Immersive Reader in Outlook
Office 365 has an option to use an Immersive reader view. This centers the text on the page and allows you to use wider spacing on the text and or use Syllables, which splits the words into syllables (helpful for students or learning a second language).
The immersive reader can be used when you are reading or composing messages. When it’s turned on, some incoming messages will use the immersive reader. The Immersive button on the right end of the Message tab (of an open message) will turn it on; turn it off by clicking the button again or click the Close button on the Immersive Reader tab. In the main Outlook window, turn the Immersive Reader on from the View tab, it’s on the far right side of the ribbon.
While it can help you focus on the text, if it is turned on accidently and you don’t know what it is or how to turn it off, it’s more annoying than helpful.
I had a couple of users who had no idea what they did to change the look of their email. The first user tried to explain it as dots between all of the words, which made me think formatting marked were turned on (Ctrl + Shift + 8 to toggle them off and on). He said that just added more dots between the words. I asked for a screenshot. The screenshot “spoke 1000 words” and I saw Immersive Reader tab was visible. When another user asked about his weird looking email a few days later, Immersive reader was my first thought.
Neither user recalls enabling the Immersive view, and neither noticed the Immersive Reader tab that is visible (with blue text) when it’s enabled.
Immersive reader is available in Word, OneNote, Outlook, Teams, Edge, and more.
New Outlook for Mac is the default
Microsoft has been working on a new Outlook client for Mac and gave users the option of turning the new experience on, going forward (beginning in mod-February), the new Outlook will be the default and users will need to turn it off to use the classic Outlook. To revert back to the classic version, the command to revert back will be on the Help menu > Revert to Legacy Outlook. (It’s currently on the Outlook menu > New Outlook.)

New phishing scam warning
There are some new phishing scams going around.
Two I received this week:
The first one says your password is expiring today. It looks believable (if you ignore the From address), except Microsoft doesn’t send out notifications – they warn you for a few days when you log in and will make you change your password if it expired.
The second one says there was unusual activity on your account and asks you to click a link to say it wasn’t you. Microsoft will send emails if they think there is unusual activity on your account, from a Microsoft address, account-security-noreply@accountprotection.microsoft.com. You can check account activity on your own by going to https://account.live.com/Activity
