Image Preview Security

A user asked how to turn off attachment preview. No, not the option that displays the attachment in the reading pane, and no, he wasn’t asking about blocked external content.

He wanted to disable the thumbnail preview that is used on images attached to email. His main concern was that someone would send him a compromised jpg and the act of previewing it would trigger the payload.

I recently received an email from an unknown address that included an image attachment. For some reason Outlook displays the preview for this image. This concerns me as there is always the possibility that a malicious actor can somehow exploit the image format to execute some code on my machine.

While this is a valid concern, I was assured that the thumbnails are safe – they are too small to host an exploit and reading them doesn’t open the image. In the case of Office 365/Outlook.com mailboxes, the thumbnail is created on the server, not by Outlook.

That’s not to say that allowing users to turn off the thumbnail preview shouldn’t be an option – there are valid reason for not wanting preview – from avoiding offensive images to just reducing the size of the message header view.

If you agree that users should have the ability to turn this feature off, you can vote for the suggestion at UserVoice: Disable image attachment thumbnail previews.

To turn off the ability to view attachments in the reading pane, go to File, Options, Trust Center, and open the Trust Center Settings, then select Attachment Handling. You can turn off Attachment preview to prevent all attachments from being previewed or click on Attachment and Document Previews to allow some files types but not others.

To keep Outlook from downloading images linked in HTML email, you’ll check the Trust Center Setting for Automatic Download. My preference is to not allow any external content (I’ll enable it per message as needed) but you can choose from the available options. Many people allow external content from Safe senders and recipients and domains in the Trusted Security zone in IE’s Internet Settings.

Neither of these settings will prevent embedded images, such as those added to signatures, from displaying.

White sign-in screen in Office 2016 products

I’m seeing more users who are unable to sign into Office 365 email because the sign in screen is completely white and disappears quickly. Some users see the sign in dialog but are unable to enter their password after entering their email address.

In each case, the user had Office 2016 installed on Windows 10. The login problems are related to a change in Outlook, from using Azure Active Directory Authentication Library (ADAL) by default for authentication, to using Web Account Manager (WAM) in newer Windows builds (newer than 15000).

The workaround is to set a registry value to override WAM until a fix is released.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity
DWORD: DisableADALatopWAMOverride
Value: 1

Paste Locations in Outlook.com Appointments

I had a few people ask how to paste a location in appointments in Outlook.com as the right-click Paste option is gone and a recent locations list pop out when they click in the Location field.

The solution: use the keyboard shortcut for paste, Ctrl+V.

Remember: Always try Ctrl+C, Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V when the copy, cut, and paste options are not available on the right-click menu.

Recover an edited email attachment

A user had a made the mistake of editing an attachment in an email, then after she saved and closed the attachment and message, was unable to find the edited copy.

I was editing a Word doc while in an email in my draft Outlook folder. I've searched for the document by name but can't find it. I thought I saved it, but it didn't update my existing document.

There is a good chance that Outlook deleted the file when you closed the draft, but you can check in the folder where Outlook saved attachments that are opened from email, appointments, contacts, and tasks. To find this folder, type shell:cache in the address bar of File Explorer and press enter. Open the folder named Content.Outlook and look in the subfolders.

If you find the missing file, hooray! However, Outlook is very good at clearing up file in the ‘secure temp’ folder and it’s more likely the edited version was deleted you sent or closed the draft message.

RSS Feeds for Microsoft Support Articles

Slowly but surely, RSS feeds for Support articles are returning. At this time, many of the programs on the list are old and long out of support, but Exchange, Windows Server 2016, Windows 10 are among the current applications whose support articles are available via RSS (or ATOM) feeds. Office applications are still missing in action.

The feeds are available at Support content updates
