work? I'm not sure what to add here.
Thanks so much for your help!
Diane Poremsky says
You can try using outlook.office365.com as the server - but as a rule, you need to use auto account setup and let outlook find the server names.
Richard Laughton says
Thank you so much for this information as reading the Microsoft information on the error code and understanding what to do is near impossible. In 15 seconds you made it very clear just to REMOVE the account in OUTLOOK 2010 and let it reinstall automatically. That worked perfectly!
I think I created the problem by adding new folders in my OUTLOOK profile within OUTLOOK 2010 and perhaps I should have made those within the OUTLOOK on the web at mail.live.com instead. I tried that today, although it would not let me make a SAVED folder I could make one called MY VAULT. I did that with the NEW FOLDER link on outlook.com and when I synced on OUTLOOK 2010 the folder appeared and worked perfectly.

Hello Diane,
I am using Windows Live 2012 and inputting the correct Pop settings as listed in the article, I am able to send and receive messages, however I am not able to download my old folders from my hotmail account.
I think the problem has something to do with this message I get.
It refers to the TIP/IP error 0x800CCC13 and citing it has something to do with the pop server pop-mail.outlook.com.
Diane Poremsky says
POP3 is email only - no subfolders. If you need the folders, you'll need to set it up as imap.
c3pohara says
Hi, I was wondering if you had any information on whether Microsoft was still anticipating completing the migrations by the end of this month (August). I have been eagerly waiting for my account to be moved...a group I work with depends heavily on calendar sharing...they all got moved to the new system months ago and I am still stuck on the old one, and it doesn't let you share calendars between the two!
Diane Poremsky says
No, they probably won't be done and have updated the page that comes up when you try to share a calendar with someone on the other server with mid-2017. They are moving hundreds of thousands a day, so maybe soon.
gspot says
This article saved me a massive headache of researching and trying to figure out the issue. Thank you!

My account has been migrated. I had no problems with outlook 2007 auto configuring the exchange connection. Email works fine for a few days. Then suddenly outlook reports that exchange is "disconnected" and I see "trying to connect to connect to Microsoft Exchange" in the status bar. I can't send or receive. So I blow away the outlook profile and let it re-autoconfigure, and it works for a day or so, then suddenly stops won't connect again. I checked my outlook 2007 version at it is later than the recommended version. Any ideas? It is time consuming to recreate the account every day and wait for it to resynch all the folders. Thanks!

Diane - I have been getting the (0x8004102A) error on my Outlook 2010 account whenever it does a send/receive - but when I check Outlook.com I still see the old banner and it appears my account has not yet been migrated. The connector is still working. I use an alias as my primary address that is not an outlook.com address. Do we need to follow the instructions on adding an alias in order to get the account to migrate - or does that step come after? I have been using your instructions to sync two diff PC's to my Outlook.com account - one with Outlook 2013 and the other with Outlook 2010 and it works great. Really looking forward to getting the bug fixes from the new server so the 2013 version behaves properly.
Diane Poremsky says
The alias step comes after migration, although it doesn't matter when you do it.
How longing have you been getting this error? You only get this error with Outlook 2013?
Mike I. says
Have been getting the error for a couple of weeks now. Only on Outlook 2010 - not 13. But the send/receive and sync are still working fine on both.
Diane Poremsky says
Do you have all updates installed in Outlook 2010? Did you try removing the account from your profile and adding it back using auto account setup or even creating a new profile with just the outlook.com account in it?
Mike I. says
yes - all updates installed. Will I need to create an xxx@outlook.com alias in order to get the auto account setup to work? Currently set up using IMAP.
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, if you are using a non-microsoft address (such as from your internet provider or yahoo, gmail etc) with outlook.com, you'll need an outlook.com alias to configure the account as an Exchange account.
Mike I. says
Once you do this, will calendar invites come from the outlook.com address? If so, is there a way to get them to come from the non-Microsoft address? What happens with incoming calendar invitations that are sent to the non-Microsoft address?
Diane Poremsky says
if you set the non-ms account up as a connected account, you might be able to send from it. (I had started to test it but found a bug in outlook and messed with figuring it out instead. :)) I'll also try using a macro to set an address, however, meeting requests only offer accounts, not the aliases, as From addresses so it probably won't work.
Mark says

I'm trying to get an updated date... they are still working on it though.
Brian says
Same here! I still haven't been migrated and we're getting towards the end of August.
Diane Poremsky says
It looks like they are behind schedule (new date in calendar sharing says mid- 2017) - they are moving a huge number each day, so they will eventually get to you.
vasam says
Hello, we have a custom domain with 4 accounts. 2 of them have been migrated but the rest of them haven't. Are we the only one left un-migrated? I'm feeling more and more left behind. :-)
Diane Poremsky says
No. My family has at least 1 account still waiting too. (At last count, were had 6 of 16 waiting - I haven't checked on the other 5 accounts since March and April.)
vasam says
Well, now when I try to share a calendar from a migrated account to the "old" account, I get a message: "We expect the upgrade to be finished in the first half of 2017."
So no end of August 2016 but end of June 2017 :-(((
Diane Poremsky says
Ah... i meant to check that last week. The date they give there is supposed to be the "absolute last date" to be finished, with time built-in to account for problems with the expectation that they would be finished prior to that date.

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I have Outlook 2003 and followed your instructions yesterday and everything worked fine. This morning however I can receive emails but not send. I get a similar error message to that before I followed your tutorial ("Sending reported error (0x800CCC7D): Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections. etc" It is like Microsoft read your tutorial and then did something to make my Outlook stop working again. Should I just give up and go to another program?

SSL support in 2003 is buggy - it doesn't support TLS so Microsoft had to make some changes server side. It would be better in the long run if you either upgraded or switched to an email client that properly supported TLS (as all newer clients should).
James Whiley says
This article was a life-saver. I didn't see any emails from MS indicating that the hotmail connector was no longer operative. I just followed your instructions on setting up the account using the auto account setup and it came right back up. Thanks a lot!

Hi,
I have a pretty difficult question for you about office 2007 and the migration. I didn't receive any email from MS regarding the migration, the only way I found out was my outlook connector stopped working and after searching google I came across your blog! I notice when I sign into the webmail of outlook - it says in the upper left corner, "outlook mail" so I am guessing it has migrated.
So I removed the connector, and I went in and deleted the account from my office 2007.
Then following all the steps to re-add my outlook.com account to my office 2007, I am making sure my outlook 2007 is closed, and I open the mail via the control panel and follow the rest of the steps for the auto configure - - but I get a small pop-up box with keys showing and along the top it says "connect - and a bunch of numbers" and asking for a "User name" and a "password". If I enter my user name and password, it does nothing, it pops away, then pops right back up again. So on that same small box, when I hit cancel (since it doesn't work) the error message says "The action cannot be completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." Of course if I have outlook open when I try to add the account - the message says I can't have outlook open when I complete the action.
So I am curious if you have come across this issue and what I might be able to try?
Thanks!

is your logon email address a Microsoft domain (outlook.com, live.com, Hotmail.com) or your personal address (from isp, gmail, etc) ? If it's not a Microsoft address, you'll need to create an outlook.com alias.
Can you post a screenshot of the connect dialog? I'm especially interesting in the bunch of numbers.
Dan says
I'm having the same exact problem as this above. When I click on Exchange, POP, IMAP it goes through a process and comes up with a pop up box "Connect to 00067ffe-8747-206d-00000......@hotmail.com
User name and Password is required. Tried both my hotmail account details and my local domain server details. Neither work
Diane Poremsky says
Did you open this account using a non-microsoft address (such as gmail or an isp email address) as a Microsoft Account (aka live id, passport)? I know that scenario creates weird Outlook.com addresses but I haven't seen it do that with hotmail addresses.
Janri says
Hey all.
I am also experiencing this problem but I tried to set up my Hotmail.com account.
Got a message saying:
Connecting to 0006bffd-a162-8fd8-0000-000000000000@hotmail.com
Then it asks for username & password.
Diane Poremsky says
Something happened to your alias. :( Non-microsoft (outlook.com, Hotmail, live.com) addresses always have the GUID for an alias but Hotmail addresses should be ok. Does it show that as your address when you log into Outlook.com and expand the menu under your name/picture in the upper right corner?
Mike says
It's amazing that Microsoft has done FAR more to alienate its customers than all other software and hardware providers combined by not properly supporting their products and making change after change after change with stuff that just plain doesn't make any sense. The failure of a great product in Zune and all the legacy customers they trashed (including me) in this stupid Xbox music, now Groove (WTF?). The Microsoft Kin. Microsoft Points. POINTS? Who the hell does THAT stuff? And so on. Sure, they're making profits but they wonder why their stock is falling. Duh. I'm sick of having to delete whole accounts and re-configure them just to get something to work. It's time for people to stop forgiving Microsoft and giving them a pass and start leaning on them with some pressure to get their shit together or get out of the business. Period.
Sandy says
Hi Diane,
I've followed your instructions for adding an outlook.com account to outlook 2007, using the CPanl - Mail --> Auto-Add new account instructions. After I enter the user name and account info, a new window pops up prompting again for a username and password and will not allow me to proceed, even though I've entered the correct @outlook.com name and password.
If I clear the error, it takes me back to the auto-add screen with a failure notice, and has filled in the MS Exchange server field with a bunch of garbage@outlook.com and the Mailbox is listed as =SMTP:myusername@outlook.com
Any idea what's going on?
Diane Poremsky says
Were you able to get it set up? This: =SMTP:myusername@outlook.com means there is a problem with autodiscover or the server settings. It usually will work a bit later. (Yes, I'm way behind in answering, was swamped with real work. :))

Hi Diane, Since a few days ago my Hotmail account e.g. Hotmail.co.uk which was using outlook connector stopped working in Outlook 2007. I removed the account, removed the Outlook connector and restarted everything again, e.g. downloaded Outlook Connector and set it up again because using auto discovery (encrypted or not encrypted does not work, it does not recognise my account).
I can open my account via the internet, that is no problem, but I would like to open via my Outlook 2007 software, I have read all the posting but nothing appears to work for me, it keeps not recognising me either through self seeking or by me creating a profile via Email in the Control panel, the message I get is as follows:

Was your account moved to the new server? (The errors indicate it was.) If the url is outlook.live.com, it's on the new server and the Connector WILL NOT work. You need to use auto account setup to add the account to Outlook as an Exchange account. (You need updates from 2015 installed.)
Charles Barker says
Hi Diane,
I really do not know if I was moved to the new server, all I know is that it was working until a couple of days ago and then it not. How do I check if I have been moved and how do I find the updates for 2015?
Thank you
Charles
Diane Poremsky says
log into outlook.com - what is the url? outlook.live.com\owa is the new server. I'm guessing it was probably moved... Run windows update and have it check for other MS programs (if that is not already enabled).

Diane, On my question below, I forgot to add that my account has been added to the new server. Thanks!
Melinda Zalma says
Hi Diane, I'm sorry of this is a double, but after confirming my subscription, I don't see my question. So here it is again:
I have Outlook 2007 (supported version) and cannot get it to connect to my live.com account. I removed the account from Outlook and have tried re-adding it via Hotmail Connector and Add Account using auto detect. Nothing works. Using Auto detect gives me an error message saying that I can't add an exchange account with outlook open and to close it and add the account in the Control Panel. But it is there.
Using Hotmail Connector gives me the original error message:

The Connector won't work if the account was moved to the new server. To add the Exchange account, close Outlook and go to Control panel, search for Mail - open your profile and add it there.

Diane, I have Outlook 2007 (supported version) and my live.com email has migrated to the new server. I tried following your steps above, but when I try to do the auto-discovery of the account, I get an error message that I can't set up an Exchange account with Outlook open and to do so under Mail in the Control Panel for the computer. Yet the account is set up in there. Please advise how I can get this to work again! Thank you.
Diane Poremsky says
>> Yet the account is set up in there
is it set up as an Exchange account when you look in control panel, mail?
Melinda Z says
Yes, it is set up as an exchange account in the control panel. I went back to Outlook and tried the auto set up and the exact error message I received was: You cannot add a Microsoft exchange account to this profile while outlook is running. Exit outlook and use the mail icon in the control panel to add a microsoft exchange account.
Thank you.
Diane Poremsky says
I added screenshots and steps to add the account thru the control panel, mail applet in the To remove and re-add the account in Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2007 section.
Melinda Z says
I followed your directions above and chose exchange server with outlook.office365.com as the server and my email address as the user name, which Is the information given in the Mail section of the Control Panel. I tried also just my user name as the user name but neither worked.I get an error message that my server or mailbox names cannot be resolved. Please advise.
Diane Poremsky says
Were you able to get the account added to your profile?
Melinda Zalma says
I tried to re-add the account using the manual option and clicked Exchange Server for email type. For server name I put in the office365 server that is in the account information in the control panel, and put my full email address as the username. I clicked "Look up name" and the response I received was that either the server or the username couldn't be resolved. Please advise!
Diane Poremsky says
You need to add the account using auto account setup - office 365 can't be set up manually.

This has been awful! I had to delete both my hotmail and outlook.com accounts. I have managed to re-install my hotmail.co.uk account to outlook 2010 using hotmail connector (which I reloaded), but still can't get the outlook.com account to work. I have tried adding a new profile and putting it in that, but that doesn't work - outlook doesn't like a new profile. I've tried to add outlook.com address to the same profile but I'm not clear of any manual settings (do I add it as an Exchange account and if so what is the server name?)
Diane Poremsky says
You can add it as a second account to the profile but need to use autodiscover and let Outlook set it up.

