› Problems › Common Outlook Outgoing Server (SMTP) Errors

Last reviewed on February 13, 2018     177 Comments

When you are checking for new mail you might receive one of the following errors.

Tip: In many cases error codes are identical between Outlook and Outlook Express. If you search Bing for an error code and find a site which discusses Outlook Express, check it out. Because Outlook and Outlook Express both use the same underlying technology, the cause and the solution may be the same for Outlook.

Error Codes

#5.5.0 smtp;553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)
This means the server you are trying to send to is blocking mail sent from your server. You'll need to contact the recipient's administrator or send your message using a different mail server.

553 5.7.1 Sender address rejected: not owned by user
This means you are not using the correct outgoing (SMTP) server authentication settings.
In Outlook 2007, go to Tools, Accounts Settings. In Outlook 2010 and 2013, go to File, Account Settings. Double click on the email account then click More Settings. Select Outgoing Server tab. Select Log on using and enter the username and password that can send using this SMTP server. Enable SPA only if your server supports it.

Mail server errors

Task - Sending reported error (0x80042109) : Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server.
Check your outgoing server name, the port number and SSL setting, and the authentication setting. Open the Account Settings dialog, double click on the affected email account. Is the server name correct? Click the More Settings button. Check the authentication settings on the Outgoing server tab, and the port number and SSL settings on the Advanced tab.

Error 0x800CCC0F when sending or receiving email.
Usually caused by Antivirus software scanning email, but antispam scanners may cause Outlook to return this error as well. Disable the email scanning or increase the timeout setting. Also, make sure your firewall is allowing the scanner software to connect to the Internet.

Error 0x800CCC7D when sending email
This error code means you have SSL enabled and your mail server doesn't support SSL. Disable SSL in Tools, Email Accounts, double click on the account, More Settings, Advanced tab. The error message may say that it's a Secure Sockets Layer error.

Error 0x800CCC78 when sending
Verify the address you have entered in the From field is correct. Make sure there are no leading or ending spaces or other simple to overlook typos in your address. Verify sending authentication is correct in the Outgoing server tab of the More Settings dialog.

Error 0x80040119 when sending
"0x80040119" and "Unknown error" error messages when you try to read, send, receive, or delete e-mail in Outlook (814441) Disable the application accessing Outlook's data and restart Outlook. You may need to reboot the computer before Outlook will send.

Error 0x80042108 when receiving messages.
There are a couple of causes for this error. You may have SSL enabled and don't need it or you are running Norton Personal Firewall 2002 or Norton Internet Security software.

Error 0x8004010F when attempting to send and receive
This error is either the result of a corrupt delivery folder setting (POP3, message says Outlook data file cannot be accessed) or a missing or corrupt offline address book (Exchange server mailbox).

you need to check your account and port settings. Typically, you need to use SMTP port 587 for the Outgoing Server and encryption as TLS. Check the Outgoing server tab and set it to My Outgoing Server requires Authentication option. Both of these are in Account settings under more Settings.

Do you have the correct SMTP port and SSL/TLS setting? Also check the Outgoing Server settings, many servers require you to enable the My Outgoing Server requires Authentication option on the Outgoing Server tab.

that is an old hosted domain on outlook.com? Is it still reporting errors? If so, how long has it been down?

Please help me! I have no idea why, but whenever I try to send a message from my outlook account, it won't send and I immediately get an email back from the System Administrator saying that my message "did not reach some or all of the intended recipients" AND "This message could not be sent. Try sending the message again later, or contact your network administrator. The client operation failed. Error is [0x80004005-0x000b22-0x000501]."

I have spent hours online trying to figure out why this is happening suddenly for no reason and how to fix it. No luck so far.

And the WEIRDEST part of all this is that I have 2 hotmail accounts set up under the same profile in my outlook 2010 - and this only happens with one of them, At this very moment, one account will send just fine - and one won't. Makes no sense. PLEASE HELP ME. :(

Also please note that i am NOT a techy person so any answers need to be in layman terms or explained simply. Thanks so much!

If you are on exchange server, ask the admin to look into it - the exchange logs will show if it was handed off to Google. If so, the problem is on their end. An aggressive spam filter would be my guess in that case.
