Exchange Server 2010 and Archive Folders

by Michael B. Smith, MCSE/Exchange MVP

In Exchange Server 2010, Microsoft has deprecated “Managed Folders” and replaced those with “Retention Policies”. Unfortunately, at Release-To-Manufacturing (RTM, that is – when Exchange Server 2010 originally shipped), you cannot control Retention Policies via the Exchange Management Console (in other words, while using a GUI tool) and when attempting to control Retention Policies via the Exchange Management Shell (that is, while using a CLI – command-line interface) you could not specify specific policies for specific message types (this was a bug in the RTM version of Exchange Server 2010 and has since been corrected). Service Pack 1 for Exchange Server 2010 will allow the Exchange administrator to create, delete, and modify Retention Policies (and their associated Retention Tags) from within the Exchange Management Console.

Outlook 2010 Contact Activities

An Outlook user had this question: "After upgrading to Outlook 2010 the contact activities list shows only e-mail no matter what is selected in the Show: dialog box. This showed all linked activities in 2007. Is there a setting I am missing?"

If you are using the same profile and *.pst and didn't import, Activities will only be listed by item. Activities' "All Items" lists all items that were mailed - meeting and task requests listed there are from mail folders (usually the Sent folder), not your Tasks folder and Calendar.

Exchange Quick Tip: Block Outbound Read Receipts?

An administrator asked: "We want to stop read receipts from going outside our organization. Will the Global setting for Internet message formats option of "Allow delivery reports" do this?"

Yes, that option will allow you to control read receipts to remote domains. "Allow delivery reports" applies to read receipts to remote domains. You'll want to leave the option deselected.

"Allow non-delivery reports" applies to NDRs. If you want to allow NDRs to be sent to remote domains, you'll need to select this option. Deselect this option if you don't want to send NDRs.