What version of outlook do you use? Was your account moved to the new server?
Aftab says
All of a sudden i am having problems with my hotmail connector in so far as not all accounts continue to receive or send messages. i got them to receive again by deleting the accounts and then recreating using manual settings including using imap/smtp instead of the previous self assigned MAPI if the hotmail connector option is selected.
however, the accounts will not send now. i am using incoming mail server as imap-mail.outlook.com and outgoing server as smtp-mail.outlook.com. i even changed the outgoing to my default service provider's but still it will not send.
Could you offer any suggestions of how could get them working again?

I solved the migration problem--thank you so much but I don't want all my outlook emails to show up in the in box together, I have separate emails for a reason, how can I separate them again
Diane Poremsky says
What types of email accounts are in your profile? Which version of Outlook?
Each account should have it;s own set of email folders if you added the accounts to outlook.
if you use outlook.com and set up the accounts as connected accounts, you have the option of delivering the mail to a subfolder of your mailbox.
Eddy says
Thank you so much! I had no idea what was going on until I found your solution.

Hello Diane,
My @outlook.com account has finally been migrated. I have never used Outlook 2016 on this computer before, only the other Office 2016 products. I do not have any other previous versions of Outlook in this machine before therefore I do not have Outlook Connector ever. I installed all Office 2016 updates and fired up my Outlook 2016. Since this is the very first email account I'm adding, the "Auto Account Setup" is shown and I filled it up with my name, @outlook.com email address, and app password. My @outlook.com account is auto-discovered and auto-configured. Everything's a breeze and I'm receiving emails very soon after that.
Then I pulled up my "Account Settings" and realized that my newly added email account is of type "Exchange ActiveSync" instead of "Microsoft Exchange" shown in your screenshots. Is there a step that I may have missed?
Diane Poremsky says
Was your account moved to the new server yet? Log into uotlook.com to find out - if the url is outlook.live.com and the banner above the inbox says 'outlook mail', it's on the new server and should set the account up as exchange. If it's still on the old server, it will be set up as an active sync account.
Jason Law says
Yes, my account was already migrated to the new server. It's everything you described. And yet the problem is as I've outlined in my previous message.
Diane Poremsky says
If you add the account back now, does it still come up as an activesync account? There seems to be a delay between when it's moved and when autodiscover knows it was moved.
Dave says
Just want to add my huge thanks to the others above for solving this problem for me. I have multiple hotmail addresses and they were just stopping one by one with no explanation. Was getting very frustrating but your step by step solved it quickly and understandably. Thanks again

Hello Diane,
My live account has quit syncing in Outlook 2010. I followed your instruction and set up an new exchange account after deleting the old IMAP account. After completion I was unable to log in, continually asking for my password. I removed Outlook Hotmail connector, restarted and attempted to creat another Exchange account, now I get a message that I need to install Outlook Hotmail Connector. I'm at a loss and would appreciate any help.
Diane Poremsky says
Log into outlook.com - as the account moved to the new server? If the url is outlook.live.com, it is on the new server and the outlook connector will not work.
Do you have all Outlook updates installed?
Mike says
Thank you for your prompt reply. Yes the URL is 'outlook.live.com.
This is a new laptop running Win10 Home. I transferred my Office 2010 to this laptop downloading the software from MS. According to update all is current
Diane Poremsky says
Should read older comments first - i see you can log in to outlook.com ok. That is the url for the new server, so you definitely won';t use the connector.
Mike says
Also.
Now when I go to add the account I get a message after the first page of setting up the new account, "In order to manage this account in Outlook you must download and install Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector.
Mike says
One last try, not sure why my replies are being deleted. Still haven't successfully been able to sync my outlook.com account with outlook 2010. Updates are current now, they weren't. Removed Hotmail Connector again, created the account and it is successful in all appearances. When I restart Outlook I continually get asked for my password.
Diane Poremsky says
They aren't being deleted - everything stays in moderation until i have a chance to reply (easier to find the comments that need replies) and i was on vacation last week - so i have a ton of comments to work through.
The password prompt is constant? Can you log into Outlook.com ok? Are you using two factor authentication with your account? if so you need to use an app password.
Rick Ludolph says
Hi Diane,
Thanks to you, I was previously syncing my Outlook 2016 with my Outlook app using EAS. Of course, this was not ideal.
Now that my Outlook.com account has finally been migrated, I seem to have lost track of the big picture on how best to organize everything. I originally had 3 PST folders and an EAS account. I successfully removed the EAS and then added back the Exchange account.
After that was working, I proceeded to copy folders (stored emails, calendars, and contacts) from my PST accounts into the Outlook.com (Exchange) account so that I would have access to them on my phone. When copying, I setup the 3 original PST accounts as separate folders in Exchange so I could monitor mail arriving in each. My current Outlook 2016 accounts list now shows the Exchange account (with a weird 68EAxxxxxx.outlook name that I cannot change) and the 3 PST files. I have the original main PST set as "send from by default" account.
So far, all my incoming mail is arriving in the proper folder in the Exchange account. When I go to send, however, it defaults to sending from the weird account name so I have to choose the proper From account for every email. When I send a new mail, I have to first select from the 3 "Contacts" address books in the drop down (I cannot just type the name and have it pulled in to the "To" field as before. I also am seeing lots of duplication across my contact lists (I have 6 or 8 contact lists from before).
Where did I go wrong? I cannot seem to find any detailed instructions for best practices on setting up the Exchange account once it is in Outlook 2016.
Diane Poremsky says
This is a common problem and unfortunately, you'll probably need to continue selecting the correct sending address. You can add the other accounts as connected accounts and give them sign on capability in outlook.com and set one as default, but it doesn't always help (and won't make a difference for additional accounts).
On the contacts - did you move or copy the conact folders that ere in the pst? If so, remove the pst from your profile. Next, go to address book's tools > options dialog and set the most used contacts folder as default. If you have duplicate folders, you'll need to remove them.

Hi Diane,
My account was recently migrated. Before the migration I was using connector to "see" my email on the Hotmail server and I could do that with my phone and outlook on PC. Whenever, I sent an email, that email was updated in my sent box in my phone and on my pc and online. With the new setup, all the emails were downloaded on my pc. There is nothing left on the server and I cannot see anything on my phone. Is there a way to sync everything so that I can see the same thing on the outlook app on my pc, phone and browser? Please help.
Diane Poremsky says
What version of outlook do you use? Was the account added to outlook as an exchange account? if, for some reason, you can't use exchange, set it up as an imap account, never use pop3.

Hi Diane,
I need your help. My hotmail account has been migrated to the new server. It is working fine on my mobile and through web browser but having an issue with Outlook 2010. I have removed by previous account and uninstalled outlook connector. When I re-configure my hotmail account using auto account set up, it asks for connector, which I have re-installed but after successful configuration, when I restart my outlook, the credential window pops-up and keep asking for password although I enter it correctly. Please recommend how to resolve this.
Diane Poremsky says
The connector will not work if the account was moved. Uninstall it. You need to set it up as an exchange account. Make sure you have all updates installed - that is required.

I had an alias for my account which was not an Outlook.com domain, so the auto discover would not work. Created an Outlook.com alias in my outlook.com mailbox online, made it primary, configured Outlook 2013 using auto discover on the MS Exchange ActiveSync and then switched my alias back to my other email account. It now allows me to view my calendar on my PC using Outlook 2013 & on Android.

Hi Diane
One of my accounts has been migrated. On iPhone do I add account as Outlook.com or Exchange and use eas.outlook.com for server address?

You can set it up as either - auto discover should find the correct server, but if you set it up manually, choose exchange type and use eas.outlook.com.

I have four LiveDomains accounts, all of which have yet to be moved over to the new 365 backend. Any idea on when the migration might happen for those accounts?
Diane Poremsky says
No, sorry. The only information I have is that if the account is used to log into a windows phone or is sharing calendars, it will be moved last. Windows Live Mail users are also among the last to be moved.
YDrabbit says
No wonder my email hasn't been migrated. Windows phone users as second class citizens :(
Diane Poremsky says
It's not quite that bad... :) They are trying to avoid making it painful. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is - if its related to the Microsoft account or the email side... it's not a problem with windows desktop login, just phones.
Jeff says
It seems I haven't been migrated yet. I've got a very old email Hotmail address, and I'm based in UK. Has migration completed? if I log in on the web, I see Outlook.com on the banner not Outlook Mail. So feels like I'm not migrated yet, but wondering if I need to do something. What can you tell me about the migration status as it affects me, if anything? Thanks.
Diane Poremsky says
they are still doing the migrations. Anyone who shares calendars or uses the account as their windows phone login will be some of the last to be moved. Using windows live mail also delayed the move, but i think that was lifted and those accounts are being moved. AFAIK, ETA is no later than the end of August 2016.
Jeff says
Thank you. Very helpful.

Hi Diane,
You just saved my life! After many hours on net searching a solution i found your post and your clear instructions on how to re configure my Outlook.com account into MSOutlook 2010. What a shame that Microsoft did not take the time to advise their clients.
Great job Diane!

Hi, Diane, and help please!
Using Outlook 2010 and, as well as my ISP account, am collecting mail from my live.co.uk account.
This stopped last week so I followed your post-migration outlined steps. Failed, because it wants to dnld and install the Hotmail Connector again. Allowing this proceed gets me to an added a/c which can't open/expand an .ost file. So I can't even get back to where I was regarding old mail in this a/c.
I can log on the Live a/c via a browser with no problems. BTW, the top line banner says "Outlook Email" rather than "Outlook Mail". Have I actually been migrated?
Diane Poremsky says
I think it was migrated. You can verify by looking at the url - outlook.live.com/owa is the new server.
Do you have all outlook updates installed?
Iain says
Nice tip, thank you - confirms I'm on the new server. As best I can tell, all Outlook updates are in there. I have the setting for automatic updating of other MS products turned on, and I've checked a few of the relevant files' details for the correct versions - they look OK.
Diane Poremsky says
it might just be a transient error that will fix itself, especially if the account was just moved.
Iain says
Diane, FYI. My issue was down to Two-Step Verification. Opened the Live Mail a/c in a browser, logged on and sorted out a new app password. Used that in Outlook 2010 and hey presto!
Tom says
Thanks very much Diane.
I was getting the 0x8004102A errors. You clearly identified the problem and solution and it worked! No more error messages. Thanks again.

HI Diane, my Microsoft account was migrated last week and I had been using Hotmail Connector to sync mail only from Outlook 2007 on my desktop. After updating to the Exchange Server, all of my tasks and calendar appointments were synced as well and I haven't been able to find a way to disable this. I wonder whether this simply just isn't possible... I basically want to sync my emails only, so that I can still use Outlook on my PC to archive mail, but I don't want my tasks/calendar being online. Do you have any ideas about how to solve that?
Diane Poremsky says
Set the account up as POP3 or IMAP if you only want to sync email. (You'll need to enable pop3 in outlook.com options, but imap should be enabled by default).

Why does Microsoft have a further difficulty when we have our "mobiles" syncing our emails from Outlook.com ?? It must be a year that we have been waiting, do you have any further update about how much longer we have to wait ??
Diane Poremsky says
I'm not sure of the exact problem with the winphone login, i thought it was something with the ms account and how it automatically configures the email account on the phone.
I haven't been able to get any information on how far along they are. If you try to share a calendar with someone on the other server, the message says they will be finished moving by the end of August. This is supposed to be a worst-case scenario date. Time will tell if they make that deadline. :(

Someone know how to change this in Outlook 2010?

I have an outlook.com custom domain. As of Monday, it was no longer receiving email. I can login online. The top banner says 'Outlook Mail', so I guess I am on the new servers.
I use Outlook 2013. I removed my account which used eas.outlook.com and attempted to read the account using auto-setup. It searches for the account, but then I am told that an encrypted connection is not available. When I click Next for an unencrypted connection, it says 'we are having trouble connecting to your account'.
I would like to use exchange services with this account. Thoughts? And thank you in advance!

Hi Diane. I also have custom domains on (the OLD) Outlook.com that have not yet been converted. And I do have autodiscover DNS records set for them - with a value of autodiscover.hotmail.com. If one does set an autodiscover DNS record for a custom domain using the NEW Outlook.com, what should the record value contain?
Diane Poremsky says
That should work even after it's migrated. autodiscover.outlook.com ahoulds also work, but I'd only change it if there is a problem.

Hi,
My Outlook.com has been migrated to Outlook Mail. However, only my contacts are migrated. All my mail, calendar, task are gone. Both with the web client as well as app using Exchange protocol.
I tried adding the Exchange account in iPad and OS X but only Contacts appear. I have tried sending myself test mail and they do not appear in https://outlook.live.com/owa/ or the iPad.
I do have my Microsoft Outlook 2016 configured with EAS which still works properly.
New mail only appear in setup with EAS, not the web, not Exchange
Do you have any suggestion on what should I do to fix this?

