The following is a list of known issues for Outlook 2007.

General | RSS | Search | Calendar | To-do and Tasks | Outlook Connector | Administrator | Developer

General Issues

Emptying Junk Email from IMAP accounts may return Not Read receipts even though you have Outlook 2007 set to not return receipts.

Outlook 2007 is slow

Outlook 2007 uses your existing account settings to create new ones for you. There are 4 files which contain information about add-ins, views, custom toolbars, and custom forms which may be corrupted in the upgrade process. You can safely delete (or rename) these as Outlook will recreate them without loss of data or settings, with the exception of outcmd.dat. This file holds customized toolbar settings, but since Outlook 2007 uses ribbons, not toolbars, you'll need to redo any customizations anyway.

Extend.dat - this file is located in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Views.dat and Outcmd.dat - these files are located at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Frmcache.dat - it's at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Forms

Keep in mind that unless you customized Outlook or installed custom forms, some of these files may not exist. Also, the folders that these files are in are hidden. if you need help viewing them see Where Are My Files?

For more information on the files Outlook uses, see Outlook file locations

If deleting the files doesn't help, try a new profile.

If you are using a Dell laptop with Media Direct, uninstall the Outlook Setup Addin (Cyberlink). This add-in not only slows Outlook down, but also turns all meeting requests into recurring meeting requests.

Outlook 2007 is so slooooow
Outlook and Slow HTML
Recurring Meeting Bug

You receive blank messages

Disable Outlook integration or email scanning feature of your anti-virus or security program.

Outlook is crashing

Disable add-ins. If you have Adobe Acrobat 6 installed, disable it's add-in first. SnagIt's addin will also crash Outlook. If Outlook crashes when you attempt to disable the addins, you'll need to edit the registry. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins and change the load behavior for Acrobat, SnagIt or other non-Microsoft add-ins to 0.

Sometimes when composing a mail, typing does not insert characters into the body of the message. Clicking the body also does not work.

Click on the To, CC, or Subject line and then click back into the body of the message.

Microsoft Outlook 2007 won't connect to Microsoft Exchange 5.5

The official word is as follows: "Microsoft continuously strives to provide a consistent and predictable end-of-life-cycle experience for all of its products. In accordance with standard Microsoft life-cycle policies Exchange 5.5 ended extended life-cycle support on January 10th, 2006. As a result, Outlook 2007 will not support Exchange 5.5. Because neither the Outlook or Exchange team is supporting this combination we will not discover and/or fix issues that crop up as the result of innovations in both products . Rather than subjecting customers to potential serious issues like data loss or frequent server downtime we choose to prevent Outlook from connecting to these older and now unsupported servers. Our research has shown that there is a relatively small set of customers who want to upgrade their desktops to the latest and greatest versions of Office and run server technology as old as Exchange 5.5. There are clearly exceptions but they don't seem to be the norm."

RSS Issues

When deleting an RSS feed on one machine while multiple Outlook clients are running against the same store, the entry in the Account Manager for the feed does not get removed.

If you delete an RSS feed's folder from one machine, the folder's deletion will roam to all of your other clients. The entry in the Account Manager for that feed will remain on all of the other machines until you reboot them.

When adding RSS feeds through the Account Manager it doesn't work.

The first time you add an RSS feed through the Account Manager it will not get added correctly. Once you close and re-open the Account Manager, all subsequent feeds will get added correctly.

Search Issues

Official comments on Outlook 2007 requiring Windows Desktop Search:

"Outlook has worked closely with the MS Search team to develop a version of our Instant Search functionality that leverages the new Windows Desktop Search 3.0 platform. These changes have required a significant investment in converting the underlying architectures of the Outlook application and as such have introduced changes into the end-user experience, specifically around configuring the new Outlook 2007 application and the need to install Windows Desktop Search 3.0.

Windows Desktop Search (WDS) 3.0 is a native component of Vista, and is being shipped separately as a system component through Windows Update for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users. WDS is a system service that indexes file, email and other content in order to provide fast searches over content and properties. It is an upgrade to all previous 2.x versions of Windows Desktop Search you may currently use.

We will be shipping Outlook 2007 with a new version of Instant Search technology that is built on top of WDS and is dependent on its presence for search to work. B1TR included a native Office indexing component. In order to provide a consistent search experience across the Windows Explorer, Office applications and any others utilizing Windows Desktops Search, and to optimize system resources, we have decided to build on a single, unified indexing component for Windows. The result of this work will be in Outlook 2007 Beta 2, and therefore require installation of WDS 3.0 at boot time."

