Today's highlights:

Regular features:

Are public folders only good for email now?

An Exchange administrator asks "Are public folders only good for email now? I would like to create a public folder for Contacts and one for Calendar Events. I know that Microsoft has decided to de-emphasis public folders. But we cannot use a public folder for Contacts or Calendar Events? Or, am I missing something in the cmdlets?"

Yes, you are missing something, but not with the cmdlets. The Exchange 2007 management console and shell do not offer a way to create other folder types. You'll need to create the folders for other folder types on the client side after public folders are enabled in Exchange 2007.

Exchange 2007 SP1 makes public folder management somewhat easier as it provides a GUI for public folder management, but you'll still need to use Outlook to create other folder types and to manage the permissions on non-mail folder types.

Outlook 2007: "Add-in cannot be loaded"

I'm seeing a lot of issues with add-ins after users upgrade to Outlook 2007, or use Windows Easy Transfer to move applications and settings to a Vista system.

The error message will say something along these lines:
"The Add-In "[name]" cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the Add-In manufacturer for an update. If no update is available, please uninstall the Add-In."

To disable the add-in, go to Tools, Trust Center, Add-ins. At the bottom of the page is a drop down which says "Manage: COM Add Ins". The choices on this menu are COM Add-ins, Exchange Client Extensions and Disabled Add-ins.

Whether you need to disable it in COM add-ins or Exchange extensions depends on the type of add-in. Most add-ins are COM add-ins but a few are listed under both COM add-ins and Exchange extensions and can only be disabled using the Exchange Extensions dialog. If you try to disable an Exchange extension that is listed in COM add-ins, you'll get the following error: "The connected state of Office Add-in registered in HKEY_LOCAL_Machine cannot be changed." Close the dialog and look for it under Exchange extensions.

Exchange 2007: Extending the Schema

Like Exchange 2000 and 2003, extending the schema involves importing .ldf files (in this case, 100 of them for Exchange 2007); however, unlike Exchange 2000 and 2003, importing them with LDIFDE is not supported.

Extending the Schema independently from the Exchange 2007 installation is most common where there is a separation of responsibility between directory services and messaging. Company policy may forbid an Exchange administrator from holding Schema Admin membership, which is required for this step, or it may be beneficial in some topologies to have Schema updates completed well before installing components that require it, basically allowing for replication time.

The command line syntax to extend the schema, as run from the root of the Exchange 2007 media is:

>setup.com /PrepareSchema

If there are domain controllers not yet at Windows 2003 SP1 or higher, then a domain controller that is at that level should be specified in the command.

>setup.com /PrepareSchema /DomainController:<fqdn>

VERIFY THE SCHEMA IS PROPERLY EXTENDED

Whether the Exchange 2007 Setup Wizard (setup.exe) or the command line setup tool (setup.com) is used to prepare Active Directory and domains, there is an attribute in Active Directory that will confirm that the last .ldf file was properly imported.

ADSIEdit is a good tool for looking at specific known attributes in the Active Directory but it is not installed by default in Windows. It is included on the Windows media, in with the support tools. After installing the support tools, open ADSIEdit.asc. This is an MMC interface rendering Active Directory as a schema tree. Expand the Schema container for the forest so the objects are listed in the right pane. Scroll down to CN=ms-Exch-Schema-Version-Pt. Double click on this object to open the list of attributes as seen in Figure 1.

Figure 1

Many of the attributes do not hold a value, so checking the box beside “Show only attributes that have values” will make the window contents easier to navigate. Scroll down to the rangeUpper attribute. If it has a value of 10637 as shown in Figure 1, then the Schema was successfully extended. You can scroll through the objects in ADSIEdit and see the many CN=ms-Exch-* objects there are.

This is the same method used for Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 forestprep. Exchange 2000 held a value of 4397 while Exchange 2003 showed a rangeUpper value of 6870.

Notes:
1) From the command line, it is not necessary to use .com after setup, as that will be assumed.
2) The setup parameters or switches have abbreviated notations as well. For /PrepareSchema we can use /ps.
3) The installer for the Support Tools is called SUPTOOLS.msi. I keep reading it as though I am asking the tools what is up. ‘sup, tools?!