I have a hotmail.com wich is https://snt151.mail.live.com/ I already put use pop in the options of the website. Could someone indicate me what would be the correct servers and ports for that? Tanks in advance (sorry for my bad english)
Diane Poremsky says
Instead of using pop3, use ActiveSync. If the phone is really old it might not have an option for outlook.com in the mail setup, so choose Exchange instead (may be called Corporate on some old androids). Use m.hotmail.com as the server address and fill in the username with your email address. The other fields can be blank (except for the password of course.)
Ciel Kehm says
OK - I am on windows 7 and using Windows Live to collect email from 3 accounts ( MSN, hotmail and outlook). I love this program and would like to continue to use this instead of the outlook in Office 365 because I don't want to pay for this software after the 1 yr free period is over. I use my calendar quite a bit too and need to continue.
My Question - is there a way to continue using Windows Live by changing to a POP or IMAP ? As of now I haven't been migrated but know it's coming. I need all the detailed help that you can provide. Do I have to do anyone on the outlook.com end?
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, you can use pop3 or imap (imap is recommended) - but you will lose calendar and contact sync. Log into your account at outlook.com and look in options for the pop3 and imap settings. imap should be on by default but pop3 was disabled on my accounts and needed to be enabled.
Server name: imap-mail.outlook.com
Port: 993
Encryption method: SSL
Server name: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Port: 587
Encryption method: TLS

Hi Diane
Thanks for this, I was having the error you quote above...
...but, I removed my "old" account (a @msn.com one) from Oulook 2010 and then tried to re-add it. Got the same error. I then removed it once more after removing the connector. But then it prompted me to download anfd install the connector again! Any ideas?
Diane Poremsky says
Was the account moved to the new server? If so, ignore the prompt - you either need to use autoaccount setup or IMAP (or pop3) after the account was moved.
If it was moved, do you have all updates installed for office?
Bill says
My account was recently upgraded to the "new" Outlook.com. I have searched and searched for a way to disable/turn-off the recovery of deleted items. This was possible prior to my account being upgraded. I do not have the time nor patience to manually purge items from the recovery bin. I access all of my mail via a web browser.
Diane Poremsky says
It can't be disabled in the consumer accounts. I don't know if this will be changed in the future (will check on it). I know outlook has a purge all button in the recovery bin - surprised its not in Outlook on the web.
You don't need to tick each item to select all items to be purged - you can select the first one, hold shift and select the last to select all then purge. But it looks like 20 or so is the max you can bulk select.

Hello Diane,
my Outlook.com has already been moved over to the O365 backend. I've been able to successfully add this account as a regular Exchange account on my Mac running El Capitan.
But I've noticed an interesting technical issue:
Authentication during setup only works with an username which ends in a .com domain (like @outlook.com). When I instead try to use my regular email address (@outlook.de) I get an SSL certification error, saying the hostname doesn't match to the mail.live.com certificate.
So I basically had to create an alias just to be able to use the new Exchange functionality. Doesn't sound right to me... Ever heard of similar issues?
Diane Poremsky says
No, i haven't heard that before. I'll ask about it. Was there an 'use this ssl cert anyway' button?
Tom says
I've made some pictures to illustrate the problem.
There is an option to "alway trust" the hostname. But this doesn't seem to work as the user/pass can't be validated either.
For comparison, an @outlook.com alias for the very same account works fine:
Diane Poremsky says
Thanks I waiting to hear back from support about this.
Tom says
Did you receive word on this issue?
Diane Poremsky says
No, but i asked about it again.

Hi Diane,
I have one msn account and two outlook accounts in my 2010 Outlook program on my PC. The msn account has just been migrated to the new outlook server. My question - you say above if you have two Exchange accounts you'll need to use IMAP or POP. Does that apply to me where I will eventually end up with three Exchange accounts in Outlook? If so and I have to use IMAP will the calendar and contacts sync for each of the email accounts?
Diane Poremsky says
That applies to Outlook 2007, which supports only one Exchange account. Outlook 2010 and up support multiple Exchange accounts so you can add them all using Autodiscover... unless you don't want/need calendar and contacts in an account, then imap is optional.
Far says
Hi Diane,
Until a couple of weeks ago two of my Hotmail accounts happily synced in MS Outlook 2010 / Windows 8. One of them stopped (with the same messages indicated in your article). Both seem to have been migrated. I deleted both accounts from MS Outlook 2010, uninstalled Hotmail connector but could not reload the first account that had stalled before. At first it kept asking for a Hotmail connector, but over the past week that seems to have resolved itself. However for the past fortnight the first account has kept asking for windows security verification (name and password in a popup window) and won't load. I changed settings to "allow POP/IMAP" and also tried manually entering the IMAP/SMTP settings but with no success. The first account loads on my phone app with no problems, just not on my PC with Outlook 2010. The second account hasn't had any problems at all. What would you suggest for resolving this? Thank you in advance.
Diane Poremsky says
Log into the account in a browser - verify it was migrated. Look in Account > Info, is the account marked Send only?
Is the problem account an outlook.com/hotmail/live address or a non-Microsoft address?
Far says
Yes both accounts (Hotmail) are migrated. The troublesome aAccount is not marked send only. The problem is with one of the Hotmail accounts, not both.
barun agarwal says
i am having the same problem wth outlook 2010. it just does not login
Diane Poremsky says
Any error messages? Do you have all updates installed? If the account was moved to the new server, you need to remove it from outlook and add it back using auto account setup so its added as an Exchange account - the outlook connector used in outlook 2010 no longer works.
Howard Kellner says
Hi Diane,
I have initiated a new Outlook account to get onto the Exchange server although when I want to share a calendar with an associate that has not been migrated I get the following message.
"We're currently upgrading Outlook.com accounts. During the upgrade you won't be able to share your calendar with some accounts, but you can still send a link to your calendar. We'll be done with the upgrade by the end of August 2016"
My question, do both Outlook accounts have to be on the Exchange server?
Thank you for your help.
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, both accounts need to be on the same server (either old or new) to share calendars.
Dale says
Hi Diane
Thanks for your generous help. I have been having fits getting my Outlook 2007 (12.0.6607.1000) to work with my hotmail account. I see at Outlook.com that I have been "migrated". I followed your instructions above and allowed an auto set up for the exchange account. Problem now is Outlook is stuck in an endless prompt for a password in the pop up window which says "Connect to outlook.Office360.com" I type the identical password that logs me in at outlook.com, check remember me and the same window appears again and again. At last count 7 times before I select cancel and then I get the message that the Microsoft Exchange Server 000118f8-2df6-0701-0000-000000000000@hotmail.com needs to check name, which is my hotmail e-mail address. What am I missing?
Diane Poremsky says
Do you have all Office updates installed? That looks like SP3 - you need updates updates from 2015 installed to use it with exchange.
David says
Hi Diane. I have a Windows Phone and read above that this is a "constraint" to the migration. Any sense as to when accounts utilized by Windows Phones will be migrated? As painful as it might be, I am actually thinking about creating a new account and starting all over just to avoid and skip the unknown waiting time. Thanks again for your help!
Diane Poremsky says
They are expected to be moved in June, if everything stays on schedule. As of about 6 weeks ago, everything was on schedule but i haven't had any updates since then.
David says
Thank you Diane. Based on the migration thus far, have there been any problems that would make it worth one's while to start with a fresh account on the new servers anyway? What would you recommend that I do? Thanks again.
Diane Poremsky says
I don't believe there are any serious problems that would require a new account, but if you are in a hurry to be moved and want a new address, make a new account.
Joanne says
Hi Diane, I set up an Outlook.com IMAP account which I use to Archive emails. I move old emails from my Outlook 2013 inbox into correlating folders in my Outlook.com Archive in my mailbox. This has been syncing perfectly with existing folders but it is not syncing newly created folders. I think we have been upgraded, my Outlook.com account says Outlook Email in the banner (and address is outlook.live.com/owa). In Account Settings in Outlook 2013 it still shows Type as IMAP/SMTP not Exchange. My concern is, should I remove the IMAP account and try to reinstall using Add New Account [will this interfere with my existing Outlook 2013 inbox account - as it's the same email address] or should I reinstall again as an IMAP account? Hope this makes sense. Many thanks
Diane Poremsky says
You shouldn't have a problem adding the account as Exchange while it's also in as IMAP - it might get confusing, but you can do it. If you remove the imap account, you'll lose anything that didn't sync up - so I'd create the folders in exchange and move the messages into that folder. If you are uploading mail to the server, I think using exchange will work better than imap.
Joanne says
Thanks Diane, would an option be to save the Outlook.com Archive folder in my 2013 mailbox as a .pst file, then delete the IMAP account and recreate Outlook.com with the .pst file?
Diane Poremsky says
If the account is setup as an Exchange account, you won't need the pst file (unless it contains mail not on the server), otherwise, yes.
Christine says
Thank you!!! I had just created a new outlook.com email and got the sync error with Outlook 2003 on Windows 7. You solved the problem. Haven't seen this solution anywhere else.
You are my hero.
Dave Ings says
Hi all,
The data corruption issue has been much discussed over in the outlook.com community support forums. It appears to be mostly a server side issue for those of us who encounter it. Randomly, your contacts will be duplicated or triplicated (sometimes including data corruption) on outlook.com and no amount of cleaning up followed by re-importing will fix it. The free tech support people are beyond useless with respect to getting MS to acknowledge and/or fix this.
After two months of fighting this I finally gave up this week. I switched from Mac Outlook 2016 to Mac Mail (still using my outlook.com address) which allows me to rely upon my contacts stored in iCloud.com. I have deleted all of my contacts in outlook.com and I'm hoping (beyond hope) that in a few months the problem will have been fixed and I can restore them and use Outlook 2016 again.
MS should be thoroughly embarrassed about this.
Dave Ings
Laocoon says
I've done something similar as a workaround after spending the last 9 weeks trying to get my contacts clean. Level 2 tech support at MSFT couldn't help, either, and is now unresponsive to my case. Very sad indeed.
Diane Poremsky says
Are you using Windows Outlook or Mac Outlook?
Bob says
Diane, it sounds like Dave was using "Mac Outlook 2016" as the client but what he is describing is the same server side issue I posted about here on March 11th and that you later reproduced, at least in part with the missing fields data corruption, and subsequently reported to MS. I posted in that thread yesterday asking if you could possibly get a fix ETA from MS.
Diane Poremsky says
Dave is but someone else said they had the same problems. :) I don't recall them giving an ETA but I've had a lot going on the last few months and may have missed it or forgotten. I will check on it.
Bob says
Thanks, Diane. What Dave has described for server data corruption (missing fields and duplicates, triplicates, or more of records) is just like what I have been seeing. Dave saw it with the Mac Outlook 2016 client, I saw it with the Windows Outlook 2010 and 2016 client, and you saw part of it (the missing fields) with the Windows Outlook 2013 and 2016 client. All signs right now point to a pretty serious Exchange server side issue that is not client specific. I understand that you are following up on this out of the goodness of your heart. I just don't understand why Microsoft proper isn't all over this as it seems like a major, fundamental issue. If you don't have reliable data what do you have?
Diane Poremsky says
I'll see if i can find out anything new about it. I don't think it's very widespread - so it's less likely to get much attention unless someone opens a support case, Which is unlikely since it's not affecting the business side.
Bob says
That's the thing I, as I mentioned at https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/outlookcom/outlook-com-migration-status/#comment-199203 - I question their statement about this not affecting the business accounts. If that is true then they should be able to see what's different about the two Exchange infrastructures and simply fix the code of the broken one. But if they truly are using the Office 360 infrastructure then there shouldn't be any difference to begin with. Exchange should be Exchange regardless of which cluster or data center it is housed.
Diane Poremsky says
They are using office 365 infrastructure - they have their own tenant but had to tweak it (even more severely than godaddy does) so each address is basically a subtenant and has no admin capability. There are a couple of contact bugs that moved over to the new servers, i believe they are outlook bugs as they are supposed to be fixed this month. I don't know if this bug will be fixed too - will test it when the update comes out.
Bob says
I ran the test again today (using a fully updated Outlook 2016) and it still results in the same sort of data corruption/record duplication. In this case I imported 629 records and *only* ended up with 844 records, in various states of completeness. I just figured I'd let you know, not that I plan on ever trusting them with my data.
Bob says
Diane: Out of curiosity, and because I still have people asking me about this service which I continue to tell them to stay far away from, I decided to try another MS account I have lying around. At first I thought maybe the corruption wasn't occurring, but after 8-10 minutes data started going missing from fields. Interestingly enough, I did not get any duplicates like I do with the other account and like what Dave reported. The record count stayed at 629, the original import count, which is akin to the symptom you reproduced. It seems like there are possibly two distinct issues, one that causes fields to be cleared, and another than seemingly randomly duplicates records in whatever state they may be (missing data or not). I apparently have one account that suffers from both and another account the only suffers from the former. Also, not that it should matter, but my first test account is on the outlook.com domain and the second I just tested with is on the live.com domain.
Dave Ings: Could you share the link(s) to the outlook.com community support forum posting(s) on this? I find it very difficult to find most anything on the MS community sites. I'm used to the TechNet and MSDN sites which seem to have better indexing. I'm guessing part of it has to do with the way some of the community content is written, but it would be nice for there to be better curation for indexing purposes.
Diane Poremsky says
>> Also, not that it should matter, but my first test account is on the outlook.com domain and the second I just tested with is on the live.com domain.
It only matters if they are on different servers. :)

Hi Diane,
I have an outlook.com account with a primary login as an email address from another account: sonic.net. For some reason outlook.com stopped bringing over emails from that account last Tuesday 4/19/2016 (4 days ago). I think it may have something to do with the Outlook.com account getting updated to the new Exchange server because the header of my Outlook.com mail site says "Outlook Mail".
My calendar and contacts in that account stopped synchronizing as well. I'm reluctant to delete my account in Outlook 2007 that syncs with this account and then re-sync because it seems like the new online account it is not working right.
What are the steps to synchronizing my Outlook 2007 and other devices do to Outlook.com (Outlook Mail, Calendar, People, etc...). My feeling is that once the on line account is working, I can sync to that account safely.
Maybe you've already answered this question, but I'm afraid if I delete the Outlook 2007 account I'll loose my calendar and contacts for good.
Thanks Diane,
Paul
Diane Poremsky says
Do you have an outlook.com alias on the MS account you use at outlook.com? You'll need an outlook.com address to log into it in Outlook 2007 - basically, create a new account in Outlook 2007 using autoaccount setup and the outlook.com alias - this will add the account on the new server. Compare the calendar & contacts and once you are sure thye are correct, delete the outlook connector account.
You could also export the calendar and contacts from the connector to a pst file too - this will give you a backup copy locally.

