Delay Send in Outlook

A new Outlook user had a question:

I’ve always used Outlook on the web and recently started using Outlook that came with my Office subscription. I really like the 10 second delay in Outlook on the web. Why doesn’t Outlook have this feature?

Outlook can do this, more or less. While it doesn’t have the 10 second delay, you can use an ‘after sending’ rule to delay the message for 1 minute. (That's more than less.)

Or you can turn off Send Immediately and click Send All after 10 seconds.

To create a rule to delay messages for 1 minute:

1. Open Manage Rules and Alerts.
2. Click New Rule
3. Choose “Apply rule on messages I send”
4. Click Next twice; with no conditions set, the rule will apply to all messages.
5. Choose the “defer delivery by a number of minutes” action.
6. Click on ‘a number of’ and set it to 1. (It can go as high as 120 minutes.)
7. Save your rule.

If you only want to delay some messages, you can set an exception, such as if assigned to a category, flagged, or sent to certain addresses.

Outlook’s People Pane

Outlook’s People pane will be completely removed from a future build of Outlook. It’s effectively dead in current builds of Outlook as the People Pane command is missing from the ribbon and you cannot turn the People Pane on.

It’s the last piece left from the Outlook Social Connector, as all of the social features were removed long ago. The People Pane was the best part though, offering a quick search results for recent messages from the sender or recipients.

Search for content in an email

This question came from a user: It’s always annoyed me that I can’t search in the body of an email in Outlook. I can use Ctrl+F in Word and Excel or to search a web page. Why can’t I search the body of an email? I don’t want to search all email, only the body of the email I have open.

Outlook desktop offers the same search functionality you have in Word, but the keyboard shortcut is different, since  Ctrl+F is used to Forward the message.

To search in a message body in Outlook for Windows, use F3 to open the Find and Replace dialog to the Find tab. You can use Ctrl+H (the keyboard shortcut for find and replace) to open the dialog, but it opens to the Replace tab and you'll need to switch to the Find tab.
