Exchange Server Mailing Lists

Microsoft Exchange Server does not have any specific built-in function for self-managing mailing lists to which users can subscribe themselves. However, as described by Tony Redmond in his May 1999 article for the Exchange & Outlook Administrator newsletter, it is possible to combine several Exchange Server functions to build at least a rudimentary list server. There are also several sample applications and third-party tools for this purpose. We also include tools for managing distribution lists in Exchange Server and groups in Exchange 2000/Windows 2000. Also see:
  • XADM- How to Create an Address List Based on the Group Membership of Users
  • If you have access to the Microsoft BackOffice Resource Kit, it contains two utilities which you may find useful for list server usage. The first, ExList, offers list server features for Exchange Server. The second, DL Update, is not an list server but allows Exchange users to subscribe to or remove themselves from Exchange Server distribution lists.  If you use DL Update, see XADM Error Message Failed to Get ADSI Object 8007203A.

    Tools

Active Groups   Use query-based rules to automate the creation and maintenance of Exchange Server and Windows 2000 Active Directory distribution lists and security groups, either on demand or with the integrated scheduler. Also includes HTML reports on membership and ownership of DLs and the ability to monitor DL usage, such as the last date of use.
Auto Distribution List   Distribution list code samples, free from The Exchange Code Exchange
AutoDL   Web-based e-mail and security group management tool for Exchange 2000. From the Exchange 2000 Resource Kit, with a later update available.
EvA   Replicates contacts from a database to Exchange Server 5.5 public folder or Global Address List on a schedule. Creates Exchange distribution lists based on database queries. Supports field mapping to custom Outlook contact forms.
Ikakura   Ikakura is an add-on application for Microsoft Exchange Server, to automate subscription to Exchange Server's "Distribution Lists". Ikakura is compatible with Exchange Server 5.x, 2000 and 2003. Independently tested and "Verified for Windows Server 2003". Version 4.0.0.1.
SmartDL   Build distribution lists based on queries against the Exchange 5.5 directory or Active Directory, either with or without Exchange Server, or from files, databases, or other external sources. Also provides tools for managing all types of DLs and groups and printing DL lists.
