ReliefJet Essentials for Outlook is a set of more than 160 tools for performing a wide range of tasks in Outlook: processing email messages, contacts, appointments, meetings, tasks and other Outlook items.
Today's Highlights:
- Less Secure Login Warning
- Outlook 2010 links won't open in Windows 10
- Searching Contacts in Multiple Exchange Accounts
- Contest: Office 365 Home Subscriptions
Less Secure Login Warning
Gmail, Yahoo and other email providers switched to OAuth 2 and turned Basic Authentication off by default. When you attempt to add the account to Outlook, you are unable to authenticate because Outlook uses Basic Auth, not OAuth 2. When you log into the website to enable basic authentication, you are warned that it is a less secure login.
I use Outlook 2016 to access Yahoo email, using POP3. Recently Yahoo tells me this is a "less secure logon". If I change the Yahoo setting to not use less-secure, then Outlook will not connect to yahoo email. Does this mean Microsoft Outlook 2016 is quite secure? Or is Yahoo saying not to use Outlook?
Yahoo, like most webmail providers, would like you to use their web interface so they can show you ads, but they are not saying not to use Outlook (or other email clients), only warning you that the basic authentication method is not as secure as OAuth2. Once you are authenticated, you'll use SSL/TLS to send and receive mail.
If you enable multifactor authentication, you should be able to leave the the 'less secure login' setting disabled but you will need to use an app password in Outlook. I recommend doing this instead of enabling less secure logins.
Outlook 2010 links won't open in Windows 10
It looks like Santa put a lot of Windows 10 computers under the tree but he forgot to include licenses for Office 365 software subscriptions, so users are installing their copy of Office 2010 on the new computer and quickly discover one long standing issue: links don't open a browser window if IE is set as the default browser. Instead, the user receives file browser dialog titled Locate Link Browser and need to select IE. This dialog comes up for every link they click.
While Outlook 2010 still has some life left in it, especially for non-commercial users, and I'm not one to recommend upgrading just because new software came out, I do recommend upgrading to the latest Office software when you get a new computer. The newer software is designed to work with the newest OS and you'll have fewer problems such as this.
If upgrading is not possible, the fix is simple: add a value to the registry. The keys you need to add won't display properly in the newsletter and can be found at Outlook Links Won't Open In Windows 10, where i also have I have ready-to-use .reg files if you don't want to edit the registry yourself.
Searching for Contacts in multiple Exchange Accounts
An Outlook user with two Exchange accounts in his profile had a question about searching for contacts.
When I use Find a Contact and click on a contact how I can I determine which Exchange account the contact is in? I see the In folder field but it does not tell me which Exchange Account the contact is in.
There are a couple of ways to find out which folder a contact is in, depending on how you search. Using the Find a Contact (Search People in new versions), you would open the contact and press Ctrl+Shift+F to open Advanced Find. Click the Browse button - the Contacts folder the item is in will be checked and visible.
If you use Instant Search in the Contacts folder, add the Outlook Data File field to the view. This will list the account name.
If you used Outlook 2013 or 2016, the contact cards list the folder and account name. I'm not a fan of the contact cards but the link the contact with the folder and account names is one of the few things I like about the cards.
Contest: Office 365 Home Subscriptions
Reminder: I have 5 Office 365 Home subscriptions and 2 Office 365 Personal subscriptions to give away. The requirements to enter are easy: send an email to dec2016@slipstick.com to enter. I'll draw names at the end of January 2017.
Office 365 Home is the consumer subscription with 5 Office desktop licenses for anyone in your household. It includes licenses for Office apps on smartphone and tablets, 1TB OneDrive, and 60 Skype minutes. Office 365 Personal a license for one computer and 1 tablet or smartphone plus includes the expanded OneDrive and Skype minutes.
If you have a subscription for Office 365 consumer software and win, the key can be applied to your account immediately to extend your subscription for 1 year from your current expiration date.
More information on Office 365 Home subscriptions is at Office 365 Home.

Outlook Links Won't Open In Windows 10
Users with 32-bit versions of Office 2010, plus Outlook 2007, and Outlook 2003 installed on Windows 10 are unable to open hyperlinks in email after installing Windows 10. In most cases, the user sees a Locate Link Browser window, while one Outlook 2003 user reported that Internet Explorer opened to the site's home page.
