How to Order Outlook 2002 for an Exchange 2000  Installation

If you have Microsoft Exchange 2000, your client access license (CAL) allows you to use Outlook 2002 or any previous Outlook version without buying a separate license for Outlook. The problem is that Microsoft doesn't tell you how to get the Outlook 2002 CD. You can get it either by ordering an Outlook 2002 CD or by ordering the Exchange 2000 SP2 CD set (while it remains available).

NOTE: Ordering the SP2 CD for $9.95 does not get you a cheap copy of Outlook 2002 that you can immediately install anywhere. The Outlook 2002 CD is clearly labeled UNLICENSED SOFTWARE - Illegal without separate license from Microsoft and does not include a license key. You have to get the key from the Volume License folks, as described in Step 3 below. And to do that, you'll need Exchange 2000 and Exchange CAL license information.

Bart Kile was kind enough to share his experience in ordering an Outlook 2002 CD. These instructions assume that you are a Open or Select volume license customer.

How to Order

  1. Call Microsoft Worldwide Fulfillment at 800-248-0655 (U.S. or Canada). You will need your Exchange 2000 License # and Authorization #. For other countries, you may need to contact your local Microsoft office to obtain the appropriate Worldwide Fulfillment number. You can also email wwfordercenter@modusmedia.com.

  2. Order Part # 543-01148 (Outlook 2002)

(Alternatively, you can order the Exchange 2000 SP2 CD on the web. It includes Outlook 2002, but CD does not come with a license key. You have an Exchange 2000 license and follow Step 3 to get the key.)

  3. Call Microsoft Volume License at 888-352-7140 in the U.S. From other countries, use the number found at Worldwide Activation Center Telephone Numbers. You will need your License # and Authorization # for your Exchange CALs, plus your Exchange 2000 License # & Authorization #.

The response system will prompt: Press 1 - for Windows XP, Press 2 - for Office XP, Press 3 for all others. Make sure you press 3. (The Windows XP and Office XP license people don't know about Outlook 2002 and Exchange CALs.)

When you give the license numbers, make sure that you start with your Exchange CAL license.

Bart says he found that he needed to talk with a manager, because the first person on the phone really didn't know anything about Exchange or what to do.
