Today's Highlights »

  • Is it legit? Microsoft Account Closure Email
  • Outlook on the web address bug
  • Change fonts in Message list

Exchange Messaging Outlook's summer break: during the summer months I send the newsletter out every other week, unless something major comes up. In most years, this is June through August, but due to helping elderly family members (and a much needed vacation in late May) I started the summer break early this year.

Is it legit? Microsoft Account Closure Email

Did you receive an email from Microsoft that your account was going to be closed and wonder if the message was real or a phishing attempt?

Yes, it might be real, especially if you haven't logged into the account in 2 years. But hackers will also send these emails, in a phishing attempt to get your log in details. To be safe, when you get a message do not click the link in the message. Open the browser and go to account.microsoft.com. I recommend using a private browser window, so you don't log into the wrong account (that is not being closed.)

You can ignore the message and let the account close, but if you are using it as a recovery address for a web site or service, you won't be able recover the account once it is closed. Once an account or address is deleted, it can never be used again.

Below is the message I received. The email address is in the form of ab***c@, so you may not remember what the actual address was.

My first thought was the address was the account a family member uses to log into their computer and suspected the message was a phishing attempt but when I checked the address on that computer, the second letter was different. I tried logging into account.microsoft.com using variations of their name and one address worked. It was an address I created for testing and forgot about. I don't use it or need it, but it was a good opportunity to get screenshots, because users often ask if the message is real.

Microsoft account
Your account is set to close on 6/30/2023
Dear Diane,
Your account ab**c@outlook.com is scheduled to be closed on 6/30/2023 due to account inactivity. Once your account is closed it will be deleted in accordance with the Microsoft Services Agreement.
If you want to keep your account, just sign in between now and 6/30/2023. All your files, data and info will be just as you left them until then.

Thanks,
The Microsoft account team

I opened a private browser window and typed account.microsoft.com in the address bar then tried to log in, finally successful with the third password I tried. After sending a text to my phone to prove I was a real person, the account was reopened.

Outlook on the web address bug

Users are reporting a bug in Outlook on the web: when they try to address as message, they cannot type in the to, CC, or BCC field.

I'm only able to reproduce the issue when I search for a contact in Outlook on the web on my MacBook. I'm unable to select from the search results. The auto complete list works, and the found contact is listed in it when I click off the search results. Otherwise, I can add recipients from the autocomplete without issue.

If you are affected by this bug, one user discovered if they open the compose windows in a new window, they can add recipients. Click the "Open in new window" icon on the top right of the message, next to the trash can (Discard button). While another user found it works as expected in Chrome browser.

Change fonts in Message list

Are the fonts in Outlook's interface too small? While you can't change the size of the font used on the folder list within Outlook, you can change the font and font sizes on the message list and message preview, as well as set a zoom level in the reading pane.

To change the message list and message preview fonts and / or font size, select the View tab, then View Settings to open the Advanced View Settings. Message list and message preview fonts are under Other Settings. To change the font settings for the subject and sender lines in the message list, change the Row font at the top. The Message preview font is in the middle of the dialog.

If you only want to change the fonts for specific messages, edit existing rules or create new rules under Conditional Formatting on the Advanced View dialog.

To change the zoom level of the reading pane in Outlook, move the slider on the right of the status bar (under the To-Do bar, if it is enabled) to adjust the zoom level of the current message or when composing a reply. If you want to set a default zoom level, click on the % value when reading a message to open the Zoom While Reading dialog. After setting the zoom level you prefer, check the box to "Remember my preference". Note: only newer versions of Outlook support saving the zoom preference when reading messages.

If you need larger fonts for the folder names, you'll need to change the Windows scale or display percentage, which will affect all Windows applications. To change it, open Windows Settings dialog and search for Display settings then change the scale percentage.