Where did the MSN Toolbar and/or LookOut toolbar go?

Windows Desktop Search 3.0 disables the MSN Toolbar and LookOut in Outlook. LookOut and the MSN Toolbar are now considered to be old versions of Microsoft products. To offer users the clearest and most integrated search experience for Outlook 2007, Outlook disables these add-ins when Outlook starts.

If you delete or move an item from a list of search results, nothing happens.

When you are viewing the results of a query, if you delete or move an item it will not be updated in those results, but it WILL be deleted or moved as intended (in the background).

To see the updated list, enter your search again.

Windows Desktop Search has been installed for a few hours already and mail is still not indexed, so searching in Outlook 2007 does not show any or all of the results.

Microsoft uses "back-off logic" that prevents the system from indexing (and slowing your machine down) when you are actively using it. If you leave your machine alone for more than a few minutes it will continue to index.

For best results when indexing a store, leave Outlook running unattended overnight to fully index your store.

While Windows Desktop Search is indexing your data it displays an error such as this:

The instruction '0x03f7f516' referenced memory at "0x0xxxxxx". The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program.

This is a crashing issue with the Adobe PDF iFilter component (which indexes PDF files).

You need to disable the PDF iFilter and then restart the Search service:

  1. Go to Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall the 'Adobe PDF IFilter 6.0.'
  2. From a command prompt, type net stop wsearch then net start wsearch to restart the Search service.

Calendar Issues

When I print my calendar, recurring appointments that extend into the next week don't print correctly. They extend into the margin instead of wrapping to next week.

This is a know issue that is fixed in SP1, due out in late 2007. Use the calendar printing assistant. See Calendar Printing Tools for Outlook for links to this and other printing tools.

Will e-mail addresses included in the CC or BCC fields of sharing messages for restricted calendars get access to the published calendar?

When composing a sharing message for a calendar published with restricted access, e-mail addresses in CC or BCC fields do indeed get access to the calendar.

When adding an Internet Calendar Subscription through the Account Manager it does not work.

The first time you add an Internet Calendar Subscription through the Account Manager, it does not work. Closing and reopening Account Manager should enable all further subscriptions.

Publishing a calendar results in the loss of some copy/paste and drag-and-drop functionality for that calendar.

Publishing a calendar to the Internet currently causes appointment copy/paste and drag-and-drop functionality to stop working on that calendar.

To work around this issue, open up the appointment details and change the settings through that dialog rather than via drag and drop, or copy/paste operations.

Outlook is unable to subscribe to Internet Calendars when a webcal link that contains international characters is clicked in Internet Explorer.

The calendar can be manually subscribed in Outlook by copying the Internet Calendar address and creating the subscription through the Internet Calendars tab, located under Account Settings on the Tools menu.

To-do Bar & Tasks Issues

In the To-Do Bar, Related Messages and Messages from Sender under Find All do not work.

To find all related messages from a mail item in the To-Do Bar, open the item by double clicking on it, then click on the Infobar (CTRL+SHIFT+W) at the top of the message and select Find related messages.

All Day Events do not display in the To-Do bar

At this time there is not resolution.

Outlook Connector Issues

Search fails to find items in the Outlook Connector mailbox

There is a known bug where Instant Search does not work for Microsoft Office Outlook Connector mailboxes. There is a workaround to enable legacy search for these mailboxes:

Go to Tools, Options menu then choose Search Options. In the Indexing list, remove the check for the Outlook connector mailboxes.

Administrator Issues

Can't run PRF files to create a new profile

As a security measure, PRF's can only be imported using the /importPRF switch. See How to use Outlook's Command line switches for help using switches.

Developer Issues

Known issues with Outlook extensibility include the following:

  1. Collaboration Data Objects 1.21 (CDO) is not available through Office Setup. CDO is only be available as a Web download in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.
  2. Attempting to theme Outlook by providing a manifest for Outlook.exe may cause Outlook to hang. This is because Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 automatically provides visual styles (also known as Windows XP themes) for custom user interfaces such as property pages. If your property page was built with Windows common controls, certain controls may not display correctly. Check boxes or option buttons inside of a frame control must be placed inside a picture box control.

Outlook crashes if you tab into or out of a custom form with a message body in the Reading Pane.

Use the mouse to click into and out of the Reading Pane.

Labels on form regions may have a gray background.

