You may get the message “Can’t create the item” when you click on a mailto: link in a web page.
Current Versions
For newer versions of Outlook, this may be the result of a problem with the setting for the default e-mail client. You need to set Outlook as the default email client in Window’s Control Panel, Internet Options. See To change the default e-mail program.
Obsolete Versions of Outlook
In older versions of Outlook, this problem may occur if you install Microsoft Exchange after installing Microsoft Outlook. See Can’t Create New Message from Office Shortcut Bar for more details.
