Microsoft Outlook 2002

Outlook 2002 addressed some longstanding deficiencies and improves connections to email servers. Note that there is no such thing as Outlook XP. Office XP is the name of the suite, but the individual product names use "2002."

    Availability

Outlook 2002 is included in all versions of the Office XP suite and is also available as a separate standalone program. You may also find it included with new PDA devices using Pocket PC 2002.

Exchange 2000 client access licenses (CALs) include the right to install Outlook 2002 or any earlier version. See How to Order Microsoft Outlook 2002 for an Exchange Server Installation.

Microsoft has told us that Exchange 5.5 CALs are good only for Outlook 2000 or earlier. Exchange 5.5 customers cannot install Outlook 2002 without buying a retail copy of Outlook 2002, a retail or upgrade copy of Office XP, or Exchange 2000 and sufficient CALs. (FYI, this information is still not available on Microsoft's web site.)

    System Requirements

Outlook 2002 requires Windows 98 or a later operating system. It will not run on Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51. See:
  • Office XP System Requirements
  • Outlook 2002 requires Internet Explorer 5.01 or later. See OL2002 Why Outlook Requires Internet Explorer 5 or Later to Install.

    Deployment

Office XP introduces product activation technology to prevent software piracy. This will affect mostly people who install retail versions of Office. Retail copies allow activation on only two machines, one desktop and one portable. See:
  • Software Piracy
  • Microsoft Office XP Product Activation -- in-depth information and video demos
  • Piracy Basics - Microsoft Product Activation
  • To deploy Office XP from an administrative install point using the Custom Installation Wizard, you must have an enterprise edition of Office, obtained through one of Microsoft's volume licensing programs. Or, you may have an enterprise edition of Outlook 2002, for use with Exchange 2000 client access licenses. For either, you will need to obtain a volume license key. See:

  • How to Order Microsoft Outlook 2002 for an Exchange 2000 Installation
  • Licensing: Volume License Product Keys
  • The latest version of the Office XP Resource Kit core tool set includes updated System Management Server package definition files.

Under certain conditions a PC to which Office XP was deployed using the enterprise edition may display a notice that activation is required. This notice appears in error. A hotfix is available. See OFFXP Reactivation Message When You Start a Program from Enterprise Edition.

Note that WordMail in Outlook 2002 works only if Word 2002 is installed. This may be something to consider if you're planning to roll out Outlook 2002, but not Office XP immediately.