Some form region customizations may render with a gray background behind label controls. You can work around this issue by resizing the form slightly at runtime, which will cause the labels to paint correctly.

Hi Diane! Me again. lol In our nursing dept., their receptionist has to look back in the calendar for medical appointments, but when she does, it just hangs and hangs! Anything I can do to speed it up for her? Cache mode was off, so I turned it on. I tested the speed of someone with only 2 appointments and it does show, but is still slow. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Diane,
Hoping you can help me out again. Our clients are set up using Outlook 2007 and Exchange Server 2007. Suddenly, anytime we try to set up a new email, we get the message that it can't find it in the address list. However, my boss & I run Outlook 2010 and we can see the new employees names in the GAL. I can also create their new email on my computer using 2010, but on their computers 2007 won't let me. Any thoughts on this? Very frustrated here.

You have the account set up in cached mode? When you click the To field and select the name from the Global address list (not the offline address list), does it work?

I can't tell if it's in cached mode, because I can't create her account to see if it is checked or not. Is there another way to check? When I click the To field & select her name, from the GAL (online) it works.

PS - I sure appreciate your helping me!

In Send/Receive Groups command, download the address book. This gets a fresh copy of the offline address book. See if that fixes it.

If it happens with all appointments she tries to open, the profile is likely corrupt. If only a few appointments are affected, then it might be just the appointments are corrupt.

When you are using IMAP, Outlook.com, or Exchange server, the mail is delivered to folders used only by that account. you'd need to set the account up as POP3 to deliver email to My Personal Folder file.

in the folder list navigation pane (ctrl+6) you can see all of the folders in your profile and expand them - look for the missing mail in the folders.
Gmail accounts look something like this - labels are converted to folders.

If you enter your name, email address and password and let outlook find all of the server information, it's auto account setup. If you type in the server names and the port # (on the Advanced tab), it's manual setup.

One common cause (which I often forget about) is two-factor authentication. If you enabled it on your account, you need to use an app password, not your real password.

When trying to access my outlook today I have been getting an error that says: Your offline folder file cannot be configured. After you say, OK, I then get File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file. Well all my access and such was working ok last night and all of yesterday. Do you maybe have an idea as to what I could do to access my outlook?

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server Colleague Import Add
      Microsoft Outlook Mobile Service

My guess is that abbyy is the problem (it caused so many problems in Outlook 2013 that an Outlook update disables it), but if you aren't using an Exchange server mailbox or send sms messages through outlook, you can disable three Microsoft addins - keep the search addin. If you don't use team viewer features in outlook (scheduling, i believe) disable that as well.

    Hi Dianne,
Since I had the 2007 Outlook installed I have had a problem with the outbox: a) Occasionally messages will not be sent no matter how long I wait for "send-receive" to finish. b) If I have hit "send" and then open the "outbox" folder, the message line apperas in regular fonts (not in italics, as messages waiting to be sent should) and all messages in the line have to be rewritten and "send" button to be pressed BUT with the "outbox" folder closed. Whenever the "outbox" folder opens it disqualifies waiting messages from being ready to be sent. In other words absolutely no editting can be done on messages in the outbox. I open it only to delete useless message or to copy/paste the body on a new message field. I would appreciate your input.

It sounds like an add-in is "reading" the messages. Try restarting Outlook in Safe mode and see if it works correctly.

To open Outlook in Safe mode: Close Outlook then hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon. You'll get a message asking if you want to start in Safe mode. Click Ok.

It could be stuck read receipts. If you have 4 accounts, it could be because Outlook can't count and includes each account. This was more common with Outlook 2010 though.

I keep getting an error message when I try to send and receive emails from my msn. account. The error message says that the operation can not be preformed because connection to server is offline. Also when I try to exit outlook it says I have an "unsent" email. but there is nothing in my outbox. I have 3 different accounts with msn. 2 are Hotmail. and one MSN. It only appears to be happening on the MSN account. All of these I am using with Outlook 2007. I even tried removing the MSN account from Outlook and reinstalling it, but that didn't help. Any ideas?

Is this something new - did it work before? I heard from a few people that some of the Microsoft services are having issues, so if its a fairly new problem, give it 24 hours.

The unsent mail could be read receipts. If you are using the Outlook Connector, it might be easier just to delete the data file for the account that is triggering the message (or all, if you aren't sure) unless you have a boatload of mail to re-download.

