Custom Domains in Outlook.com Premium: Transfer
This is the first of two changes coming to Outlook.com Premium accounts.
Those of us who got in on the first custom domain program (called Outlook.com Premium) in the new Outlook.com had the option of letting Microsoft register the domain for us. We also did not need an Office 365 software subscription to get the Premium features such as a larger mailbox,
Microsoft is getting out of that business early next year and giving users the opportunity to take full ownership of their domain by transferring the domain to another registrar (GoDaddy is recommended).
If you want to continue using the custom domain for email in Outlook.com, you’ll need an Office 365 Home or Personal subscription.
To take ownership of your domain, log into Outlook.com and click on the diamond icon in the bar, then click “Transfer your domain”. It’s still a little buggy – one of my domains did not have the authcode, a second one doesn’t yet have the transfer button. We have until Jan 15 2020 to transfer the Microsoft-purchased domains to our own registrar.
For more information on the retirement of this Custom Domain program, see Outlook.com Premium is being retired
Outlook Email Connection Encryption Error
Some users are reporting problems connecting to some email servers, receiving this error: (0x800CCC1A) : 'Your server does not support the connection encryption
I’m getting error message 0x800ccc1a. I checked the email settings and they are all correct, but I continue to get this error message: "we couldn't connect to the incoming POP server using the specified encryption method". It’s the same when I try setting it up as IMAP. The problem seemed to start with last Windows 10 update.
Check for this registry key and if it is present, change Enabled to 0. If the key is present, the If present, it is set to 1 by default.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\
SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.3\Client
Enabled = 0
Add Gmail to Outlook.com
The second new feature is Gmail in Outlook, currently available to a subset of Premium users (those with Office 365 subscriptions). It will be rolled out slowly to subscribers.
Instead of adding Gmail account to Outlook.com as a connected account, you can open it in its own “Microsoft Cloud” mailbox, as a second mailbox attached to your Outlook.com account. This is the same process used in Outlook mobile and Outlook for Mac and will sync calendar and contacts. (We’re still waiting for it to come to Outlook on Windows.)
When it is enabled on your account, you’ll see a small box asking if you want to add a Gmail account. If you decide it’s not for you, remove the account in Outlook.com's settings: Settings (gear icon) > View all Outlook settings > Manage Premium > Additional Mailboxes
After you add your Google account, you’ll be able to send email, create appointments, and add contacts with your Gmail account using Outlook.com interface. It’s a two-way sync, so any change you make in the Outlook.com interface will sync over to the Gmail server.
Unlike a connected account, the mailbox will not sync down to Outlook desktop.
Outlook desktop notifications in Window 10
I frequently get questions from users asking how to enable Outlook’s desktop notifications. Because you can do things, such as delete or reply, the are more useful to many people than the simple banners available in Windows 10.
How do I get the previous outlook notifications, the one that has (Delete, Mark as read, reply, etc.) the Windows 10 notifications do not have any options and NOT helpful.
Unfortunately, you can’t get those more users notification banners back.
