Email is missing or found in IPM_Subtree
I’m not sure what is going on, whether people are changing their rules accidently or Outlook/Outlook.com is doing it, but several people needed my help finding missing email and discovered their rules were messed up.
The complaint goes something like this: My email is not in my Inbox. When I search for them, they are found in a folder called IPM_Subtree.
IPM_Subtree (or Top of Information Store) is the top-level folder in the data file, where the Outlook Today home page is normally shown. The messages got there one of two ways: you've somehow dragged them into that folder or have a rule mistakenly moving mail there.
Recovering the email is not difficult; it does not require the use of any 3rd party programs or MFCMAPI (contrary to some information floating around the Internet). Simply disable Outlook Today, select all, then use the Move to command to move them back to the Inbox, then turn Outlook Today back on.
Before moving the mail back to the Inbox, check your rules and make sure any that are moving mail are moving the messages to the expected folder.
To turn off Outlook Today and move the messages:
- Right click on the folder in the Navigation pane and choose Properties (or Data File Properties).
- On the Properties dialog, select the Home page tab
- Untick ‘Show home page by default for this folder’.
- Click Ok to close the dialog.
- Select all the messages (Ctrl+A)
- Open the Move to common (Ctrl+Shift+V) and select your Inbox.
- Repeat steps 1 -3, ticking ‘Show home page..’ to re-enable Outlook Today.
Back in the early days of Outlook, many users used that location to store (or hide) messages. While you can still do that, don’t forget where they are or how to access them.

Use Automatic name checking instead of Autocomplete
An Outlook user wanted to know if there was a way to enable autocomplete, address by address, so Outlook would save in autocomplete only the contacts he said OK to. He also asked if marking a contact Private would be a work around.
I want several of my contacts to be in the autocomplete but not all of them.
Well, it’s not possible to pick and choose which contacts go into autocomplete and marking them as private will only hide them from co-workers you’ve shared your contacts with. To the best of my knowledge, autocomplete is not exposed in the object model, so you can't use a macro to clear names either.
If everyone whose address you need is already in your contacts, you can turn off autocomplete and use automatic name checking (autoresolve) to address email. After typing a name or partial name in the address field, auto resolve will run within a few seconds or after you tab out of the field. If Outlook finds a match in your contacts, the name is underlined; if there are multiple matches, it marks the address with a red squiggly line. Right click to select the correct contact.
If you don’t want to wait for Outlook to resolve the name, you can use Alt+K to resolve addresses immediately (Ctrl+K also works, if you are in the To/CC/BCC fields.)
To disable autocomplete and check your automatic name check settings, open File, Options, Mail. In the Send messages section near the bottom, ‘Automatic name checking’ should be ticked and ‘Use autocomplete list to suggest names…’ should be clear. If you don’t enable automatic name checking, you can use Alt+K to trigger it before sending, or Outlook will check the names when you send the message.
There are some things you need to keep in mind about auto resolve:
If you have more than one Contacts folder, Outlook will stop looking in additional Contacts folders once it finds a match in one (it will find all matches in that folder). If you have 3 Contacts folder and 2 David's in the first Contacts folder, Outlook will show you those two and will not look in the other Contacts folders.
For best results, type enough of the full name to be unique. Using the David example, after you match 'david' to a specific contact, Outlook may automatically resolve 'david' to that contact.

Join the Outlook.com beta
If you haven’t yet had your fill of Microsoft betas, also known as Insider builds, and use the Outlook.com website, you might want to join the Outlook.com beta. This is an opt-in web experience, giving end-users the ability to try out “new product innovations” and share your experience with the Outlook.com product team.
If you want to be on the cutting edge (or are a glutton for punishment), click the ‘Try the beta’ toggle switch when it shows up in the top right corner of your Outlook.com Inbox. It’s rolling out in waves and if its not there now, it will be within a few weeks.
If you don’t like the new design, you can switch back to the regular web site at any time.
BTW, I’m just kidding about being a glutton for punishment. The features they enable for beta users will be solid. it’s down to whether you want to see the new features ahead of everyone else or hate change and want to keep the old stuff around as long as possible.

New: PST Collection Tool
PST Collection Tool from Microsoft is the successor to the PST Capture tool. In addition to helping administrators collect PST files in their network, it can also lock down their usage.
The PST Collection tool will search your organization's network for PST files. After you find PST files, the PST Collection tool can copy them to a central location, ostensibly for import into Office 365 Exchange online. It can import the PSTs into users' regular or archive mailbox or a single Office 365 mailbox.
When it’s done importing, you can use it to delete the PST files from their original location on your network. You can also prevent users from creating new PST files and changing the existing PST files that you find on your network. These "block" capabilities let you find, collect, and import a known set of PST files to Office 365 and prevent the future proliferation of PST files in your organization.
