Fixed: iCloud in Outlook 2007
After the problems with last week’s Outlook update causing problems in Outlook, we got a bit of good news: a fix for the iCloud problems.
Outlook 2007 users can add a DWORD named AllowUnregisteredMapiServices with a value of 1 to the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER| Software| Policies| Microsoft| Office| 12.0| Outlook| Security. Restart Outlook and iCloud will work. If you turned off automatic updates or hid the Outlook update, enable it again and allow it to install.
Workaround for Search problems
The problems with Search caused by the Outlook and Windows updates should be fixed in an update expected next week.
In the meantime, if you don’t want to limit your search scope to the current folder or current mailbox, you can disable Windows search capabilities and fall back to Outlook’s (slower) native search by setting a registry key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE| SOFTWARE| Policies| Microsoft| Windows| Windows Search. Create a new DWORD named PreventIndexingOutlook and set its value to 1.
No word yet on when the custom form problems will be fixed, but I’m expecting that to be fixed “soon” too.
Sharing your Outlook.com Calendar
A client recently decided to switch to Outlook.com and wanted to know how to share a family calendar with his wife (also with a new Outlook.com mailbox).
While you can simply share your personal calendars, if you want to keep the family calendars separate from your own, you can add family members to your Family in your Microsoft account. This will create a shared Family calendar in your Outlook.com mailbox that syncs down to Outlook and smartphones.
To enable the family calendar, go to Microsoft Account > Family and add family members. (The Family calendar is in the process of rolling out and may not be created immediately in all ‘families’ accounts.)
If you prefer to share your own personal calendar (or another calendar in your mailbox), you’ll need to log into Outlook.com (on the web) to share it. Right click on the calendar, choose Sharing Permissions then enter the name(s) and give the invitees either view or edit permission. If the recipient accepts the calendar in Outlook.com, the calendar will sync down to their Outlook and devices.
Users will be able to add new events to the shared calendars if they use Outlook on the web or a smartphone. At this time, the shared calendars are read-only in Outlook on the desktop.
Apple’s Two Factor Authentication requirement
As of June 15 2017, Apple now requires two factor authentication (2FA) be enabled if you want to use third party apps with your iCloud account. To do this, you need to enable 2FA on your device, then create app passwords at icloud.com. Use these in place of your password in Outlook and other email clients. You won’t need an app password with the iCloud utility in Windows, but will need to use the app password if you want to download icloud.com email (including me.com and mac.com) into Outlook.
So… if Outlook keeps asking for your iCloud password when you attempt to check for new mail, you’ll need to enable 2FA on your account and create an app password to use in Outlook.
