To find all unread messages no matter what folder they're in

In Outlook 2000, after you receive new mail, the Folder List opens to show any folders in the hierarchy that have new, unread items. Other than that, Outlook does not provide much help in locating unread items.

One method would be to use Advanced Find to search all your folders. HINT: The More Choices tab has an option for finding unread messages. If you use Advanced Find in this manner often, you might want to use File | Save Search to store your search criteria for easy reuse.

Otherwise, a few third-party tools provide some assistance in locating unread items.

Tools

ExLife Provides Inbox, Outbox and other folder rules with Boolean language for moving messages to different folders, adding addresses to your Address Book, sending replies, printing messages and attachments, saving attachments or messages, running programs. Plus there are profile-specific signatures for your Exchange messages, > quoting and attachments in replies, resend and many more useful features. Works with Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging and Microsoft Outlook (though the virtual folders feature to show unread messages can interfere with autoarchiving). To my knowledge, only ExLife is capable of moving messages to a Microsoft Mail shared folder.
Nelson Email Organizer Nelson Email OrganizerConversation tracking, searches, automatic refiling into folders, showing folders with unread messages and other features for e-mail management.
Simple Mail Handler Part of the BackOffice Resource Kit from Microsoft, archives and filters incoming messages. With help from Ben Goetter, I've worked out some installation and usage instructions. Works with both Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook, but not Outlook 2002.