Perfect! Thank you!

Hi, I have now two accounts migrated to the new infrastructure. However, I'm facing the issue that when sharing a calendar the existing entries are not visible for the person I have shared the calendar with. Only new or updated entries are visible. That is really annoying. Anyone having a fix for that?
Diane Poremsky says
Really? That is odd. I'll try to repro.
Try this: add a second calendar folder, move some old items to it then move them back to the default calendar.
jeff says
actually it seems like that now a day later the entries are all there. i believe the second account was migrated only yesterday so maybe it was just a hickup?
Diane Poremsky says
Sounds like it was a hiccup. Depending on the size of your mailbox, it can task some time to migrate & I'm not sure exactly when they flip the switch to redirect you to the new server.
Chris says
Hi Diane, Thank you for all your useful information. Your site is by far the most informative and helpful site in the migration process.
With the old Outlook.com, you could set up your external email settings (in my case yahoo.com) by forwarding your external email to outlook.com and then set up outlook connected account with outgoing server SMTP settings ONLY. The new outlook.com requires BOTH incoming and outgoing settings to function, so I receive emails twice (once through forwarding and once through incoming server settings). If I cancel the forwarding from yahoo, I can receive emails only once, but the server doesn't push to outlook in real-time, there is a 15min-1hr delay, not feasible in our current world of email culture.
Diane Poremsky says
When you add the account, you can set it to move the mail into another folder. Not sure if it will only apply to the mail collected by the collected account or with the mail forwarded, but it's worth a try.
You can also try editing the incoming imap server name to mail after the account is set up. I'm testing it now - so far it's working but time will tell once outlook.com figures out its a bad address.
Chris says
Thank you. Yes, you can set up the settings to have incoming email move into another folder (these are the receive emails, not the forward emails). I will try to edit the incoming imap to see if that simply breaks the link as an alternative option. Thanks.
Steve Waycott says
Hi Diane. First, thanks for these instructions. I've search the web for a solution and this seems to be the only page with the answer to my issue. Only problem is, when I implement your directions I get an unexpected response. When I use the Auto Account Setup tool, and after I enter my name, email address and password, I get an error message saying "You cannot add a Microsoft Exchange account to this profile while Outlook is running. Exit Outlook and use the Mail icon in the Control Panel to add a Microsoft Exchange account." When I exit Outlook and use the Mail icon, I get the same error message. I am using Outlook 2007 and Windows 10.
Diane Poremsky says
It sounds like outlook.exe is still running. Open task manager and look for outlook.exe on the processes tab. If so, select it and end task.

Good Evening Diane,
I use hotmail and when I am at work I log on through the website and then today in the middle of sending an email my screen refreshed and gave me the Outlook mail configuration.
BUT at home I use Outlook to access my hotmail accounts (I have 2)...it seems when they turned on the new format my accounts stopped seeking to Outlook. I removed the accounts and tried to add again but to no avail.
Do you have any pointers or tips as I miss my Outlook view!
Thank you in advance.
Diane Poremsky says
What version of outlook do you use at home? If 2010 or 2007, you need current updates installed before you can use autoaccount setup to add it as an Exchange account.
Dale says
Hi Diane. first Thank You for helping with this issue. OK I have Outlook 2007 Ver. 12.0.4518.1014 on Win 7 Home Premium. I attempt to update Outlook to the latest version but get an error window which indicates: Updates for MS Office Outlook 2007 (KB2768023) 32-bit Edition...the expected version of the product was not found on the system.
When I tried to set up a new Exchange account to retrieve my hotmail I told me it could not connect to the server. As a workaround I set it up as an IMAP and I am now getting my mail into Outlook, however I have lost the functionality for Categorization that I had with the MAPI account. Can you help me figure out what has happened?
Diane Poremsky says
You need a bunch of updates installed - you aren't even at Sp3 level (12.0.6607.1000). Let Microsoft Update install all updates for Office 2007 then try again.

I have Outlook 2010 on my desktop computer and have used the Hotmail Connector to sync my Outlook desktop calendar to my iPhone (not my email, just calendar). I noticed about a week ago that calendar items I added on my iPhone were not syncing to my desktop and vice versa. As I researched today I found out about the Outlook.com migration and that the Hotmail Connector would no longer work so I figured that was probably my problem. I followed the reconfiguration instructions but all that seemed to do was delete my calendar from my desktop. Outlook.com and my iPhone still show my calendar and I think they are the same, but I don't know how to get my Outlook desktop calendar back or to sync it with my phone or Outlook.com. Can you help?
Diane Poremsky says
Was the account added to your Outlook as an Exchange account? If you added it as an IMAP account, you'll only get email - outlook 2010 (with all updates installed) will set the account up as an Exchange account.

Hi Diane, so in our family we have around 6 or 7 accounts that were setup using windows live admin center (custom domain), and we still haven't been migrated. I was wondering what the timeline for custom domains users are? Also, the outlook premium package only supports 5 accounts, if we switched to that to regain the ability to manage our accounts, I assume we would lose two addresses? Thanks for your help! :)
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, you would lose two addresses if you switched. Just having a custom domain won't prevent moving the accounts at anytime but other factors could affect it. Are you using windows phone or sharing calendars with each other? Either will cause a problem migrating... and those will be moved last.
Scott says
So what "features" will hold up an account migration? I don't have a shared Cal anymore and I have not been on a Window phone for 2 years... I do use Rules and have multiple Aliases. I do have Office 365 on this account as well.
I should have just removed my aliases, waited 30 days and made a new account with them. That would do the trick. I would only loose 1 allies that had to stay behind, and get locked for a year when I closed it.
Diane Poremsky says
Winphone and shared cal are the only ones I'm familiar with - i think the outlook connector/deltasync constraint was lifted. If you had shared calendars within the last 30 days, it's still a constraint. If you use the request link, does it say you can't be moved? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/outlookpreview/default.aspx
Scott says
Still waiting... this sucks. Everyone else in fame house (who could all care less) has migrated, but myself, tech save heavy Outlook.com, OneNote, OneDrive, 365 user, who has been following the migration since day one over a year ago? nope
Diane Poremsky says
It won't be long. Did you try the link to request an early move?
Bob says
I stopped using outlook.com due to mail loss. Will give it a try once I am migrated, but as of now still old outlook.com which I do not trust.
Ermanno says
My account is still on the old interface... I opened up a new one and it's already on Office365. I tried to request the change, but no luck until now... :-(
Diane Poremsky says
There are a number of constraints that will cause the accounts to be one of the last ones moved. :(
Ermanno Ferrari says
I just hope it is still going to be in 2016...:-(
Diane Poremsky says
I last asked about maybe it 2 weeks ago and they are still on target for late may/early June.

Thanks Diane, finger crossed. Hopefully it's going to happen before that...

Hi Dianne,
I am running Outlook 2010 on Windows 10 and cannot get my Hotmail account to work. It stopped synching 2-3 days ago, generating the error messages associated with conversion to Outlook Mail. Through a browser I verified that I have been converted over (banner says "Outlook Mail"). I removed the account from Outlook 2010, verified I am on a supported version of Outlook 2010 (114.0.7166.5000), and followed your instructions to auto setup the account back into Outlook 2010. Outlook 2010 auto account setup insists on configuring as IMAP using the Hotmail Connector instead. I tried deleting the Connector and adding the account, but got the pop up that I must install the Connector. With the Connector reinstalled, auto account setup configures as IMAP using the Connector, and then can't synch. Account works fine on my Android phone and through the browser interface. Any suggestions?
Diane Poremsky says
Give it a couple of days, and in the meantime, add it as an IMAP account. The server settings are in outlook.com's options - they should be the same as the settings for Outlook 2003 but with port 587 and SSL for the SMTP server.

Hi,
I have set up my hotmail per the instructions, https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Add-your-Outlook-com-account-to-Outlook-2010-6636e88f-3d21-413b-9fd1-38a99dfcb199?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US.
I'm using Outlook 2010 old version, an unsupported version (a version earlier than 14.0.7143.5000), so has to set up manually. It was running well after setting up accordingly.
Today, don't know what happen, my Outlook 2010 has problem and prompted me for password for my hotmail account, even I have put the correct password, the screen keep continuing prompted for password, and I cannot access to my email server.
Microsoft security has sent me the "Unusual sign-in activity" email to my other email, I got the secure code to activate it, I can access my hotmail through web mail (Outlook Mail), but my hotmail in Outlook still prompted me for password.
I removed my hotmail account in Outlook 2010, and created a new hotmail account as per the instruction as above, the problem still exist, which prompted me for password.
Note: I marked "Remember password" when created my hotmail account in Outlook 2010. And marked "Save this password in your password list" when the screen promted for password. I confirmed my password is correct because I can access my hotmail in the web mail (Outlook Mail).
I tried to created the hotmail account in Thunderbird, but cannot to my hotmail either. Do you think if Microsoft has blocked my hotmail access ?
Please help me how to resolve this problem.
Diane Poremsky says
Did you set the account up as POP3 or IMAP? Do you know when the account was moved to the new server? It could be a transient error that goes away on its own.
Is there a reason why you didn't install the update so you can add the account as Exchange?
AS Ooi says
Hi Diane, thanks for looking into my question. I have set the account as IMAP. I set up the account after finding the new email never come into my Outlook anymore, that was around 1 month plus ago. It was running well when I created as per the instruction around 1 month plus ago, https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Add-your-Outlook-com-account-to-Outlook-2010-6636e88f-3d21-413b-9fd1-38a99dfcb199?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US.
Just yesterday, the problem occurred. Outlook keep prompted me for password.
I prefer to keep my Outlook as its original version that's why I never update it.
As long as I open my Outlook, it keep prompted me for password ? And, my new email from hotmail account never come to Outlook anymore. Please help how to resolve this.
Diane Poremsky says
You really should update for security reasons - unpatched exploits leave you vulnerable.
Anyway, because it worked for a while and now doesn't it's there is a good chance it's just a transient error - give another 24 hours. Reboot if you haven't since the problem started.
AS Ooi says
Hi Diane, thank you ! I never open the Outlook for 24 hours. I changed to use the Thunderbird and set up my Hotmail. It works well so far.
I will try by using back my Outlook later.
Diane Poremsky says
if you want a "not Outlook" mail client that looks kinda like Outlook and syncs calendar and contacts with outlook.com (or gmail), try eM Client.
Michael Nagel says
I have the very same problem. Outlook2010 connected to Outlook.com on EWS server also prompts me for the password. When you delete the exchange account and try to reinstall it, it says pls. install the outlook connector, which seems very funny. I think one of the login servers are down. The problem is since Friday. I have it on all my three Windows 7 PCs running Outlook2010 resp. Outlook2007. It was working nicely for a couple of weeks after the platform transition of Outllook.com.I don't hope they reversed the transition. May be they are so busy with BUILD in San Francisco that they forgot to manage their network infrastructure.

