Outlook closed while you had items open
There are not a lot of new things to report this week, but there is one bug affecting Outlook 2019 and Outlook 2021 users: Outlook is displaying a dialog "Outlook closed while you had items open. Reopen those items from your last session?" when it is restarted.
This feature was added to Microsoft 365 subscriptions last year, with the option to choose to always reopen the items, never reopen the items, or always ask.
This appeared after installing updates to version 2306. Outlook has the "Start Up Options" section header in File > Options > General but not the menu containing the options for always, never or ask in the section.
The dialog should stop coming up for good after you restart Outlook a few times, but if not, you can try setting this registry key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences
DWORD: ReopenWindowsOption
Value: 1
iCloud Calendar not Syncing Bug
I'm seeing a number of users complain that the iCloud addin for Outlook is not syncing the Calendar. The affected users are using iCloud installed from the Windows Store. The addin is enabled in File > Options > Addins and the usual fix of signing out of iCloud control panel and signing back in does not fix it.
Installing the older iCloud downloaded from Apple solves the problem for most people. Get it here:
iCloudSetup.exe from Apple
If you are affected by this bug, and decide to use the older version, you need to uninstall iCloud before installing the other version – if both are installed iCloud is buggy. While Microsoft and Apple recommend the store app for Windows 10 and 11, the older version will work in both operating systems.
The New To-Do app in Outlook
When you have the new left navigation bar in Outlook and have an Exchange online account (either Outlook.com or work or School) in your Outlook Profile, you'll have a blue checkmark icon in the navigation bar to open To-Do.
This button opens To-Do inside Outlook, loading it from the To-Do website. (It loads slower than the separate To-Do app for Windows though.)
You can use the new To-Do forms instead of Task forms when you create a new task using the New Items > Tasks command when you are in any folder except Tasks. Enable this option in File > Options > Tasks, add a checkmark to "Open tasks in the To Do app" at the top of the page. You can use either the Tasks or To-Do form to create tasks. When you look at tasks in the Task folders, you'll see the old task form. You'll have the new form when you look at the same tasks in any of the To-Do apps.
Please note: if you are not using an Outlook.com or Microsoft 365 work or School account, you will not have the To-Do app in the navigation bar as the To-Do stores the tasks in a Microsoft Exchange online mailbox.
