Exchange Server 2010 and Large Mailboxes

by Michael B. Smith, MCSE/Exchange MVP

Love them or hate them, PSTs (Personal STores) have been with Exchange Administrators for a long time. PSTs have traditionally been used to move information out of an Exchange mailbox database. This has allowed users, who may have relatively low mailbox size quotas, to keep any amount of information that they want.

Outlook Social Connector update

An update for the social connector was released earlier this week. Included in the release are Facebook and Live Messenger providers and an updated social connector. Unlike the LinkedIn and MySpace providers released earlier, Facebook and Live Messenger providers support 64-bit Outlook. (You'll need to wait a bit longer for 64-bit versions of MySpace and LinkedIn providers.)

Outlook 2010's Group Schedules

As I mentioned in the June 24 issue of EMO, Outlook 2010 eliminated the Group Schedule list and now adds the group members' calendars to the navigation pane in navigation pane groups. When you want to view a group, select the checkbox beside the group name to view the calendars in the new horizontal schedule view. Once you've decided on a meeting date, you can easily setup a meeting with the group using the New Meeting with All command. I'm not a big fan of the new group schedule feature.

Outweighing the positive features of the new method, are its faults: it clutters the navigation pane with groups and the group schedules are lost if the navigation pane is corrupt. Losing the groups if the navigation pane is corrupt is not acceptable and a separate group schedule utility is needed.

Now a new issue has come to my attention: you can't share group schedules with other users.

With the old group scheduler, an Exchange administrator or a user with Owner permissions on a public folder calendar could create group schedules in the public calendar. Anyone with permission to the public folder could access the groups using the Actions, View Group Schedules command while viewing that public folder. It was a quick and easy way to share groups with other users. After upgrading to Outlook 2010, these group schedules are inaccessible.

Correction: Calendar Printing Assistant - 32-bit Only

In last week's issue of EMO, I said that the Calendar Printing Assistant works with Outlook 2010 64-bit. This is wrong. It works with 32-bit Outlook only.

The KB article does not (currently) say it's 32-bit only and it installs on computers with 64-bit Outlook installed. You can print calendars, but it will not include appointments from 64-bit Outlook.

When you first open the CPAO, you should receive this error message:
Error message: Cannot connect to Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. Please restart Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Calendar Printing Assistant. Original Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 error message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Note that all dialogs mention Outlook 2007, but its also for Outlook 2010 (32-bit).

Should you install Office 2010 32- or 64-bit?
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2010/64bit.asp
The 32-bit version of Office 2010 is the recommended option for most users, because it prevents potential compatibility issues with other 32-bit applications, specifically third-party add-ins that are available only for 32-bit operating systems

OSC: Synchronizing Friends and Activities

This article explains how the Outlook Social Connector synchronizes friends, non-friends, and activities for friends and non-friends in different ways: cached synchronization, on-demand synchronization, and hybrid synchronization. The main difference among these modes of synchronization is where the OSC stores the data—whether it is in a folder in the user’s default Outlook store, or in memory on the user’s computer.