I decided to give one of my recently migrated outlook.com accounts a serious test run. Using Outlook 2010 I imported various folder contents from a PST to the newly minted Exchange mailbox. Tasks, Notes, and Calendar records seem to be fine. However, Contacts records continually get corrupted on the server side. Initially all the records appear as expected, with the server folder sync completing, but then after a short while (minutes) existing records start to have data go missing, like an email address or the notes, and new records are created that are duplicates and sometimes even triplicates of existing records, although usually at least one piece of data is missing. It's a huge mess and in my limited forensic investigation I haven't been able to find a pattern, but I am fairly certain that at least initially all the data is complete until the server decides to send back garbage. I say this because the correct number of records are synced up to the server and I can successfully perform a search for known given records that later cannot be found due to things like a company name being lost. I've tried deleting all Contacts, emptying the Deleted Items, and doing either a fresh import or a manual copy of the contacts, but the same corruption occurs. There seems to be something seriously wrong with the Exchange mailbox and it really makes me question how safe a user's data will be with this new, free, hosted offering. Most of my past Exchange experiences come from in-house servers that I have been able to control and trust, although I do have access to one Office 365 account that has been relatively pain free. I would never have imagined that the platform underpinning Office 365 would be this unreliable! So much for that whole cloud computing argument. What's worse, calling MS support results in being ping-ponged from one support group to another as no one seems to know who owns this new hybrid. The desktop group wants you to talk to the web group and the web group wants you to call pro support, and none of them really seemed to be aware of the setup. Pro support actually knows about the product but wants you to call another commercial group for assistance on said free product. I have one more phone call to make when the given department is open, but I am not optimistic at this point. MS gets a big fat F from me on this one.
Diane Poremsky says
Are contacts you create in the new account corrupted? (at least) One other person has a problem with contacts in outlook.com. His problem is with the migrated contacts tho, not imported.
Bob says
Before I ever did any sort of importing I created one new contact in the Outlook.com account using the Outlook 2010 desktop app on Windows 7 (Office Pro Plus). That single contact never got corrupted over the course of the few days that it sat there. During this time I was testing to see how things appeared in the web interface in various browsers (desktop and mobile) along with Gmail EAS on an Android 6 device. I know, all pretty standard stuff, but I wanted to make sure it worked the same way as Office 365 does. When it finally came time for me to import real data I deleted the single test contact so that it wouldn't get mixed in with real data and I even disconnected the Android Gmail EAS client because I didn't want that in the mix for other reasons. The account did not have any migrated contacts that came over from the old web mail platform because the account had never been used for such things. I think a few test emails had been sent from it and promptly deleted years ago and that was it for the old platform. Hopefully I am answering your question. If not, let me know and I'll try again.
I should also note that I have reproduced this apparent server side corruption in a number of ways, in all cases starting fresh with an empty Contacts folder on the server mailbox and local OST file (all folders updated). In one test I manually copied over only two contacts records. One record seemed to remain unscathed while the other lost the company name and some other pieces of data. In another case I tried importing from a CSV file exported from the source PST, instead of importing or copying directly from the source PST. The end result was the same with the corruption appearing, again shortly after the server folder was fully updated supposedly successfully.
So far I have been unable to get any significant support from MS, not even an acknowledgement of the issue so that I know they are looking into it. The free Outlook.com web chat representatives, who I am told are the only ones that can provide support on this, are useless. Depending on who you chat with they may not even know that their service now functions as an Exchange mailbox. I am beyond frustrated with this. And even if they do fix it, the thought of relying on them to not corrupt my data sometime down the road makes me very nervous.
Diane Poremsky says
I'll see what I can find out from the product team. They definitely shouldn't be getting messed up.
Bob says
Hi Diane. Is there any word if MS at least acknowledges this specific issue, let alone plans on fixing it? Just so you are aware, I fired up Outlook 2016 today and ran through the test again. The same sort of corruption occurred. Even though this is a free hosted Exchange offering from MS I don't understand how they can let this serious data corruption issue languish. It certainly doesn't help build confidence in the Office 365 platform in general.
Diane Poremsky says
They are looking into the missing fields problem. It only affected Outlook.com, not the business accounts and I'm not sure why/what they are doing to cause it - and I doubt they will tell me much about the cause once it's fixed.
Bob says
As of today this issue(s) still exists. Is there any chance of getting a fix ETA from MS? And just to be clear, the nature of the data corruption I am seeing is multifaceted in the sense that not only are fields missing data but the record count balloons with duplicates that also have missing data. For example, importing 627 contact records in to a clean, empty Contacts folder results in a whopping 2498 contact records once the Outlook.com Exchange server spits back its folder update. There doesn't seem to be an apparent pattern as some records may get duplicated two or three times while others may get duplicated as many as eight times. Meanwhile, some other records don't get duplicated at all and may or may not have missing data. It's really all over the map, but much more corrupted than not. I am at a loss for how MS let this go live in the first place and why they are not falling over themselves to fix it now. I also question their statement about this not affecting the business accounts. If that is true then they should be able to see what's different about the two Exchange infrastructures and simply fix the code of the broken one. But if they truly are using the Office 360 infrastructure then there shouldn't be any difference to begin with. Exchange should be Exchange regardless of which cluster or data center it is housed! This does not inspire confidence in MS hosted services and I will definitely not be recommending them now or any time in the foreseeable future.
Diane Poremsky says
Oh, one other thing, are you syncing contacts with the android? If so, turn off the sync and see if they get corrupted.
Bob says
No. I took the Android Gmail EAS connection out of the mix prior to importing the real data and have not connected it since. Sorry if I hadn't made that clear in my least message. Ultimately I do want to bring it back online, but one step at a time as they say. Right now everything in the chain is native MS software.
Diane Poremsky says
I have a question in to the product team. We'll see what they have to say.
Bob says
Hi Diane. Any luck with the MS product team? I just ran the test again today and it's still corrupting Contacts data.
Diane Poremsky says
Nothing yet. They are looking into some issues.
Diane Poremsky says
I reproed this today - the company name field was deleted as i watched. I tested it the mailbox open in both outlook 2013 and 2016 and the company name disappeared during the sync. I didn't test with other fields - but i sent my support contact a video showing what was happening and your comments.
Bob says
Thanks Diane. A day or two ago I replied (still waiting to be moderated) to your comment time stamped March 16, 2016 1:02 am, but had not seen this more recent comment from you because 1. I am not getting thread subscription emails even though I have confirmed as such when the sub conf email asks me to do so; 2. In my periodic manual scans of this page to see if there is a new comment I must have missed yours being inserted mid-list. Anyway, as I mentioned, I too have reproduced the corruption with Outlook 2016 (great minds think alike), so both of us have confirmed it's not isolated to older versions of Outlook. The one thing I should stress is that not only does assorted data go missing from original records, but duplicates and triplicates in various corrupted forms also get created. For example, in one session I may start with 630 original records fully synced up to the server. Then the server sends down a re-sync and suddenly I end up with 1000+ records. Each time I run the test, fresh with all Contact items deleted to begin with, the total number of duplicates changes even if the original import count is the same. It is so bizarre!
Diane Poremsky says
The only time I've seen duplicates are occasionally when i sync to you iphone. They are looking into the missing data problem. I forget, is your account in Outlook as exchange or as ActiveSync?
Bob says
The Outlook.com account is straight Exchange, not the old Outlook.com webmail with EAS support. Also, I am currently not connecting any EAS clients to the account, for the sake of keeping the testing simple.
Mike says
I am wondering if you could help me set up outlook 2016 using a custom domain. I first use an alias so it finds the server, then I put in my sign in info. Once I used the alias for the user name and password, and once I used the custom domain for the user name. Either way, I keep getting "the action cannot be completed. the name cannot be matched to a name in the address book" when it restarts.
What am I doing wrong?
Diane Poremsky says
Was the custom domain account migrated to the new server? If it was not migrated over properly, you'll have problems using it as an Exchange or ActiveSync account. It might work ok as pop3 or imap because you can change the from address.
Mike says
Yes, to the best of my knowledge the custom domain was migrated correctly. Is there anything I need to do differently to set up the custom domain as an exchange account?
Diane Poremsky says
Nope, you just need to use auto account setup to add the account to outlook (if using Outlook 2007/2010, make sure all outlook updates are installed).
Are only the older/import contacts getting corrupted? I know there were some issues with field mapping between the old outlook.com and Outlook, but the data should be there, only in the wrong fields.
Mike says
When I change it to an alias, the auto loader finds it perfectly. However, when using jenn@(custom).org I think it is searching the custom domain for the login info so it won't set up correctly. I really want to keep my login credentials as the custom domain, but it won't set up properly.
Is this always the case?
Diane Poremsky says
Is this an old, grandfathered custom domain? If so, do you have autodiscover records set up?
With the accounts on the new server and the inability to tell Outlook where to look for the account, you can set the address to log on, but outlook doesn't handle it correctly.
BTW, you could try the autodiscover xml at https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/exchange-account-set-up-missing-in-outlook-2016/ - ise outlook.com as the domain.
John says
I've been using outlook.com since it was launched and I still haven't been migrated over! This is so frustrating! VERY slow migration process. There should have been an option for people to OPT-IN if they wanted to migrate now or later.
Diane Poremsky says
Since it's early March, it shouldn't be too much longer. They were originally going to allow requests but discovered issues ('constraints') that prevented them from moving some accounts and didn't want to have people sign up then not be able to move them right away. The list of constraints keeps changing as they solve one problem and discover another but one I am aware of is or use using the outlook connector or windows live mail to sync.

Hello Dianne. I have twice posted a question in this comments section regarding this article but my comment has not been added. Is there some issue with my comment? If it needs to be reworded in some way I am happy to do so.
Please advise.

Hi Diane, I was hoping you could help me out. I have a custom domain that I use for email with outlook.com and have just been moved to the new server. I can't figure out how to make it work. I try with the email, and it does not find it automatically. Then, I tried adding manually, but can't find the right server.
Also, I saw something up above about adding an alias... but the sentence cuts out and doesn't really explain how to go about doing it. So I am wondering, do I just create an alias, then have it automatically find the account using that? I really don't want to change my sing-in information to an alias just to keep using my email.
Also, can I set up outlook.com as an exchange account on my phone now as well?
Diane Poremsky says
> Also, can I set up outlook.com as an exchange account on my phone now as well?
YEs, if you can set it up on Outlook as Exchange, you can set it up on the phone as exchange. Depending on the app, it will use EWS instead of ActiveSync, which is a little more robust.
You can add an outlook.com alias to the account in outlook.com - https://account.live.com/names/Manage - this will allow you to set the account up in Outlook. But to send using the custom domain you'll need to set it up as EAS (use m.hotmail.com or eas.outlook.com as the server), pop3 or imap. After you configure the account, send a test message so you can see if it uses the right address in the display name and reply to.
How long ago did they move your account?
Diane Poremsky says
I just tested it using my custom domain they messed up (it's default address is outlook_a-big-GUID@outlook.com now) - i can't send mail using the custom address - it goes as from the ugly address on behalf of my custom domain address. I can send mail from the outlook.com alias I added as long as i select it from the From dropdown.
Chris says
Has this issue been solved yet by Microsoft? My email (when sent via my alias) sends with the long GUID@outlook.com. I can't figure out how to make outlook send via Exchange with my yahoo.com alias.
Diane Poremsky says
it's on the new server? If you add the yahoo account as a send and receive account, you can send using it by typing the address in the from field. You may need to add an outlook.com alias account to the profile so you can add the account to outlook.
Chris says
Yes, my account has migrated onto the new server. Now all meeting invites and email reply and forwards are all sending from the long GUID@outlook.com email name. I have an outlook.com alias also in my profile. Still all emails and meeting invites from all aliases are going with the same GUID email address.
Diane Poremsky says
I was able to get rid of the ugly address by setting the alias as the default in View Account, Your Info, but all meetings go from that address - new mail, replies and forwards should work with the other addresses as long as you have outside addresses set up as a connected account. I'm trying to figure out if we can make it work with connected accounts as Outlook 2016 now lists them in the From selector but haven't had much luck yet - it's a slow process as you can't change the default address in My Info more than once a week. :(

Hi Diane,
I have a number of outlook.com accounts setup using a few different custom domain names.
All the accounts have been working really well and accessed through Outlook 365 (2016) for over a year.
Now the two accounts on one of the domains have been upgraded to the new Outlook.com. I know this because the web interface has changed to the new version and I can see that within Outlook both accounts are pointing to the eas.outlook.com server.
Question: How do I set/edit the Outgoing SMTP server information for the send-only accounts? In the old Outlook.com this is accessed via Options > Your email accounts > Details (on the send-only account). I cannot see new/equivalent settings in the new Outlook.com.
Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?
Diane Poremsky says
Oh, so you just need the server settings? I guess i misread it the first time i looked at the question and thought you were having problems making it work. Sorry about that.
The server names are in outlook.com at gear > options > mail > accounts > pop and imap. I also have the smtp server configuration in the outlook 2003 configuration section on this page.
Server name: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Port: 587
Encryption method: TLS

I'm guessing your account was migrated to the new server and no longer supports DeltaSync (the outlook connector uses that to sync). The new server is an exchange server - you remove the account from outlook and let auto account setup add it back.
To verify it was moved over, log in to the account using a browser - does it look different? If you rarely used outlook.com website and don't know what it looked like, does it say "Outlook Mail" in the banner over the inbox? If so, the account is on Exchange. You can also tell by looking at the web address - the new server uses outlook.live.com (old address is mail.live.com)
Bradavon says
"A small subset of Outlook 2010, 2007, and Outlook 2003 users received letters in early November 2015 that said the user would be migrated soon."
I got this email, as did my Dad (I think Mum too) way back in November 2015. The email even said "over the coming weeks".
Two months later we're still waiting, two months isn't the coming weeks.
Any idea what happened? Thanks
Diane Poremsky says
Apparently something in the account prevented it from being moved at that time.
Sundancer245 says
Diane, I have followed all the tips given here and still cannot get my migrated Hotmail account to work in outlook 2010 on my windows 10 x64 computer. The other non upgraded accounts still work fine including the pop3 account. Where do I go from here, I am afraid of loosing all of my Hotmail and Outlook accounts when the migration completes and would like to get this resolved soon. Thanks, Ed
Diane Poremsky says
What happens when you try to set it up using auto-account setup? Do you have all Outlook updates installed?
David says
Hi Diane. When the migration is complete, will the functionality of e-mail, contacts and calendar in an Outlook.com account in Outlook 2013/2016 be EXACTLY the same as the corresponding functionality that I have with my work Office 365 for Business (Exchange Online) account in Outlook 2013/2016? If not, what will be different? Thank you!!
Diane Poremsky says
Yes, it will be the same. the only difference will be no global address book or other purely business features.
John says
Hi Diane, I've been able to use Outlook 2003 after making changes. One thing I've noticed is that when I delete messages, they are no longer moved to and stored in the "Deleted" folder. Is there any way of accumulating deleted messages in the "Deleted" folder. I appreciate your wise counsel
Diane Poremsky says
You have it set up as IMAP? The deleted items should go in the deleted folder in the pst file, not the imap's deleted folder.

