- Recovering an old Outlook.com account
I'm Sorry!
I apologize for sending last week's newsletter out last evening. I have a process I use for a test send then make a copy and send it to everyone. The test send looked good, so I made a copy... but mistakenly made a copy of the wrong file, did not notice the subject line and set it to send later.
I have macros to prevent me from sending some emails to the wrong address, but unfortunately don't have a macro to prevent me from sending the wrong newsletter or reminding me to verify the subject line!
I have a spare Office 365 subscription and drew a name from the current subscribers - Tammy B. is the lucky winner of this "apology tour" subscription.
Again, I apologize.
Outlook Search: Top Results
Outlook has a new search feature called “Top Results”. With each search, Outlook shows the 3 items it thinks are the best match to what you are searching for. Needless to say, it gets it wrong - a lot - only rarely is one of the top results the messages I was looking for. It often thinks 3 year old messages belong in the top result, even though I’m looking for a current message.
Fortunately, you can disable Top Results in Search Options.
In Outlook desktop: go to File > Options > Search and uncheck “Show most relevant search results on top”
In Outlook on the web, open Settings (gear icon) > View all Outlook settings > Search. Choose the option to not show top results.
What you can't yet disable is the search feature that changes a search to a Mailbox search when you do a This folder search and nothing is found. A notice above the results says "Showing results from all folders. No results found in current folder.".
Error code 0x8004010F on Send and Receive
When you move or change a pst file, you may receive error code 0x8004010F when Outlook is trying to send and receive. This occurs because the account’s default delivery location changed.
Task 'your address - Sending' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'Outlook data file cannot be accessed.'
Task 'our address - Receiving' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'Outlook data file cannot be accessed.'
To fix it, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings. Select the account and click Change Folder at the bottom of the dialog. Select a folder (any folder will do) and click Ok. Go open the dialog again and choose the Inbox.

Recovering an old Outlook.com account
Multiple times a day a user will ask how to recover their Outlook.com account.
I can't access my account, which I made so many years ago, I CANT remember ANY
of my security questions because it was that long ago.
Unfortunately, the only way to recover accounts that you have not logged into in years is with the password. That is assuming the account is still open.
If you don't log in at least once a year, the mailbox is inactive and purged and the only way to recover it is if you have the password. You cannot reset the password if the mailbox was purged. Microsoft support can’t reset your password. (This applies to OneDrive too - so be sure to log in at least yearly if you are using it to store files.)
If you haven't accessed the Microsoft account in more than 2 years, it will be deleted (closed for good). Once closed, addresses cannot be claimed or reclaimed, or otherwise reopened. The exact time period for closure varies based on the age of the account and when the last log in was. Older accounts are closed after 5 years of no activity.
There are some exceptions to the closure rule: if you have Microsoft store purchases on the account or it’s a parent’s
account. For details see Microsoft account activity policy
