What’s New in New Outlook
There are a few new or updated features in new Outlook for March 2026. If these features are not in your new Outlook yet, they will be soon.
It is really annoying to switch folders and the message at the top of the folder is selected, not the message you had selected earlier. (And yes, sometimes it’s annoying that Outlook doesn’t select the top message when you switch folders.)
This is fixed in new Outlook. Now the selected message is preserved when changing folders and you won’t jump to the top of the list.
For Microsoft 365 business customers with online archives and shared mailboxes, they can now access the online archive for the shared mailbox in new Outlook. It will be in the mailbox’s folder list.
As I mentioned in the last issue, there are some improvements to Search folders. While they still lack the filters available in classic Outlook, new search options were added along with the ability to create a search folder for specific folders and by date.
There are more options for managing and editing signatures in Accounts > Signatures.
New Bug: Classic Outlook Crashes
There is a new bug in classic Outlook where it may crash and ask to restart in Safe mode.
This is the result of using an old build of classic Outlook with the newest version of the Teams add-in. Users with fairly recent builds of classic Outlook should be ok, only really old versions are affected.
The solution: update to the current version. If that is not possible, you’ll need to disable the Teams add-in in COM Add-ins.
1. Open Outlook in Safe Mode. You can hold down the Ctrl key the click the Outlook shortcut or press Windows key + R and type Outlook.exe /safe in the box then click OK.
2. Go to File > Options > Add-ins > Go.
3. On the COM Add-ins dialog, uncheck Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office then click OK.
Happy 30th Birthday Exchange Server and Outlook!
That’s right: Exchange Server is 30 years old and Outlook isn’t far behind. Outlook actually began as the Exchange client and shipped with Exchange server. It was updated, added to Office suite, and renamed in Office 97. The original Exchange client was very basic, although compared to more recent versions, Outlook 97 was a basic mail client too - it didn't even have rules and POP and IMAP support was awful back then.
So much has changed over the years, including rules, yet it’s still the same old Outlook with the separate Mail, Calendar, Contact modules. Sadly, I’m not sure if Outlook will make it to 50 but should make it to 40 before it’s retired in favor of new Outlook.
Exchange has had a lot of changes too, moving to Microsoft 365 Exchange online nearly 15 years ago and consumer accounts moving the Exchange online 10 years ago.

Save Calendar Views in New Outlook
The new Outlook and Outlook on the web now let you save specific calendar views. Although this feature isn’t as flexible as classic Outlook’s customization options, it does allow you to store your current view, including layout (day, week, or month) and which calendars are selected. You can't modify the calendar formats, but if you frequently change which calendars are displayed, saving a view can make things much easier. This capability isn’t available in classic Outlook.
You’ll find this option on the View tab within the calendar; simply click Saved Views > Save current View. To switch between saved views, just pick one from the Saved Views list.
