Apple's iOS4 and Sync issues

Since the release of iPhone4 and iOS4 there have been some issues reported by users trying to sync Exchange with the new iPhones or older devices using the updated software. Email, calendar, or contacts are not syncing and Exchange administrators are seeing heavier loads on their servers caused by users with these devices.

In a support article, Apple suggests administrators change the timeout for the Exchange ActiveSync connection to four minutes, which should be long enough for the majority of users. This change can be pushed out using an iOS profile. If four minutes is too long or not long enough, the XML file can be edited to increase the number of seconds. This should fix the problems syncing Email, calendar and contacts over EAS, as well as reduce the load on the server.

We're also seeing complaints that syncing Outlook calendars using the MobileMe service is not working since the update to iTunes 9.2. No word yet on a fix for this. On a more positive note, it appears that the updated iTunes works with Outlook 2010 (both 32 and 64 bit).

Outlook 2010 Bug: Duplicate Messages in POP3

When a user has multiple POP3 accounts in Outlook and each account delivers to the same PST file (single Inbox) and has "Leave a copy of messages on the server" enabled, Outlook downloads the same messages every time it Sends/Receives. When the accounts are delivered to separate PST files, the accounts work as expected: each message downloaded once.

Since Outlook works as expected when the accounts are delivered to separate pst files, until this is fixed, set each account to use their own pst file.

Outlook 2010 Bug: Default Reminders

I could easily make this issue all about Outlook 2010 bugs but this will be my last bug for this week. The latest: When users attempt to change the Calendar's Default reminder from 15 minutes to a value of 1 day or more, the new value isn't saved.

Outlook Quick Tip: CPAO and Personal Folder backup for Outlook 2010

Two popular Microsoft utilities for Outlook now support Outlook 2010 - the Calendar Printing Assistant and Personal Folders Backup utility.

The updated Calendar Printing Assistant supports Outlook 2010, both 32 and 64 bit versions (and Outlook 2007). I didn't notice anything different between the earlier CPAO and the new one, other than it works with Outlook 2010, so I see little reason for existing users to upgrade to it.

Users who want to use the Personal Folders Backup tool can edit the registry to enable it with Outlook 2010.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\Microsoft.OutlookBackup.1
DWORD: RequireShutdownNotification
Value: 1

Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Microsoft Office
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/choose-the-32-bit-or-64-bit-version-of-microsoft-office-HA010369476.aspx
Office 2010 provides support for the 32-bit version of Office 2010 programs running on 64-bit operating systems by using WOW64, a compatibility environment provided by the operating system that allows a 32-bit application to run on a Windows 64-bit operating system. Using the 32-bit version of Office 2010 allows people to continue to use existing third-party add-ins for Office that are 32-bit. The 32-bit version of Office 2010 is the recommended option for most users, because it prevents potential compatibility issues with other 32-bit applications, specifically third-party add-ins that are available only for 32-bit operating systems.

To use the Personal Folders backup utility with Outlook 2010, you need to add edit registry data to allow Outlook to complete the backup process at shutdown. See the KB article for details.

Until RIM releases an update to Desktop Manager, the options available for BIS users to sync Calendar and Contacts with Outlook 2010 are limited.
