New Outlook Pre: Send & Receive

Microsoft pushed Outlook Pre on a lot of users and it generated questions. The two I saw the most were how to get back to the good Outlook and "where is the send / receive button?"

Outlook Pre (aka new Outlook) does not have a send receive button because it doesn't need it. At this time runs in "online only" mode – there is no offline cache – and mail is sent as soon as you hit the Send button and new mail shows up when it hits the mailbox, just like it does when you use Outlook on the web…. because Outlook Pre is Outlook on the web in an app shell.

At some point in the future, offline cache may be added, so it's possible a Send and Receive function will be added, but until then, if you want to send a message later, you'll need to wait to use the Send later function on the Send button and select a time to send it. Note: The Send Later option is only available for Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 mailboxes.

Only Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 accounts, plus Gmail, are supported in Outlook Pre. Support for Yahoo and iCloud accounts will be "coming soon", with support for other IMAP accounts added later.

If your Outlook was switched to Outlook Pre and you do not have a switch for "Try the new Outlook" to turn it off, type Outlook on the start menu. Are two Outlook apps found? Open the one that does not have "Pre" on the icon and has a list of shortcuts for new Outlook items – New Email message, New appointment, Mew Meeting, New Contact, New Task - listed under it. Outlook Pre offers only New Message and New Event.

If you don’t have the slider to turn off the new Outlook and can’t find both Outlook's on your Start menu, you need to find Outlook.exe. It's under Program Files (or Program Files (x86)) at C:\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\OUTLOOK.EXE. Double click to run it then pin it to your Taskbar or start menu.

You can use both Outlooks and can have both open at the same time.

If you want to disable the option "Try the new Outlook", you need to set this registry key:

DWORD: HideNewOutlookToggle
Value: 1

Email opens in browser with web links

Microsoft released a new feature for Outlook for Windows and Edge browser and a lot of users do not like it. This new feature opens email links in Edge with the original email in a panel to the right of the page. This allows you to view the message while looking at the link and respond.

This works with Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 Work or School accounts, but you need to be signed into the browser using the same account for the email message to load in the side panel.

You can turn this feature off in Edge Settings. Search for sidebar in Edge settings, click on Outlook and move the slider for Automatically open Outlook email context in the side pane to off.

While links will open in Edge, it does not change your default browser settings. Microsoft 365 subscribers can choose whether to use Edge or the default browser for links in File > Options > Advanced. Look for "Open hyperlinks from Outlook in" menu.

Outlook on the web and received time

A user complained that Outlook on the web only shows the received time for her emails. This is intentional, to provide a cleaner interface, and the format varies depending on how long ago the message arrived.

For messages received today, Outlook on the web displays just the received time. For previous days this week, it includes the day name and time – "Mon 3:15 PM". For the remaining 30 days past, it shows the day name and date: "Tue 5/2". For all messages older than 30 days, Outlook uses the received date: "3/15/2023".

Regardless of what you see in the message list, the message header shows the full date and received time: " Thu 5/18/2023 4:06 PM"

You can choose the time and date format Outlook Settings > General > Language and Time, although your options are limited to a few predefined short date formats.

You can change the date format in Outlook on the web's Settings (gear icon) > View all Outlook settings > General > Time and Language.

Does the original sender know?

Inquiring minds wanted to know: If you receive an email, then forward it to other people and then reply to the original sender, will they know you forwarded the message?

No. While all of the messages will appear in the conversation in your mailbox, the original recipient will only see your reply to the message.