Not sure what I am doing wrong but when I save a Custom view for folders it is fine until I close and re-open Outlook. At that point it is no longer in the "Custom View Organizer" list.
Similarly any mods to e.g. the "Messages" view last only until I close Outlook.

Something is causing the views to be reset by the sounds of it. Are you using a shortcut you created or edited to open Outlook? If so, make sure it doesn't have the /cleanviews switch. (Default switch is /recycle when the installation creates the shortcuts.)

What antivirus do you use?> Do you sync with a device, using sync software on the computer? Anything that keeps outlook from closing "cleanly" can cause the views to be reset. (The autocomplete cache is usually affected too, and what most people notice - new names aren't saved to it.)

It's google sync doing it. The only way to prevent it from starting outlook is to remove it from start up and run it manually after windows starts. If you just want to delay it, you can use a batch file in the Startup folder that waits for a few minutes before starting the programs.

If you checked in msconfig and its not there or in startup, do you have an addin installed that is accessing outlook data? The google sync tool is one - but there are more.

(Windows key + R to open the Run command, type msconfig and press Enter).

    Hi Diane
Very helpful page. I have an IMAP account on Outlook 2007 with Windows 7. When I try to save a block of emails as a text file to my desktop, Outlook almost invariably crashes, although it does write the text file. Infrequently, if there are few emails and no attachments, it doesn't crash, although I don't expect an attachment to be saved in a text only save. Since I have to save email strings frequently, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Does it give you an error message? Check in Event Viewer. It obviously shouldn't crash - my first trouble shooting steps would be a repair of the install and run scanpst on the data file.

The McAfee addin for outlook can cause issues but i don't think it will affect the signature problem.

Are you using 64-bit windows? If so, see stationery button won't work - the signature button is also affected by the problem.

Running Outlook 2007 on Windows 7: I need to change my automatic signature settings, but when I click on the button to do this I get the message: "Another version of Outlook is running, close it" I have checked in Task Manager: other versions are not running there. Rebooting does not clear this problem. It used to work fine, last I needed to do this and nothing has changed since. I also tried running Repair to no effect.

Also ocassioanally it decides it won't access some of my mail files. Closing Outlook and re-opening always fixes that!

I Have a problem, when outlook 2007 is installed after outlook 2002 I'll get the message Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client. When you click the message, outlook is working fine. But every time you start it, the message appears. I deleted the register key PreFirstRun and the message is gone. I checked everything IE, WORD etc and they all have a relation with outlook, so I can send attachments without any problem. Its for a population of 500 users, and I don't no how to solve the problem without deleting the registerkey. Did you ever see this problem. grtz Michel

You can use a logon script to delete the key. You may be able to do it using Group policy too (especially if changing the first run setting).

Nope, the paperclip does not disapear after time. The image is rendered, I can check that and see this at the extention of the image. Anyway it is not handy because there is no way you can see the real attachements. It happens on all the machines with Windows XP and Office 2007 installed. So the problem must be there somewhere... If its going to be solved I will let your know.....

I'm having the following problem: Outlook 2007 on a Windows 7 machine with no Office installed show a mailbox as it should be. No problem at all. The same mailbox viewed on a Windows XP machine with Office 2007 installed showes by every email a paperclip. This because of the signature used. This signature is having a picture logo. So can anyon tell me how to prevent emails with no attachement from showing this paperclip. Html is needed for email so changing the format is no option.

    Thanks in advance,

The picture logo is the cause. Once the message renders the paperclip should disappear.

What type of email account are you using? IMAP accounts tend to show the paperclip more than POP3.

If it doesn't work in Safe mode, try running a repair of your office install.

If it works in Safe mode, then an addin is causing problems.

Hi and thanks for your very informative articles. I wonder if you can help with a strange and annoying little problem with my calendar appointments in Outlook 2007 (on Windows 7): when I am adding a new appointment using the Appointment dialog box, the time drop-down box 'slider' does not work. To select a time that is lower down the list, I must click on a time and then use the down arrow - however, there are no 'pm' times - any time selected becomes 'am'. If I keep pressing the down arrow, eventually the box stops working with the latest time being 10.30am. I have found the only way to enter a time after midday is to manually type in 24 hr clock eg 17.00 becomes 5.00pm when you click anywhere outside of the field. Very strange behaviour - is this a known issue? Or do I need to repair my installation? Thanks in advance.

