Office 2010 Beta Released

Office 2010 Beta is now available for download. I highly recommend users not install it on their “production” system. If you ignore this advice, install the 32bit version, especially if you use add-ins or sync with devices. Existing add-ins will not work with the 64bit version. There is a good chance they will work with the32bit build.

For best results, uninstall your current version of Outlook and make a backup copy of any PST in your profile. The old profile should work ok, but you should consider making a new one.

If you use the Outlook Connector uninstall it before installing it beta. Outlook should offer to download the new connector for you. If not, make a new profile and add the Hotmail/Live account to it. This should bring up the offer to download the new connector. Once installed, it will work with the account in the old profile.

FYI: Look on the File tab for Options and Account settings.

Best Practices for Archiving Email

An administrator recently asked about best practices for archiving older email. "Do you encourage employees to archive on a yearly, quarterly or some other time frame basis, or is it based upon volume of messages? Also, for notebook users, do you put the archived folders on their laptops and make a copy to a server for backup/retention purposes?"

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-003 - Critical

A critical security update is available for Exchange 2000, 2003 and 2007 and addresses two vulnerabilities in Exchange Server. The first vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a specially crafted TNEF message is sent to an Exchange Server. The attacker could use this to take complete control of the affected system with Exchange Server service account privileges. The second vulnerability could allow denial of service if a specially crafted MAPI command is sent to Exchange Server. A successful attacker could cause the Exchange System Attendant service and other services that use the EMSMDB32 provider to stop responding.

Fix for iPhone and Disappearing Appointments

There is a problem with iPhone v2 software syncing with Outlook where the events created on the device are only visible in a table view, not Day/Week/Month view.

When new appointments are entered into the iPhone they're set as repeating in Outlook but contain no data and Outlook doesn't know what to do with them. To fix, open the event on the iPhone and change it to recurring daily then end the recurrence on the date of the event before syncing.

A hotfix for Exchange server now available. See Some recurring calendar items disappear from the "Day/Week/Month" view in Outlook when a user uses Exchange ActiveSync on a mobile device to modify a recurring meeting in an Exchange 2003 environment