Hi Diane, Thank you for the valuable information. I'm trying to sync my hotmail account with my desktop Outlook 2007. I recently upgraded to Windows 10. My hotmail account stopped syncing with Outlook connector about a month ago so I guess my account was migrated. I removed the hotmail account as instructed but when I go to add it back in as a new account I get the message:
"You cannot add a Microsoft Exchange account to this profile while Outlook is running. Exit Outlook and use the Mail icon in the Control Panel to add a Microsoft Exchange account."
This is where I get lost. I don't have a "Mail Icon" in my Control Panel, at least now that it's Windows 10. I tried going through Windows 10's "Settings" but got lost. My hotmail account address appears in Settings as it was required when upgrading to Windows 10 but how to get it into Outlook is my question. I'm no techie so step by step would be helpful.
Thanks!
Diane Poremsky says
Right click on the start menu, choose control panel. In the search field in the upper right, type 'mail' - that should find it.

Hi Diane, quick question, when you say that all Outlook.com accounts will be migrated to Ofice 365 during 2016, does this mean that Outlook.com will no longer be a free service from that date? I am asking because it seems that there are no free subscriptions of Office 365...
Please help,
Thanks,
Daniel.
Diane Poremsky says
Outlook.com remains free - its just going to be hosted on office 365 servers. They had the paid ad-free version but that is optional for users.

After setting up imap email account and now using Outlook with changes for several days, I am able to receive and send emails (have to use port 25), but I am frequently getting error 0x800ccc0e " ... unable to download folder (null) from the IMAP email server...". I have to close Outlook 2003 and re-open it to get everything to work again. Also, I sometimes have to close and open Outlook because headers were not downloaded. Hi Diane,
I was forwarded this forum by a Microsoft forum in response to my problems getting my Microsoft accounts to work with Outlook 2007 running on Win 10 (build 10586.36) post-migration, NB I have all the latest Outlook 2007 updates installed.
I have a 3 MS accounts with domain names: hotmail.com, live.com and outlook.com of which only the hotmail.com now works with Outlook Connector - presumably it is only a matter of time this stops working.
POP protocol is activated in all three accounts - however, the accounts are not set-up automatically by Outlook 2007 and manual set-up does not work for either POP or IMAP using (where xxx is either POP or IMAP):
xxx-mail.outlook.com / smpt-mail.outlook.com for the outlook.com account or
xxx-mail.live.com / smpt-mail.live.com for the live.com account
No matter what combination of settings I use I get the following messages from Outlook 2007:
Log onto incoming mail server (IMAP): the connection to the server failed (or POP as the case may be)
Send test e-mail message: Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP e-mail server.
If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP)
I note the comments on ports 993, 587 or 25 being blocked by my ISP, but as other email addresses I use work using these ports, I assume that they are not blocked. Beyond this I can't see anything else in this discussion that I have not tried, but any other suggestions as to what I could be doing wrong or possible solutions would be gratefully received.
I've used these email addresses with for more than 10 years with both Outlook 2003 and 2007 and would regret having to change, but unless I find a solution to these problems quickly I will be forced to abandon Microsoft email in favour of one of the alternatives
Diane Poremsky says
That means it's the only account not yet migrated, and yes, it's only a matter of time.
Do you have an exchange account in your profile? If not, use autoaccount setup to add the main outlook.com account to your profile as Exchange. The remaining outlook.com accounts will need to be set up manually as Outlook 2007 only supports one exchange account in the profile.
Are you using your full email address as the username? Do you have multi-factor authentication enabled? (This is where you get a text message with a code to log in.) If so, you need to use the app password.
John says
Hi Diane...As I mentioned in earlier posts, my ISP is CenturyLink. I was unable to send e-mails using port 25. I changed to port 587 and was then able to send e-mails. However, that has stopped working. No longer able to send e-mails. Reported error "(0x80CCC0E)". I use Microsoft Outlook 2003.
Diane Poremsky says
You have use SSL checked? Is it still not working? Before my Christmas break, my contact mentioned that SSL on 25 and 587 might be temporary and users would need to upgrade Outlook or use another client. But... 587/SSL on smtp-mail.outlook.com (and outgoing auth enabled on the outgoing tab) is still working here, so it wasn't disabled yet.
John says
Hi Diane...I changed the port back from 587 to 25 and now it seems to work. Thank you.

I have re-installed the hotmail connector multiple times, created multiple profiles, and deleted and added my e-mail account multiple times. I have been unable to get Outlook07 to work with my hotmail account any more. the Win10 upgrade was also performed around the time of the loss of hotmail access from Outlook.

Hi Diane,
Came across this article while researching for a client. I understand why everything happened and what to do to resolve it. However here is my dilemma. When using the Auto Account Setup to re-connect, (my outlook.com username is personal_email@comcast.net. So when searching for server settings it is configuring an email account for Comcast.net not for my Outlook Mail account.
I am solely using this account for calendar synchronization across my devices. Hence it is working on mobile devices just not Outlook 2010.
Can I manually create the mail account in Outlook or force to Auto Account setup to look at Outlook.com 1st instead of Comcast.net?
Thanks
Diane Poremsky says
For right now, go into Outlook.com and add an Outlook.com alias - use that to set up the account in outlook. They tell me they are working on a solution so aliases won't be needed, but until that is ready, the alias method will work.
Kevin Brown says
Worked perfect, thanks.
Dave says
Hi Diane.
I found your site after I got the email in November from Microsoft about the migration.
Thank you for all the information - very usefull.
I have several accounts created using an old live.com custom domain and in preparation I was wondering if I need an autodiscover record in my DNS records for the accounts to be re-set in Outlook after the migration.
I use Outlook 2013 and 2010.
Diane Poremsky says
As of right now, no you don't need to add an autodiscover record.

Trying again... hope this goes through and helps someone else
I wrestled with Outlook 2010 for a couple weeks and tried everything talked about here with no luck. I have 2 hotmail accounts; 1 of them stopped working on both my desktop and laptop on about Nov 20, 2015. After trying several dozen different things, I discovered https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/ and noticed I could successfully connect through IMAP (I did acquire success with exchange but Windows Security window kept asking for password in a continuous loop so I gave up )... anyways, I went to Outlook-File-Account Settings-New, select Email, then Next, then at bottom select Manually configure server settings...Next...select (top) Internet Email...Next...Your name , email address. Account Type "IMAP", Incoming mail server="imap.outlook.com", Outgoing mail server= smtp-mail.outlook.com, Username your email address, password, then click More settings (lower right side), click advanced. Incoming server use "993", then under Use following type of encryption select "SSL", outgoing server "25", Use blah blah encryption connection "TLS" Next.. finally after infinite # of hours I got this account back and still use connector for other ok... hope this works for someone else all the best! :)
Diane Poremsky says
If you have all updates installed, both Outlook 2010 and 2007 should connect as an Exchange account (use auto account setup). This will allow calendar and contacts to sync. If you aren't using Outlook.com for calendars and contacts, POP3 or IMAP works fine. Outlook 2010 and 2007 can use TLS and port 587 with the outgoing server.
Martin Higgs says
I have tried the Microsoft URL, but nothing works as I suspect I am not inputting the correct domainuser name (UPN) - what is this and where do I find it and is it the password of this of the email account that I need to use? Thanks in advance for any feedback you can give.
Diane Poremsky says
Which version of outlook are you using? What type of account did you configure? It's better to use auto account setup to configure the migrated account. If you try to set exchange up manually, it might work using outlook.office365.com as the server name.
John Hasskamp says
Hi Diane, I currently use Outlook 2003 on Windows 7. On 12.4.2015 Outlook stopped working and I received the error messages that you describe in your article. Like others who have responded, I must have missed the e-mail from Microsoft. Fortunately, I found your helpful article. I followed the instructions. A new mail folder in Outlook was created: "imap-mail.outlook.com" Messages migrated from "Personal Folders" to the "imap-mail.outlook.com" folder. While I am receiving messages, I have been unable to send messages. I receive the following error message:
Task 'imap-mail.outlook.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC7D) : 'Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections. If SSL-secured connections have worked in the past, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
When I attempt to respond to an e-mail, the message shows up in the "Personal Folders" outbox, not the "imap-mail.outlook.com" folder. Moving from one folder to the other and resending does not work.
Have I done something wrong? Is there any easy fix so that I can begin sending messages? Also, is there any way of speeding up the process? Moving items, deleting, items, etc. is very slow. The desktop alert no longer seems to work either.
I respect your knowledge and appreciate your help. Many thanks.
Diane Poremsky says
The outgoing server is smtp-mail.outlook.com. Make that change and it should work. :)
Sent messages will go into the personal folders (or default data file's) Outbox and are moved to the Sent Items folder in that data file. It's how it works in Outlook 2003.
John Hasskamp says
Diane, I'm not sure I understand. The outgoing mail server is currently set up as "smtp-mail.outlook.com".
Diane Poremsky says
I was going by this: Task 'imap-mail.outlook.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC7D). It looks like that was used for the SMTP but I guess outlook is using the incoming server name as the account name.
The domain shouldn't matter.
Who is your ISP? My best guess right now is that the isp is blocking 25, but i can't verify because my isp doesn't block it.
Rick says
Same problem and error message I have been experiencing with msn email account using Outlook 2003. My internet provider is Centurylink. I tried some other ports for outgoing mail without success. Is there anything else to try?
Diane Poremsky says
Did you try 587? My contact in outlook.com support said to try it (apparently they just recently turned that port on***) - that looks like it working now. (It didn't work 2 weeks ago.)
***This is what I hate most about this long migration - as they migrate people (and get complaints), they change things. First SMTP didn't work in 2003, then it only worked on 25/ssl. I wish they had done this from the start. grrr.
Rick says
Just tried port 587 with no luck. I also turned off Kaspersky. I read a lot more emails than I send so I am great full that you have provided information to at least receive emails. I was thinking about purchasing outlook 2007 but am I right to assume that I would likely have the same issue of not being able to send emails like the problem I am having with Outlook 2003? Looking forward to a solution some day. Thanks for your help.
Diane Poremsky says
if you can find outlook 2007, it will work with the new outlook.com (as exchange account) provided you install all updates. It *should* work fine with pop or imap, but i won't make promises since 2003 should work too.
ho is your isp? I'm wondering if they block port 25 (but port 587/SSL should work - it did here when i tried today.)
Rick says
Centurylink. I was thinking of trying using wifi at a friend's home to see if I could send from there as a test on ports being blocked.
Diane Poremsky says
It looks like they are filtering 25 - https://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/email-troubleshooting-port25.html - but 587/SSL should work using SMTP-MAIL.outlook.com
Rick says
Thanks Diane for the information. I have tried 587 again using SMTP-MAIL.outlook.com and I still could not send email. Same error message. I also turned off Kaspersky and that didn't help. My friend has Comcast and I will report back if I was able to send from his house.
Diane Poremsky says
I have 2 people using CenturyLink that are having problems... i suspect they are blocking something. It's odd though, 587 isn't usually blocked.
Rick says
News! I just tried sending Outlook 2003 outgoing emails using my laptop at home which uses Windows10 and port 587(Centurylink connection) and the emails went through!!! I did have to turn off Kaspersky from scanning Outlook. I still can't use Outlook 2003 to send emails on my desktop computer which uses Windows 7. So the plot thickens. In my case Windows 7 seems to be interfering with being able to send emails even though I set email account up the same as I did on my laptop. I am reluctant to upgrade my desktop to Windows 10 because my wife really does not like changes when it comes computer applications. Just wanted to share this news and to ask if there is something I can change for my desktop to be able to send emails using Outlook 2003.
Diane Poremsky says
Same firewall? Try removing the account and adding it back.
Upgrading to fix problems usually doesn't fix them and when it does, it's not because of the new software directly but a setting that changed during the upgrade.
John says
Did online chat with CenturyLink. They said they could remove the filter from 25. When I inquired whether it was better to use unfiltered 25 or 587, they commented 587. Not sure why, but I will go with that.
Diane Poremsky says
Correct, 587 is recommended.
Rick says
I contacted Centurylink and had them turn on port 25. That did the trick so that I can send emails. When I try port 587 I get the same old error message about outgoing server does not support ssl. I have Windows 7 and Outlook 2003 with Centurylink. I have no idea why John (above) with same set up is able to use port 587. Now I am wondering what is the issue for 587 for me. I cleared ssl cache which was one recommendation. I have turned off Kaspersky. (1)Anyone have any ideas to try regarding port 587 error? (2). How much of a risk am I taking to use port 25? ( note - port 25 works with Kaspersky enabled)
Diane Poremsky says
port 25 is no risk to you. A lot of spammers drop their spam packages on a computer and use port 25 to send so isps block 25 to outside servers to reduce spam. This way you can only use port 25 to the isp's smtp server and the messages will get filtered out or get the attention of the support staff.
Rick says
Thanks Diane . Looks like after way too many hours working on this,
I am now good to go - or to at least send :).
Rick says
Yes, same firewall, but I actually also tried turning off Kaspersky on both machines while I tested sending mail. Rather than Windows 7 being the issue, it appears you are thinking that there is some other issue with the desktop computer that prevents outgoing mail from sending. I have tried several times removing email account and adding the account back without success. Thanks for the heads up on upgrading not likely fixing the problem.
Diane Poremsky says
Are you authenticating with the outgoing server? That is a requirement.
John Hasskamp says
I changed from 25 to 587 and now it seems to work. Is this temporary? Will I want to change it back to 25 at some point? Many thanks!
Diane Poremsky says
I understand it will remained enabled going forward. They enabled 587 when they discovered ISP blocked 25, even with SSL enabled.
John Hasskamp says
My ISP provider is CenturyLink. I called them, but they were unable to help. Thank you!
Diane Poremsky says
You tried both 35/SSL and 587/SSL? It looks like Centurylink is blocking port 25 and might be blocking 587.
Paul Colorado says
Diane, Thanks so much for your informative article. It is one of the very few articles I found on the problems this is causing. I run Outlook 2007 on Windows 10, and about a week ago I started getting the dreaded 3219 error message and my Outlook stopped working. I use(d) Outlook for my primary mail accounts, one being a hotmail account and one being an MSN account. After reading your article, I deleted both accounts from Outlook, and removed Outlook connector via my control panel. My Outlook requires that I add new accounts through the control panel, so I added back in my Hotmail, but as your article suggests, it will no longer let me add my similar MSN account. My attempt to add the MSN account as a POP3 has also failed. Is it true that I can no longer access both my Hotmail and MSN accounts through Outlook, or am I just missing something? I am not very tech savy. Your article mentions that I w8ill need to add another profile or upgrade to a different version of Outlook. Could you please explaine adding a second profile? I just want to open Outlook and access my different accounts from one screen like I used to be able to. Thanks for all your help.
Paul
Diane Poremsky says
Outlook 2007 only supports one Exchange account but there is no reason the second one wouldn't work using IMAP or POP3. Did you verify that POP3 was enabled in Outlook.com's options? Log into Ouitlook.com, click the Gear icon then Options - look for POP & IMAP along the left side.
I'd try using IMAP or POP3 for the second account, it's easier than a second profile if you don't need calendar and contacts to sync. You'd create the second profile in control panel, Mail, Profiles and would need to close and reopen Outlook to switch profiles.
How to switch profiles: https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/how-to-start-outlook-with-a-particular-profile/
Create a new profile - https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/how-to-create-a-new-profile/ - you'd need just step 1 - 5.