I have a problem with sending e-mail. When I click on "Send", the message goes to the "Outbox" folder where it is listed, not in italic, but regular fonts. On top it shows: "Date: none" and these messages are not transmitted when I click on "send/receive" but stay in the outbox. Some time earlier this would happen only occasionally but now it happens all the time practically disabling the "send" function. Receipt of messages is OK.

That means the meeting has not been cancelled yet and it is still visible on the other attendees.

    Hi Diane,

I have a problem encountered recently, i don't know if this is an Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010 Issue or even with Exchange 2010. Maybe you can share your thoughts on this.

Our users experience issues with regards to meeting invites. when someone sent a meeting invite to multiple users and accepts the invite, some of the attendees receive a notification that the meeting was cancelled where in fact it was not cancelled by the organizer of the meeting.

Note that users are using variants of Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010 and in Exchange and pop3 connection.

Hope you can share your expertise with my situation for i am in dead end with this issue.

This is with an /Exchange calendar or a calendar published to Office.com?

In Exchange, there is a limit to the number of entries you can share with - if you share with distribution (or security) groups, you can share with more, as the limit is with the size of the list in the Properties > Permissions dialog.

I'm inserting a certain signature from my signature list of 3. The other two work fine.
I'm inserting copied text from Word into the email or Notepad.

However, if I use a different signature, or if I type the text directly into the email, the emails are received.

I have no way of knowing if recipients are not receiving my emails, because there is no error message provided from my end. Please advise what the problem may be. I'm using Outlook 2007. My computer is a Dell laptop Inspiron puchased two years ago. Thanks!

I'm not sure I follow. When you use upgrade to color categories, categories not in the master list or labels used in Outlook 2002 / 2003 are added to categories and the next color is assigned to the category. Outlook won't add the categories back to the master category list if you deleted categories from it.

In Outlook 2007 I have a strange issue. When I have Outlook open and I click on an email to open it, itopens but hides behind Outlook down in the sys-tray. You can see another folder behind the main Outlook icon there but you can't bring up the email you double-clicked you can just see the shadow of another folder behind the main outlook in the systray.
Any ideas, I am pretty savvy, but this one has kicked my but.
    Thanks for your input.

We installed Outlook 2007 on a W2K8 Terminal server. When I attempt drag and drop an email from my inbox to a folder, it will drop the email in the first folder I hover over even though I have not let go of the mouse. Very frustrating. It works as expected on a W2K3 terminal server.

After I send the mail and lock my computer and unlock it later on, I see the same message in compose mode minimised on the taskbar.. it has gone to the recipient but I cannot close of open that minimized tab. Its like a ghost message stuck there.. which I cant do anything about... except ending outlook process and starting again.. wich is really frustrating

How long between sending it and locking the computer? If you wait a little to lock it, does it work as expected?
Do you have all updates installed? I believe an update addressed one cause of these ghost messages.

For months now I was suffering the problem Outlook was changing my mail headers to include read and delivery request with these turned off in Outlook 2007. After months of battling it and seeing on the net that no one came up with a fix, I decided to blame Norton Internet Security. To clear the problem, disable Norton AV and Firewall. Go through the process of sending an email to yourself. You can now re-enable Norton all should be fine.

Here is Symantec's wonderful response to the issue.

This might be related to a bug in Outlook where deleting mail from an IMAP account returns read receipts. If you mark the messages read first, it honors your response settings.

I changed my password and now I am having tons of issues. I keep receiving a dialog box... Type your user name and password.......smtp.att.yahoo.com asking for the password. Which password are they looking for? As of right now, I am not receiving any emails sent to my box.... yikes!!!

They are asking for your yahoo email password. It sounds like you had smtp authentication on and typed in the username password- go to Tools, Account Settings, double click on the account then More Settings button. Look on the outgoing server tab - are the settings correct?

    Thanks for the article!

I hope you can help me with another issue.

I have moved my Outlook 2007 PST file to another pc (both, Win7 Home).

Now, when I type a name at the TO: box, the contact name does not pop-up as it does on the old PC.

I know there is an index file that builds with time as you use Outlook but where can I find it? And, can I copy it to the new PC?

    Thanks,

    Sky

If you have access to the old computer, find the NK2 and move it to the new one.
Otherwise, you can repopulate the list with names in the address book - open a new message and press To. Add all the names to the message then close the message without sending.

See autocomplete for the location and more information.

Mails are not going when I give reply to the inbox mail. Always I have to open "New" & paste the Id which i received & then I have to send. Why I am unable to give reply? I'm using MS office 2007. Will anyone clarify?
