Greetings! Welcome to Vol. 6, No. 26, 24 Apr 2002, of Exchange Messaging
Outlook, a biweekly newsletter about Microsoft Exchange and
Microsoft Outlook.
Klez virus protection
Worried about the Klez virus? Make sure that you have all the
latest updates for Internet Explorer. A fix for the vulnerability
that Klez exploits has been out for more than a year. Installing
Outlook 2002, Office 2000 Service Release 2, or the Outlook Email
Security Update also offers protection. For more information on
protection from HTML mail-related viruses, see "HTML Mail
Vulnerability Updates for Microsoft Outlook" at
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/htmlmail.htm
We also recommend that Outlook 2002 users discontinue use of
WordMail as their email editor because of a potentially serious
vulnerability uncovered by Georgi Guninski. (See
http://www.guninski.com/m$oxp-2.html). Outlook 2000 + WordMail
is not vulnerable to this exploit.
Learn Outlook programming from Sue Mosher
This issue of EMO may be a little less newsy than usual, because
I'm spending most of my time revising my Outlook programming book.
The new edition is called "Microsoft Outlook Programming Jumpstart
for Administrators, Power Users, and Developers." It will be
published later this year by Digital Press (http://www.bh.com/digitalpress/)
as part of their extensive line of Exchange and Outlook books,
easily the deepest of any publisher.
If you would like to be notified when the book is available,
click the URL below and send us a message. We'll keep your address
on file for the announcement, but won't use it for any other mailing
or provide it to any third party.

How to add a disclaimer in Exchange 2000
I still think that corporate disclaimers at the bottom of mail
messages are a waste of bandwidth. But, obviously many people
disagree. Microsoft has published three articles on how to create an
Exchange 2000 protocol event sink to add disclaimers. You have a
choice of Visual Basic or VBScript versions:
HOW to Add A Disclaimer to Outgoing SMTP Messages In VB
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q317327
HOW TO Add a Disclaimer to Outgoing SMTP Messages in VBScript
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q317680
The "fine print" in these articles is that the steps they
describe, by themselves, will not put a disclaimer on messages
created by Outlook, because Outlook messages go through MAPI, not
the SMTP transport. Therefore, you need to follow the instructions
in this additional article to set up another SMTP server. Otherwise,
messages created with Outlook will not carry the disclaimer.
PRB SMTP Transport Event Does Not Fire For MAPI Messages

If you prefer to avoid the do-it-yourself approach and use a
commercial product, there are many to choose from. See

MSMIUG closing
One of the most venerable user groups dedicated to Exchange, the
Microsoft Mail International Users Group (MSMIUG), based in the
U.K., got its start back when Microsoft Mail was the platform of
choice for its members. In recent years, members of the group have
been involved in the migration of 500,000 seats to Exchange and have
shared their experiences in many case studies presented at MSMIUG
meetings. I was privileged to speak at one of its quarterly
conferences a few years ago and found a very enthusiastic audience
eager for practical advice.
Now, MSMIUG is closing down its operations and will no longer be
offering conferences and seminars. It will, however, maintain its
discussion forum for Exchange administrators and managers in the
U.K. and Ireland (but open to all). You can contact
chairman@msmiug.org for
information on joining.
We wish nothing but the best to all who have made MSMIUG a great
resource for Exchange administrators, especially chairman Karl
Pountney.