Diane, perhaps to avoid even more confusion, the very first line might read "I know everyone is anxious for their Outlook.com account to migrate to *Outlook Mail* …

Thanks for catching that. It was supposed to say 'to office 365'. Darn fingers move faster than my brain at times. :)

Diane,
Any news on the old live.com custom domains and Outlook 2010 issue? Some addresses in my domain have been migrated while others have not. Those that have can not use Outlook 2010. Hours of time with MS support failed to reveal what I found here tonight.
Also, I've been told the native iOS mail will not work. Any tips here?
Diane Poremsky says
No, nothing new. I was told they identified the problem connecting to Outlook and are working on it. Is it the domain in the address you used here? If so, I'll have my contact in support look into it.
The Outlook app on ios works because it uses EWS - the native apps use ActiveSync.
Janet says
Hi Diane and thank you for your prompt reply. I'm not very savvy with Outlook. How can I add a .pst file that will give me a place to put my mail until my mail account is re-added [per Microsoft instructions]. I don't want to lose all my files etc. I am on Outlook 2010. What is the easiest and best way to do this?
Also, how will I get everything 'back to normal' once I re-add my account. Thanks.
Diane Poremsky says
If you are using Outlook 2010, you won't need to put your mail anywhere - it's all on the server. You just need to add the exchange account to your profile and remove the connector account. If you add the exchange account first, you won't need a pst file - but to add a pst file, switch to the Data Files tab and click Add. Click Ok, type a name then click OK again - or you can be lazy and just click ok. Click Set as default then remove the connector account and use auto account setup to add the account as an exchange account.
Rick H says
After having tried for several days to get OutLook 2010 to recognize my Email account I finally got it working quite by accident. When Creating "New Email Account" Input the Email address in both "Your Name" and "Email" Fields. Then input your password in the password fields. One thing to take note of, if you use the Microsoft Account Validator, then you must use the Validation Password which you used when you first setup the MS Validator instead of your regular password. When you click the Next button, it'll find and validate your account, then ask you to restart OutLook after which the UAC for your Email will popup asking for your Email Password. After this everything should work. The Exchange server address it used was "office.office365.com" When I tried a ping or a tracert command on the IMAP or SMTP addresses in a command window, I found that they were timing out completely.
Diane Poremsky says
Correct, if you enabled a two-factor password option, you'll need to use an "app password", not your normal password.
Rick H says
I was already using the Verification Password from the start. :)
The accident I referred to which enable me to add my account successfully was by using my Email address in the Username field instead of my Name as it seems that the Exchange server was looking for the Email address in the wrong location after OutLook was restarted.
Diane Poremsky says
Correct, the email address is your username, not your name or just the alias.
John H says
Diane,
I solved the problem i was having. Like many, I couldn't re-add my migrated Hotmail account. It would not connect to the Exchange server after restarting Outlook 2010. After doing a lot of reading and talking to Exchange admins at my former employer it came down to a client issue. Office Professional 2010 needs to have at least service pack 2 installed for Outlook to talk to Exchange. I had SP1. I installed SP2 and the migrated account could be added with no problem.
I won't spend a lot of time bemoaning the situation that it took me a week of reading and calling around to sort this out. I talked to MS support twice and they were completely unaware of the migration.
John H
Diane Poremsky says
Yeah, you need to have Outlook 2010 and 2007 updated for them to work with Office 365 - I recommend fully updated with all current patches -the April 2015 patch adds better support.
Janet says
Outlook won't let me remove the existing email account until I add my contacts etc to the 'Data Feed' Tab. There was nothing in the instructions in the MS email about this. Can you please explain more?
Diane Poremsky says
You only have one email account or the others are imap? Outlook needs a data file set as default - this can either be a pst file or an exchange account. When you remove the connector, you lose the default data file. You can avoid that by adding the new account first - or adding a pst temporarily.
Janet says
Thanks for your reply Diane. How do I add a .pst file and then how do I get rid of it once I re-add my email account to Outlook and get my contacts etc 'back to normal'.
Janet
Diane Poremsky says
In Account Settings, click on Data Files tab. Type "Temp" in the File name field and click ok. Select it as choose Set as Default. Remove the account then add the new one - go back to the Data Files tab and make sure the Exchange data file is set as default then select the pst and click Remove.

I just noticed that on my iPhone the icon for one of my Outlook accounts (in Mailboxes) has changed to the Exchange icon, whereas my other Outlook account still shows the Outlook icon. This might be a handy way to check if your account has been moved across.

I have Outlook 2010 with connector and 2 accounts; one account suddenly stopped connecting a week or so ago although I could connect by web with same login information (getting same error message stated in quote at beginning of this discussion)...I have spent hours each day since trying everything to connect back to this account on my desktop PC... removed account, re-established it again through Control Panel "Mail"...tried Exchange Server as stated here... running Vista and all updates in place... nothing working yet!
Diane Poremsky says
Any error messages when you add the account to outlook using auto account setup?
Katie says
Great info/solution much better than anything else I found. The error message is so cryptic it took me quite a while to figure out what to search for from the Outlook connector server status message. I vaguely recall getting an email (maybe) about some migration, but it seemed like spam so paid no attention and I deleted it. Apparently that was a mistake, but your post saved the day. Thank you!!
IT says
All my folders and email disappeared from one of my msn.com account. A second account is intact. What happened? Thousands of emails are gone. In one computer the folders are still there but no emails. In another computer everything is gone.
Diane Poremsky says
Is everything in the account at outlook.com?
IT says
On my personal account all the folders with all the emails have disappeared from outlook 2010 and outlook.com
On my work account everything is still there ( I have to back it up before that too is gone). They are both ms.com accounts
This happened once before but within a couple of days everything was back, but not this time.
Diane Poremsky says
How is the account configured in Outlook - as imap. pop3, or exchange? do you access the account from more than one computer? Are the messages in the deleted folder online?
IT says
Both accounts say MAPI in my computer. It required that I have Outlook connector. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it to no avail.
I do access my accounts from various sources (other computers, tablets and phones)
On line (outlook.com) my work email is intact.
My personal account deleted all my saved folders and emails.
I am in the process of saving all my work emails to my computer's pst folder. There's also a folder called Outlook Data File (it has my work name on it)
I am using Outlook 2010.
Someone said it was because I had too many folders but I have far many more folders and emails in my work email account and nothing's happened....yet!!
I received the now infamous email from Microsoft about the account changing in the next few weeks and within 36 hours everything was gone.
Diane Poremsky says
If your accounts were migrated to the new server, the connector will no longer work - you need to remove the account and use auto account setup to add them back to outlook.
Is the msn account you used here the one affected? If you log into outlook.com, is your mail there? (the banner will say outlook mail (preview), not outlook.com, if it was migrated)
IT says
The msn account I am using here is the account in question. The only thing is that all the folders I created and then saved email in are gone. Everything else is working, I can still receive/send mail and I created one new folder to see what happens to it.
When I sign in on line it says OUTLOOK.COM not outlook mail.
If I delete the account from Outlook.com can I create a new account with the same credentials?
Diane Poremsky says
outlook.com in the banner means it wasn't migrated yet. Are the folders you created available in the browser when you log into the account? If so, they are on the server and removing and adding the account back as either IMAP or using the connector will bring the folders back.
Bret says
Hi Dianne, Thanks again for the excellent tutorial. As I mentioned in my previous comment, I was able to get my @outlook.com email in Outlook 2003 working on my Windows 8 platform using your methods. I need to know if there i something I need to do to speed up actions, as everything is now very, very sluggish. In fact, if I attempt to move items between folders, I have to click back and forth between folders before any changes take place. Also sending emails has been an issue. Sometimes they go and sometimes they don't. Also if I receive emails they don't automatically show up in my inbox until I click on a different folder then back to the inbox folder-which then refreshes. Any suggestions?
Diane Poremsky says
Confirming you are using Outlook 2003, that its not a typo. The change folder behavior usually indicates an issue with a firewall or nat router but i'll see if I can repro - it shouldn't be any slower than any other imap account.
Tresa says
Can you provide the steps to fix the issue in Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016?
Diane Poremsky says
Unlike earlier versions, the account should continue to sync but the "experience" is better using Exchange services instead of activesync. Go to File, Account Settings. Remove the EAS account, click New and fill out auto account setup and let outlook find the new account.
Tresa says
This is super helpful, thank you! What a great resource you are! Since our accounts are not continuing to sync, the "lack of synching" is a function of the grandfathered domains.live.com accounts then? Do you still think this will be resolved or is Microsoft forcing an upgrade to a paid version of what they promised would be free? :(
Diane Poremsky says
It will be resolved (but I have no idea when). It works for some people but not others (even within the same domain), so they aren't ending the program - they just ran into issues migrating accounts.
Tresa says
Hi Diane -- just checking to see if you are able to sync yet or have any update regarding the status of domains.live.com outlook accounts... Thanks so much!
Diane Poremsky says
Mine is not working yet. Is just your account affected or others within your domain? Support was going to check my domain - I'll have them check yours as well.
Tresa says
Thanks! None of the email accounts in my domain are working. My partner uses AppleMail for his desktop software and that stopped working first -- about two weeks before mine started working.
Diane Poremsky says
I'm assuming this is a typo and should be 'stopped'? >> about two weeks before mine started working.
I passed your domain along to my contact in support so they can take a look at it.
Tresa says
I'm about at the end of my rope and thinking of switching to the new Google Domains solutions... I'm assuming if I had paid email there would be some sort of customer support and we are left dangling because we took advantage of the free offer during their promotional period...
Diane Poremsky says
Correct, if you had a paid office 365 exchange account, you would have support (it's actually pretty good too, better than what the consumer side gets) but you wouldn't have these problems to begin with.
steppie says
Hi Diane,
Was Support ever able to provide a solution for your Domain? My domains.live.com outlook account is still not working.
Thank you.
Diane Poremsky says
No, not yet. They are looking into it but had vacations scheduled - I'm not expecting it to be fixed before Jan 4.
What is your custom domain? I'll ask them to look at it. You can post it here - I either delete the message or will remove the domain name from it before approving it.
steppie says
Hi Diane,
I was wondering if you ever received a response from your contact on this or if there may have been any other possible solutions for custom domains with Outlook 2007?
I tried adding an @outlook alias, but the account wouldn't setup with the alias.
Do you think we're out of luck at this point?
Thank you
Diane Poremsky says
They are still trying to fix it - I last heard from them last week and they thought they might have it fixed in a few days. My account is the guinea pig - it's still broken tonight.
Ivan says
La solución. en mi caso, funciono a la perfeccción, saludos..
(The solution. in my case, it worked today, greetings...)
Tresa says
How will we know when custom domains (grandfathered from domains.live.com) can proceed with the necessary repair to replace the connector? Is yours working yet?
Diane Poremsky says
No, mine is broken - it only works in the outlook app on my phone. To make it worse, the custom domain address can't send mail - it goes out as from an assigned alias, on behalf of my custom domain.
I hope to know more tomorrow.
Tresa says
I am able to send email without an assigned alias on behalf of...
Tresa says
Hi Diane -- any update on this from your inside connection? Also, what is the process for Outlook 2013 and 2016 users? We have several that cannot connect since the migration.
Diane Poremsky says
They "are aware of problems and are working on it". No ETA though or an explanation of the cause.
Outlook 2013 and 2016 users should be able to keep using EAS but will need to remove and re-add the account to switch to Exchange (which is recommended).
John H says
Diane,
very helpful forum you have here. I have 2 Hotmail accounts that I am accessing via Outlook 2010. One has migrated to Exchange, the other hasn't. Both are using the Hotmail connector. I dropped and re-added the migrated account according to your instructions. That was successful and a connection was made to the server. I closed and re-opened Outlook and the re-added account cannot be accessed. There is an authentication error. I am assuming this is due to the remaining non-migrated account still using the Connector. My suspicion is that I will have to wait for the second account to be migrated when I can uninstall the Connector and both should then work as Exchange accounts.
I haven't seen a comment yet on the issue of having one migrated and one non-migrated account being accessed via Outlook 2010.
Diane Poremsky says
It's not due to the two accounts. I think some of the accounts are messed up (like mine) - quite a few of us can't get the migrated accounts working in outlook at all.
Stan says
We've been using windows live domains (with our own personal domain) to receive emails from outlook.com via the outlook connector. I've tried everything above to get us back up and running in Outlook 2010 (and following the instructions in the migration email) and we are pretty much dead in the water. So unless you know what the issue may be, I think you need to point out that this WILL NOT work at all for Live Domain users who BYOD.
Diane Poremsky says
Yeah, a lot of people with custom domains are currently dead in the water. I was told last night that it was fixed - obviously not true because my account is still broken as is yours and several others. I'm trying to get clarification on it and find out why some are still broken.
Were you the admin for the custom domain? I'm trying to remember if i had an option to let MS manage the DNS. I manage the DNS for my custom domain and suspect I need to update DNS to make it work.
Stan says
I'm not but I've been in touch with him and he may think that's the issue. We'll have to check it out. I'm not even sure if the Live Domains portal is still open for admin management but it doesn't look like it.
Diane Poremsky says
They closed the portal when they ended the program (or soon after).
someone else posted here (either this article or another one about the migration) that both he and his wife were moved - one account works, one doesn't. That points to internal issues with the migration.
F Muldoon says
Just in case anyone has @hotmail, @msn and @outlook email addresses and Outlook 2010. This will not work for you.
To sync your Hotmail you need the Outlook connector. But if you have it installed, your msn and outlook mails will not work.
I've spend the last few days trying to figure out what to do, other than accessing the other account via the web, or setting them to forward mail into the accounts that sync to Outlook 2010. If anyone has a solution please share.
Diane Poremsky says
Was your account moved to the new server? if so, you can no longer use the connector. You need to let outlook set the account up using auto account setup - and you need to have the all updates installed if using outlook 2007 or 2010.
To see if it was migrated: does the banner at outlook.com say 'outlook.com' (old server) or 'outlook mail (preview)', which is the new server.
Farrah Muldoon says
Two accounts are outlook mail (preview), two are not. So two need outlook connector, two use exchange. Also, I keep getting pop-ups from autodiscover.hotmail.com requesting verification.
I've used Outlook on my desktop for many years and this is just so messy. I'm not very good with tech stuff so I'm not happy with the situation.
Diane Poremsky says
do you know which accounts are triggering the autodiscover prompt? are they all msn addresses or do you have some custom domains too?
Farrah Muldoon says
Finally have a makeshift solution. Three of my four accounts have updated to outlook (preview), one remains on outlook. I removed all accounts from Outlook 2010, after which I uninstalled outlook connector. I set up a new profile in windows mail.
I then added back each updated account to outlook on my desktop. I got the autodiscover prompt, and checked the 'do not ask me about this again' box because I was tired of seeing it repeatedly pop up. After restarting Outlook, these accounts run using exchange.
I then reinstalled connector and added my last email account (the one that was not updated), and it's working. I don't know how, but as long as I can see all my emails in one place I'm OK. I'm hoping this account will also update soon, so that I can get all of them working the same way. It will mean removing and adding back the accounts again, but I can live with it.
Dean Thorson says
Is this still working for you?
I have used Outlook for years and have come to really hate migrations. I was using Outlook 2010 with multiple @outlook, @msn, @Hotmail accounts and experienced the same failures when removing and adding back a converted account. It was one of my least used accounts and I didn't expect the consequence of it replacing my primary (default) account (and associated contacts, calendar, tasks) when I restarted Outlook. Removing the converted account left my contacts and tasks a little messed up.
My plan was to only use Outlook 2010 on non-converted accounts until all my accounts have been converted but maybe your solution is worth a try if the conversions are not going to be completed until Spring.
Farrah Muldoon says
Sorry about the delayed response.
It's still working for me, but only until the last account migrates. Then I will have to do it all over again. I did have to redo all my rules.
Jay says
Very helpful, and incredible how difficult it is to finally find a straight answer. Thank you! One hitch: after removing my Hotmail connector account and re-adding it as an Exchange account, the display name in emails sent from my Hotmail account using Outlook 2007 now only show as Hotmail login name "jblow" instead of my full name "Joe Blow" like they used to with the old Outlook Connector. I thought I could can it in the "Microsoft Exchange Settings" dialog in Outlook 2007, but it shows some cryptic Exchange server name, and the mailbox user name is "jblow" and is read-only. Other posted articles say only the "Exchange server administrator" (who is now Microsoft) can only change this. Any way to get my email display name to show my full name again? If not, this is a big regression for the "new-and-improved" Hotmail migration.

