Welcome to EMO 2020!
I hope everyone has a save and wonderful holiday season. I know I did. I also know a lot of users received new computers as many needed help setting up Outlook and iCloud. I'm ready to start the 2020 edition of Exchange messaging Outlook. It's hard to believe this is the 25th year of EMO. Sue Mosher published the first issue in April 1996, and Office 97 was released on Nov 19, 1996. It's hard to believe Outlook is 25 years old.
In honor of the 25th anniversary, I'll continue giving away Office 365 Home subscriptions throughout the year. All active subscribers will be entered into each drawing. If you aren't subscribed, you can subscribe here.
Create a sender report in Outlook
A user wanted to create a report of everyone who sent him a message within a specific time frame. Although Outlook doesn’t have a report feature built in, you can use custom views to get the information from Outlook. No VBA required.
Turn off the reading pane. Go to Views > View settings and remove the columns you don’t need and add the columns you do want. Create a filter if you need to restrict it to a specific time period. Then select all, copy and paste into Excel and work with the data using Excel's commands.
If you need the sender’s email address, you’ll need to use a form file (*.cfg). This form will also allow you to add fields showing if you replies or forwarded and the time you replied or forwarded the message. The file you need and instructions are at How to Show the Sender’s Email Address and Reply Time in Outlook
You can use this method to create a list of senders and their addresses, which you can import into Outlook contacts.
Remove the Birthday Calendar from Outlook
Some users with new Outlook.com accounts discovered they have a birthday calendar.
The birthday calendar is a read-only calendar. It gets your contact’s birthdates from your Contacts. If you need to delete birthdays from the calendar, remove the date from the contact.
The Birthday calendar in Outlook.com and Office 365 mailboxes cannot be deleted from Outlook desktop. It will just keep coming back. To remove the Birthday Calendar, you need to go to Outlook.com's settings: Settings (gear icon) > View all Outlook settings > Calendar - and at the bottom of the View page, untick the birthday calendar.
If birthdays are not removed from the calendar when you edit the contact, disable it in the Calendar Settings for at least 24 hours before re-enabling. It will take 24 – 48 hours (or longer) to add all of the birthday events back.
For more information, see Remove the Holiday or Birthday calendar from Outlook.com or Office365
