Sync New and Classic Outlook Calendars?
A user asked “My calendar in new Outlook and Classic Outlook are different. How do I sync them?” They went on to add that they are using a Gmail account.
The calendar in classic Outlook only syncs to the server if you use a Microsoft Exchange account. This includes outlook.com and Microsoft 365 business accounts.
When using a Gmail account, classic Outlook will not sync with the Gmail server. You’ll need to use a 3rd party utility or export the calendar and import into new Outlook, if that is the app you are going to keep using.
If you prefer to stick with classic Outlook, you will need a third-party utility. I recommend Gsyncit for syncing Gmail calendar (and contacts) with classic Outlook. It works with Gmail as well as many other servers.
For most users, I don't recommend using both Outlook apps as a rule. If you prefer classic Outlook, there is no rush to move to new Outlook; you can use classic until at least 2029.
If you don't have a preference, new Outlook will sync calendar and contacts with Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud accounts.
Email Links Open New Outlook
Users frequently complain that clicking mailto links in classic Outlook or on a web page opens a new email in new Outlook.
This is because Windows set the default app for mailto to new Outlook. You need to open Windows Settings, find Default apps then find Outlook in the list. Select the entries that are using new Outlook and choose classic Outlook.
In addition to mailto, .ics (appointments), .msg, .eml, and .oft (Outlook templates) are either set to use new Outlook or are blank and will ask you to choose an app the first time you open an attachment or a file.
Can’t See New Mail?
I’ve has a few questions over the last couple of weeks that went like this “My Inbox folder shows that I have new unread messages, but I can’t see them unless I use Search.”
When you do the search, are the messages in the Inbox?
In my experience with other users since the introduction of the Focused Inbox, the new messages are on the Other tab. If Search shows they are in the Inbox, they are probably on the Other tab.
If you don't like using Focused and Other tabs, you can turn it off.
In new Outlook or Outlook on the web, open View tab > View settings > Mail > Layout. The Focused setting is at the top of the page.
In classic Outlook, click on the By Date filter at the top of the Inbox. “Show Focused Inbox” is at the bottom of the menu. It’s also on the View ribbon as a large button.
In Outlook mobile, it’s in the Outlook Settings menu, under the Mail category.
In Outlook for Mac, you can turn focused inbox off or on from the View tab, select Turn on Focused Inbox or Turn off Focused Inbox.
