If you arenât using macros, macro security should definitely be set to disabled or signed macros only. If you use macros, you can sign your macro projects. See Using SelfCert to sign a macro for instructions to create a digital signature using SelfCert.
To check or change your macro settings
- Go to File, Options, Trust Center
- Click Trust Center Settings
- Select Macro Settings
Recommended setting is either disable all macros without notification or Notifications for digitally signed macros; all other macros disabled.
Sign your macros after youâre finished testing them because you'll need to remove the digital signature and resign the macros with each edit.
To check or change your Protected view settings
- Open Word
- Go to File, Options, Trust Center
- Click Trust Center Settings
- Select Protected view.
- All three options, Protected View for files originating from the Internet, from potentially unsafe locations, and Outlook attachments should be enabled.
If files on a network server or other location you trust are in Protected View because Office thinks the location is potentially unsafe, you can add the location to Trusted Locations, however, itâs not recommended to trust the Downloads folder.
Youâll need to repeat these steps in Excel and PowerPoint.
