You can no longer choose or change the folder used by the Archive button.
This question is from a reader who uses Outlook on the web (OWA)'s Archive feature to quickly file email when using the web interface. This will also work for Outlook.com accounts hosted on Office 365 infrastructure. Note: as of April 2016, the Archive button is also in Outlook 2016 and it includes the ability to change the folder (File, Tools).
Is there any way to change the destination folder of the one-click archive button on the web version of Office 365? I create a new 'archive' folder under my Inbox for each year, and I can't see a way to reflect that!
If you use Outlook 2016, you can change the Archive folder in File, Tools, Set Archive folder. It takes about 15 minutes for the folder change to sync back to the server.
You can try renaming the current archive folder (it worked for me, once) but if that fails, youâll need to delete the current folder. Clicking Archive will then bring up the select archive folder dialog.
After you select a new folder, move the original folder out of Deleted Items. To move the folder out of deleted items, click More > to expand the folder list. Expand the Deleted Items folder then right click on the older archive folder and choose Move.
If all else fails, make a new folder and move the archived items into it, keeping the current folder for this year. (This is easier if you can use Outlook desktop to move the messages.)
More Information
Outlook desktop users don't have an Archive button but the can configure Quick Steps to file messages to an archive folder. For more information, see "Using Outlook's Quick Steps".
Hi,
I use outlook live and my archive folder is named differently, something random I did years ago, but I now dont have the option to rename it back to archive. Neither do have the option to delete the folder, so i can set up anotherone. Do you have any ideas of how i can rename it back to archive please?
How do I remove this archive button altogether?
At this time, you need to edit the ribbon. I'm hoping that they will address that problem in a future update. See https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/outlook-2016s-archive-button/ for the steps.
You can select a new Archive folder at any time (or look to see what folder you have set as the archive folder) from the File menu. Click Tools then Set Archive Folder.
Great timing, I was wondering this myself. Thank you.
