After update Office, every time you open Outlook, you receive an error message:
Something is wrong with one of your data files and Outlook needs to close. Outlook might be able to fix your file. Click OK to run the Inbox Repair Tool.
The Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST) opens, appears to complete the file repair and yet, the error message won't go away.

If you see this message once, it's likely the data file needs repaired. If it comes up multiple times in a row, it may be a bug in Office Version 2005 Build 12827.20268 or higher.
Microsoft has a registry fix available for the bug
- Open the Registry editor by right-clicking on the Windows Start button and choosing Run or press Windows key + R to open the Run command.
- Type Regedit and press Enter
- Navigate to the registry path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\PST

Tip: You can copy the link and paste it in the address field at the top of the registry editor. - Right click on and delete these two registry values, if they exist:
LastCorruptStore
PromptRepair - Restart Outlook
If you don't want to edit the registry yourself, you can download and run this .reg file to delete the two values

Hi Diane,
Am having this issue where I have deleted the 2 registry keys mentioned above and each time I restart outlook, I get the error message saying something is wrong with outlook. When I check the registry, the 2 keys deleted are back (LastCorruptStore and Prompt repair keys). I have changed the value for Promptrepair from 1 to 0 but still I keep having the same issue. Am not sure why they keep appearing back in the registry and stopping outlook from opening smoothly. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Outlook will add them if it detects a corrupt store.
do you have all updates installed? This bug was fixed.
Do you get an error message?
Khalid says
Yes the error message says "something is wrong with one of your data files and outlook need to close..." How do I resolve the corrupt store if it's detecting one?
Thanks.
Khalid says
I forgot to mention that I have installed all updates.
Thanks.

Hi Diane,
Am following up with my last post and will like to ask if I can delete an old outlook archive that the repair tool normally points to when it comes up? Please advice.
Thanks.
RanV says
After deleting the registry values and restarting outlook a few times the registry values popped back up and the error continued reappearing. What fixed that for me was changing the PromptRepair value from 1 to 0.

Finally this works! There was only the LastCorrupStore in my folder and after removing it I also made a new outlook profile and after that OULOOK started again. I tried so much other step also the official Microsoft recommended step, remove, install office and so on...

If the key does not exist, you need to add it.
Si la clave no existe, debe agregarla.

Hello Ms. Diane - I think I did something stupid - I bought a new computer, and was trying to backup my outlook pst. file from my old computer to the new computer. I pasted the old outlook pst file on my new computer, but instead of importing it thru Outlook, I simply tried to open it in Outlook. Now, everytime I try to open Outlook, I get the "something is wrong with one of your data files" error and I can't get past it. Will this fix work for that, or is there something else I can do to get past this error message?
Diane Poremsky says
if your problem is caused by the bug, it will work.

I was able to update to 12827.20470 but I still receive the same "something went wrong..". I then edited the registry and only found the only the one file LastCorruptStore which I deleted. I tried to open Outlook and it started but stoped with "processing" running continuously. I rebooted the computer. I then tried starting in outlook.exe /safe and resulted in being hung at "processing" again. I x out of Outlook processing. Tried opening Outlook again and first screen had the opportunity to select Outlook as profile. Next screen The file
C:\Users\jbowl\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\jbowler60@hotmail.com.ost cannot be opened.
Next screen Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened.
Thank you, Jim

Try renaming the ost file and restarting outlook - does it work ?

Hi, First of all, Thank you. I trying the above-mentioned steps and it's work for me. But when I restart the Ms. Outlook the message will come again. Please suggest.
Diane Poremsky says
Did you run scanpst on it the first time? I'm not sure its necessary if its the bug, but try it. (I'm checking with support contacts also.)
Diane Poremsky says
check for updates - I'm told this was fixed in Current yesterday; Build 12827.20470
Thomas Franz says
Does this only affect clients which have a PST file as default location for incoming mails, or are OST profiles with attached PSTs also affected?
Diane Poremsky says
This bug can affect any data file - ost or pst. If the message comes up over and over, then it's definitely the bug.

Thanks Diane, i am applying this fix and it works for a few minutes but the registry values continue to come back after a few minutes and outlook breaks again. Something is causing the registry values to be re-written. urhg !!
