New Outlook Option: End Appointments Early
An Outlook user wanted to know if Outlook has the ability to add some “respite time” between back-to-back meetings, to allow the participant to move from one meeting to other without getting delayed and stressed.
Yes! It’s in the Office 365 Insider builds now and will be in a future update for Office subscribers.
Set the respite time in File, Options, Calendar: End appointments and meetings early. If the meeting or appointment is less than an hour, you can set a different “end early” time than you use for longer appointments and meetings. For less than an hour, you can end the meeting 5, 8, or 10 minutes early. When the meeting is longer than an hour, you can end it 5, 10, or 15 minutes early.
There really isn't anything special about this feature, certainly nothing you can't do yourself, by typing the time in. If you use a time shortcut, such as 8.50a, its almost as fast as the new feature and works in all versions of Outlook.
Junk Mail: Blocked Senders and Rules
I’ve had a lot of questions recently from Outlook.com users complaining about blocked senders not being blocked. They create rules to delete the mail, but the rules fail too.
I didn’t have to look far for the cause: Outlook is working as intended, but that doesn’t match the user’s expectation of how it show work.
Outlook’s Blocked Sender puts the sender’s address or domain on a list and messages will always be moved to the Junk Email folder. Users expect that Blocked Senders are blocked from the mailbox, not moved to Junk Email. One reason the messages are not blocked is in the event you accidently add a "good" address or domain to the blocked list. If the mail is dropped, you wont be able to recover it. If it's moved to the Junk Email folder, you might find it.
The rules are failing to delete the spam because they run on mail in the Inbox after the Junk mail filter has removed all the spam. The messages the rules are supposed to delete are moved before the rule runs.
If the junk mail filter is moving the messages to the Junk Email folder, there is no need to block the sender. Most spammers use an address for a short period then move on to another address and you end up blocking an address that will never send you mail again. There is a limit of 1000 names for the Safe and Blocked list combined and you don’t want to fill it up with addresses that are never used again.
Outlook 2010 Update Bug?
There are reports that the latest update for Outlook 2010, KB 4461529, is causing Outlook to crash on start up.
Microsoft is investigating. If your Outlook 2010 install is affected, uninstall the update.
