Greetings! Welcome to Vol. 2, No. 11 of Exchange Messaging Outlook, an occasional newsletter about Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging and Microsoft Outlook, both for users of Windows 95 and NT 4.0 and for organizations using Microsoft Exchange Server.
Today's highlights:
Regular features:
The second public beta for Microsoft Outlook 98 is now available. You can download it (15-33mb via http or 85mb via ftp if you want to install on more than one computer) or order it on CD. For details, see my page at http://www.slipstick.com/exchange/ol98.htm.
If you downloaded the first version of the Outlook 98 public beta, you'll want to get Beta 2 before time runs out. Beta 1 expires December 31; Beta 2 is good until May 1, 1998.
The biggest change in this version is the addition of fax support for the Internet Mail Only (IMO) mode. It's less than minimal -- no scheduling and you can't send to both fax and e-mail recipients with a single message.
Now that fax has been added to IMO mode, I think it's high time for Microsoft to come up with more meaningful names than "Internet Mail Only" and "Corporate or Workgroup Support" to describe the two very different flavors of Outlook 98.
As with any beta, there are potential "gotchas." You're urged to read our guide and the Readme.txt before you install. These known issues stand out:
The Readme.txt file refers to "Microsoft At Work Fax." What it means is the Microsoft Fax component from Windows 95.
WabOut Version 2
A very welcome update to a favorite Outlook utility, now with features for Exchange and Windows Messaging users, too: WabOut version 2.0 adds export support for all versions of Internet Mail and Outlook Express (even Japanese!) and support for import to the Personal Address Book, in addition to Outlook Contacts. Addresses imported into Outlook Contacts are automatically resolved, without the need to run a helper program or perform Check Names on every record. Now in both Lite (free) and Pro versions at http://www.empire.net/~level/Connected.html.
Microsoft Outlook Administrator's Guide
Microsoft has collected dozens of tips and techniques into a comprehensive guide at http://www.microsoft.com/outlook/adminguide/default.htm that's a must for anyone responsible for installing and supporting Outlook 97. I pointed Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 to it and subscribed down to one level of links, so that I can have it handy for offline use any time I need it. (You might try that with our Outlook FAQ at http://www.slipstick.com/exchange/outlfaq.htm, too; it's the easiest way to get a copy you can use offline.)
Chilton Preview
Updated version of popular preview pane for Microsoft Outlook 97 (and Outlook 98). The update turns off preview in Tasks and Contacts folders, adds hypertext support to rich-text display, adds support for attachments that are messages and introduces more configuration options. The installation procedure has changed; be sure to read the Readme.txt file for important instructions.
