Outlook's "Not Junk" option greyed out
A user complained about a problem with Outlook's junk mail filter: many valid messages were being moved to the folder. When the user tried to whitelist the addresses by marking the message as 'not junk', the option was disabled.
Since upgrading to Office 365 on my desktop, Outlook started putting email from people I frequently email with to the spam or junk folder. When I go to mark it as "not junk" the option is greyed out.
The most obvious reason for the option to be grayed out: you are not looking at a message in the Junk Email folder Outlook created. That option is only enabled if you are in the Junk Email folder, its not available in Spam, Inbox, or other folders.
If you have a folder named Spam, it was created by an antispam addin or is the folder your IMAP server uses for junk mail. The option to mark as not junk will not be enabled in that folder. You'll need to whitelist addresses using the steps supported by the utility or service.
If you have two folders named Junk Email or a second folder named Junk E-mail, only the folder Outlook 2016 created and uses for junk email will have the 'not junk' option enabled. If you look at the folder list (Ctrl+6) , the Junk Email folder will have a icon with the red 'no' symbol over it. If the folder uses a plain yellow folder icon, its not the folder Outlook uses for junk mail.
Confirm that Outlook’s Junk email filter is moving the messages to the Junk Email folder. To do this, select a message in the Junk Email folder and look at the InfoBar under the subject. Does it say Outlook’s Junk mail filter moved the message? If it says that another program moved the message, adding the address to the safe senders list may or may not solve the problem. Some utilities will use Outlook's Safe senders list; others use their own list.
Unfortunately, the InfoBar won’t tell you what program moved the messages into the folder, only that it wasn’t Outlook. More information and screenshots of the InfoBar are available at What Moved a Message to the Junk E-mail Folder?
One step you’ll want to take to reduce the incidences of false-positives: In Junk Email, Junk Email Options, open the Safe Senders tab. Make sure you have the option enabled to trust your contacts.
One final note: If your email server supports spam filtering, it generally better to configure filtering on the server and set Outlook’s junk filtering to Low. As time goes on, this will be much more accurate as Microsoft stopped releasing filter updates for Outlook at the end of 2016.
Show all Mondays in the Calendar
A user wanted to know if it was possible to create a view with all Mondays in Outlook’s Calendar.
Yes, you can view all Mondays, or all Tuesdays, or Wednesdays… or a mix of non-contiguous dates in the Day view. You won’t be able save the view and are limited to 14 dates.
If you plan to select dates that span more than one month, adjust the navigation pane to display more thumbnail calendars. Then hold Ctrl down as you click on each date in the thumbnail calendars. Hold Ctrl+Shift as you click to add adjoining dates to the view by clicking on the first date then on the last.
Unfortunately, this view is not persistent. If you need to refer to it frequently, open the calendar in a separate window before selecting the dates.
Tip: if you need to view up to the next 10 days, press Alt+n, where n is between the 1 and 0 on your keyboard to automatically select that number of days (0 = 10 days). You'll need to use the number row, it doesn't work with the numeric keypad.
Update: Emails not shown in the People Pane
As I reported last fall, Windows10 Fall Creators Update (1709) broke the people pane’s ability to display other messages and attachments from a sender or recipient when a message was selected.
This is fixed, as of Windows 10 build 1803. This was made available to Windows Insiders in December and is expected to be released to the general public within the next several weeks.
Emails are not shown in the People Pane (Fixed)
Update: Dual Time Zones in Outlook for Mac
It wasn’t too long ago when an Outlook for Mac user asked how to display dual time zones in Outlook. At that time the answer was “it’s not currently possible”. It’s now possible, as of the update to 16.11 (180311) for Office 365 for Mac subscribers.
If you’re used to how easy it is to swap time zones in Outlook for Windows, it will feel “clunky” as you can’t easily swap time zones from Outlook. You’ll need to change the time zone on the Mac then change the second zone in Outlook.
Will it be available to perpetual licenses? No, not in Outlook 2016.
