Outlook 98 Deployment Kit

Home > Outlook > Outlook 98 > Deployment Kit

The Outlook 98 Deployment Kit is designed to streamline installation of Outlook 98 in an organization. Unfortunately, you can't buy or download it separately. You can get it as part of the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 1 CD. It also is available through these channels -- Select, Open (both special channels for large customers), Microsoft Developer Network and Microsoft Solution Providers. For MSDN subscribers, it's on Disk 15 of the Backoffice Test Platform. See XCLN: Outlook Deployment Kit (ODK) Availability.

If all you want to do is customize Outlook Today or the Outlook Bar, you may find what you need in the Microsoft Outlook 98 Deployment Kit Documentation.

For Outlook 2000, the deployment tools are in the Office Resource Kit. See Outlook & Exchange Administrator Solutions.

Notes

The ODK also includes several .adm files for setting Outlook options with the Windows Policy Editor. See XCLN: Unable to Load Out98prf.adm with Poledit.

If you set the default mail format using the ODK, the user will not be able to switch formats. If you want users to be able to switch formats, you should leave the mail format option blank. (See the MSKB article XCLN: Message Format Unavailable After Outlook 98 Is Installed.) To restore the user's ability to switch formats, delete this Windows registry key (always make a backup of the registry first):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Options\Mail

Limitations

What the ODK does not allow you to do:
  • Set the default permission for the Calendar (or any other folder) to Reviewer so other people can see it. (FYI, this can be done using the ACL COM Component. There is a demonstration application in Sue Mosher's MEC 99 workshop samples.
