- Changes to Outlook.com premium
- Final Reminder: Office 365 stopped supporting RPC over HTTP
- Where is the Out of Office command?
Changes to Outlook.com Premium
Custom domains in Outlook.com was a short-lived experiment. As announced earlier this week (right after I encouraged a couple of clients to consider using it), Microsoft closed the Outlook.com Premium service to new subscribers. Current subscribers can continue to use the premium services as long as they continue to pay for it.
The only option for hosting custom domains will be on the business side, where email-only is $4/month per mailbox. This plan is closest to the Outlook.com offerings and includes the ability to configure junk mail filtering and other options, which are not available in Outlook.com. In my opinion, it’s a better (but more expensive) option for calendar and contact sharing with other family members.
Some of the “premium” features are being rolled into Office 365 Home and Personal subscriptions, including ad-free Outlook on the web (which should have been ad-free from day 1). In addition, Office 365 Home and Personal subscribers will have a 50 GB mailbox, enhanced email security and premium support.
However, subscribers need to have an Outlook.com address (including Hotmail, live, and msn.com) associated with their subscription to receive the premium upgrade. If you need the premium features and used a gmail, yahoo, or other non-outlook.com address to set it up, add an Outlook.com alias to the Microsoft account and set it as default. (It won’t mess up Microsoft account logins; at most you’ll need to sign in using the outlook.com address. I changed the addresses on several accounts last year and it was surprisingly smooth.)
It is expected to take several weeks for these new benefits to roll out to subscribers.

Final Reminder: Office 365 stopped supporting RPC over HTTP
As of Oct 31, 2017, RPC over HTTP is no longer a supported protocol for accessing mailboxes in Office 365 Exchange Online or Outlook.com. RPC over HTTP should still work (it does here), but Microsoft will not provide support or updates for Outlook clients that are using RPC over HTTP. As a result, users may have issues, or in Microsoft’s words “the mail experience will decrease over time”.
Rather than using RPC over HTTP, users should use MAPI over HTTP. However, while Outlook 2010 and up support MAPI over HTTP, Outlook 2007 won't work with MAPI over HTTP. To avoid being in an unsupported state, Outlook 2007 users will need to update to a newer version of Outlook or use Outlook on the web.
Users with Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, or Outlook 2010 have the option (via a registry key) to drop down to RPC over HTTP. This key should be removed so that Outlook can use MAPI over HTTP.
On-prem Exchange servers are not affected, only Exchange Online.
Where is the Out of Office command?
An Outlook user has a hard time finding the Out of Office dialog:
I always have to stop and think where to set up an out of office reply. I need a one click "enter your message here" option for Out of Office.
You can add the Automatic Replies command to the Send and Receive ribbon or Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) so the Automatic Replies (aka Out of Office) dialog is easy to find. You'll still need to set the times and message for both inside and outside the organization messages.
To customize the ribbon (or QAT), right click on an empty area a ribbon and choose Customize the ribbon, or go to File, Options, Customize Ribbon. Add a new group to the ribbon you want it on then select File tab from the Choose Commands from menu. Find Automatic Replies and add it to the new group. The process is similar to add it to the QAT: in the Quick Access Toolbar section, select File tab from the Choose Commands from menu. Find Automatic Replies and add it to the QAT.
What would be nice is the ability to automatically enable it when an appointment has Show time as set to Out of Office. Maybe someday…
Paste Options
An Outlook user had a question:
I like to compose e-mails in Word and then copy and paste into the body of an Outlook e-mail. When I paste it into Outlook, it uses Calibri, not the font I used in Word. It used to use the Word font. What changed?
It sounds like the paste options were changed. In Outlook 2010 or newer, open a new message and go to it’s File, Options dialog. Select Mail, then click the Editor Options button and select Advanced. Change the paste options to use source formatting. You may also want to show the Paste Options button so you can easily select from the various paste options.

Custom Form Security Changes
In the September 12 2017 security update, Microsoft disabled custom form script functionality. Forms with code behind them generate this error message: To help prevent malicious code from running, one or more objects in this form were not loaded. If you need scripts enabled, you'll need to set two keys, one to enable scripting and a second one with the message class name of each form that has code behind it.