When you use Exchange it gets the name from the AD, not from the client configuration.
Check your account settings in Outlook.com - it should get the name from there.

That's what I thought, too. So I checked my MS account profile, and it correctly shows my full name associated with my account email. However, my sent emails are only showing my email alias, not my full name. Who do I contact for more help?
Jay Clark says
Thanks Diane. I thought the same thing. I checked my "Your Info" settings in my outlook.com account, and it shows my full name associated my account email address. Is there another account setting that needs changing to get Exchange/AD to use my full name in the "from" field of my sent emails, and not just my email prefix?
Diane Poremsky says
That is where it should be changed. I'll see what i can find out.
Jay Clark says
Diane, 24 hrs later, it now appears to work as expected. Don't know if MS changed something on the back-end, but my sent emails from Outlook 2007 are now showing my full name per my online account profile. Thanks for your help.
Diane Poremsky says
Cool. Thanks for the update. Now if they'd only get the rest of the problems fixed.

Diane - my MS account settings (at account.microsoft.com) show my full name for my associated Hotmail email address. The outlook.com settings show the same email address for the "From Address" settings, so I assume it would us my full name associated with the email address. Instead, it's only showing the email address prefix in the "From" field of my sent emails (e.g. 'jblow' from my 'jblow@hotmail.com' address instead of 'Joe Blow') . Any other ideas or other Outlook.com/Exchange settings I can check?
Diane Poremsky says
I'll check on it.

thanks, that worked. I was thinking i had to wait Microsoft to repair it but you saved me some time

Okay my thanks to you for this step-by-step tutorial. A search of help topics from Microsoft yielded nothing much. In fact I ended up with a system restore by the time I finished with their "advice." Thanks to you this Outlook 2003 user can go on with my workday now.

Since few days, my outlook.com and live.ca emails accounts stopped to work in my Outlook 2007. Even I removed and reinstalled nothing work like before.. I tested it by sending emails and I can read its when I get on Outlook.com but not through my Outlook Connector in Outlook 2007. I use its for important matters.
Do I have to wait another Microsoft migration week before its will get through ...?
Waiting for your comment.
Diane Poremsky says
Does the banner above the mailbox say Outlook.com or Outlook mail? If it says mail, then the account was migrated. As long as all updates are installed for Outlook 2007, you can use auto account setup to add the outlook.com account as Exchange accounts. Remove the connector account from your profile and uninstall the connector.

Diane, on 11/21/15 one of my three accounts (custom domain) stopped working in Outlook 2016 and my android phone at the same time. Logging into Outlook.com shows 'Outlook Mail (Preview)' at the top, where my other two unaffected accounts continue to show 'Outlook.com'.
Yesterday and today, I spent a total of 7 hours in MS live chat, and got transferred to 8 different people, explaining the problem multiple times to each person. The live chat staff appear to be Indian, and it's clear that some language barrier exists because I had to mention to them repeatedly all the facts about the problem account.
What I learned so far is that the problem is not with Outlook 2016 or my android phone. This is a problem on MS's end. Instructions for users that have custom domains is useless because none of the MS techs I chatted with had no idea about what server name to use when manually configuring the account in Outlook 2016.
MS decided, after all the people I communicated with and having to explain this issue over and over again, to escalate the case to Microsoft Tier 3 team. They sent me an email stating this, and that they would contact me again after they fix it (not holding my breath). So, the day/time now is 11/24/15 6:30pm PST, and I await their response. If I get a response of any kind, I'll post any useful info here in this message thread.
One final note: while the problem account does show "Outlook Mail (Preview)" at the top, removing and adding back in the account in Outlook 2016 has not worked so far. I attempted to use autodiscovery, but it can't locate a custom domain. No idea why. The server name I tried to use was s.outlook.com, while the server name I was using successfully until last Friday was snt406-m.hotmail.com. The last MS tech wanted me to grant him remote access to my machine so he could 'fix' Outlook, but I said "NO, Outlook 2016 isn't the problem". He pressed me on this twice, but I declined to waste any more time on things that are not related to the issue.
If anyone reading this message wants to spend the time with MS on the phone or in live chat, you might consider saving your time and sanity. Just my $.02 - do whatever you see fit for yourself.

Thanks for sharing. If you hear from tier 3, let us know how it turns out. I was told last night it was fixed, I said no, it wasn't and I'm waiting to hear back.

Still can't send email but now thanks for info so I can receive email using Outlook 2003 program. My email address is an msn.com account. When I changed the account to imap, the only place I entered the msn.com was for my email address. I followed instructions for migration but outgoing emails go to the outbox under personal folders ( not my imap folder) and don't send. I receive error message 0X800CCC7D ( i disable Kaspersky email virus check).
Frustrating that I can't send email with Outlook 2003. Help please.
Diane Poremsky says
That error code relates to ssl. In Account Settings, look at the port and ssl settings - are you using port 25 and SSL?
Rick says
Yes, port 25 and I checked boxes (following directions on this site) for SSL requirement for receiving and sending servers. I have turned off email virus check from Kaspersky. When setting up my IMAP email settings, I used my email address ( ... @msn.com) for email address and LogOn user name. I entered the outlook.com server information for incoming and outgoing using same entries used on this site for Imap settings.(imap-mail@outlook.com, and smtp-mail@outlook.com). Still can't send email using Outlook 2003 but having no problems receiving emails.
Any ideas on what else to try to eliminate error 0x800CCC7D (outgoing smtp sever does not support SSL secured connection).
Thanks Diane for taking time on this site to help us all!

Hi Diane,
I think i finally solved the imap integration problems with custom domains that have recently migrated to the new outlook services.
I too had a lot of issues with my custom domain, went through quite a few forums, spoke to microsoft support (even gave them remote access) and other supportive experts but without success.
I finally solved the issue last night after playing with my settings for a while. Although, i've only successfully done this through the outlook 2016 app for mac, I will be trying this soon with my Apple mail app, too.
Instead of IMAP, i tried to sync my account through Exchange and forced my outlook app to auto detect my settings. Voila, it worked! It connected through EWS. I guess this should work through the Apple mail app too, as it also supports EWS.
Use the exchange option, Put in your Username and Password and use this url for the exchange server :
https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx
I hope this works out for everyone facing this issue.
Cheers..!
Diane Poremsky says
Yeah, users should remove the account from your mail client and add it back, using auto account setup. Phones *should* make the migration seamlessly as EAS should keep working, but it's really better to remove the account and add it back.
Nathalie says
Hi, thank you very much. I succed to solve 1/2 of my problems. I can now received my e-mails but not send anything code error 0x80042109 Outlook can't connect to smtp.
Diane Poremsky says
What version of Outlook desktop do you use and what type of email account is it set up as? (POP3, IMAP, or Exchange)
Rick says
I followed dorecctiom given on this site and port 25 is set for outgoing and ssl checked. I have tried other ports without success. Anyt other ideas to try?
Diane Poremsky says
Port 25/SSL works. They didn't open any other ports for Outlook 2003 - the other versions use TLS, which is not supported in Outlook 2003. The only thing I can think is that your firewall or your ISP is blocking it. It's not uncommon for ISP to hijack port 25 as an anti-spam measure.
Rick says
Thanks to Diane I am able to receive and read emails in Outlook 2003. [Outlook.com has the preview label.] However, I am unable to send emails using Outlook 2003. Outgoing mail goes to the outbox in personal folder (not even in the outbox of the imap folder I created) and don't get sent. The error message is 0x800CCC7D - outgoing server(SMTP) does not support SSL secured connections. I have turned off Kaspersky virus checker for emails and cleared SSL State. I have an msn.com email account but the only time I entered msn.com on the Imap set up was when I listed my email address under User information and Logon Information . In the Server information I listed the IMAP server as imap-mail.outlook.com and the outgoing server is listed as "smtp-mail.outlook.com" . I did the Advanced setup changes listed in the directions on the site. Any suggestions on how to send emails?
Diane Poremsky says
Did you leave it on port 25? (Yes, it's not normally an SSL port, but Microsoft has configured it for SSL.)
