The primary Exchange account cannot be removed from Outlook 2010
When you configure multiple Exchange accounts in
Outlook 2010 and attempt to delete the first Exchange account, you'll receive
the following error:
The primary account cannot be removed unless it is
the only account in the profile. You must remove all other Exchange accounts
before removing the primary account.
Setting one of the other accounts the be
the default email account and data file doesn't help; you need to remove all
Exchange accounts from the profile as the first Exchange account is considered
the primary account and has to be removed last.
Although not
recommended or supported, you can edit the registry to remove the primary
assignment. If you mess up your profile, you will need to make a new profile,
which is what Microsoft recommends anyway.
To remove the primary account from
the registry, close Outlook and open the registry
editor. Go to the profile
key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Windows
Messaging SubSystem\Profile\profile-name
Export the profile keys then remove
one (or all) of the registry keys related to primary account. There are a number
of keys for each account, but only 1 or 2 need to be removed, which lessens the
chance of corrupting the profile. After some trial and error (and a few corrupt
profiles), I discovered which key needs to be deleted, however the key varies
with each profile. Fortunately, the name values within it don't change.
Search
the profile for 001e660b. This will contain your Exchange x500
address (/o=ORGNAME/ou=Exchange Administrative Group/cn=Recipients/cn=alias);
there are two keys containing this value for each
account in the profile. Deleting the second key that belongs to the primary account allowed me
to delete the primary account from Outlook's profile. (You can delete both keys
if you want to).
Open Control Panel, Mail and delete the account from your profile then open
Outlook.
When there are only two Exchange accounts in the profile, the remaining account
is made the primary account. When there are more than two Exchange accounts, one
of the accounts will be the new primary account.

Outlook Quick Tip: Count down the year
Do you need to know what day of the year today is or how many days are left
until the end of the year? Although Outlook doesn't display these numbers, it's
very easy to create a file counting the days using Excel and import it into your
calendar.
You can create a file with the Subject, Date, and a Category
using Excel's fill series feature then save it as a CSV to Import into Outlook's
Calendar. While a category is not required, it makes it easy to filter the
events. Using this method, you can import the events to any calendar.
You can use a HOL file to distribute all day events. In the CSV, use only the
Subject and Date fields then change the extension to HOL. Users can double click
on the HOL to open the Add Holidays dialog and add the dates to the default
calendar. When you use this method the events will be added to the Holiday category.
We have a sample HOL file at
http://www.slipstick.com/files/DayNumbers.HOL
Note: when you create a HOL file, you'll need
to change the line above the dates to a "location" and the number of items in
the "location" group, in " [location]366 " format. (The location name can be
anything you like. )
Thanks for the tip, Alawishes.
April Updates: Outlook 2010 and the Social connector
An update was released for Outlook 2010 earlier this week which addresses
two issues with Outlook when used with Exchange server mailboxes. The first
issue involves recurring meeting reminders when using online mode, the second
apples to users with the online archive feature enabled.
In addition,
two Outlook Social Connector updates were released, one for the OSC and one for
the SharePoint Provider. These updates improve the stability and performance if
the Social Connector. An update for the Facebook Provider was released in
January.
