Greetings! Welcome to Vol. 2, No. 10 of Exchange Messaging Outlook, an occasional newsletter about Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging and Microsoft Outlook, both for users of Windows 95 and NT 4.0 and for organizations using Microsoft Exchange Server.

Today's highlights:

Regular features:

Microsoft Outlook 98 public beta

Microsoft released an "early" public beta of Outlook 98 late last week. You can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/outlook/outlook98/. For more details, visit our Outlook 98 page at http://www.slipstick.com/exchange/ol98.htm.

No formal product support is available. You can interact with other Outlook 98 beta users in two public newsgroups, one for setup issues (news:microsoft.public.outlook_beta.setup), the other for general Outlook 98 beta issues (news:microsoft.public.outlook_beta). Both of these newsgroups on the msnews.microsoft.com server are officially peer-to-peer, but Microsoft representatives are present and answering questions.

Important things to know before downloading OL98

Outlook 98 requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0. If you do not have MSIE4 on your system, Outlook 98 setup will install it, upgrading MSIE3 if necessary.

The download is 14-33mb, depending on whether you already have MSIE4 and which configuration you choose. However, you may need as much as 124mb of free space for the installation.

You must choose to install either Internet Mail Only (IMO) and Corporate/Workgroup mode. IMO supports POP3, LDAP and IMAP and can be used to access only Internet mail accounts; fax support will be added in the next OL98 beta. Corporate/Workgroup does not include LDAP and IMAP support, but will allow you to use any type of MAPI transport (Exchange Server, MS Mail, CompuServe, various fax services and so on).

You cannot run Outlook 97 and Outlook 98 on the same computer.

This beta expires on January 1, 1998. Microsoft plans to post a second public beta before the end of 1997.

Newsgroups and Net Folders in OL98

OL98 handles newsgroup reading and posting through a news-only version of Outlook Express, rather than through folders integrated into Outlook. On the main Outlook menu, choose Go | News or look on the Start | Programs menu for Microsoft Outlook Newsreader.

After downloading and installing the main program, you can add Net Folders from http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/outlook/cd/addcomp/addcom.htm to share contacts and calendars without Microsoft Exchange Server.

The Microsoft Outlook E-mail and Fax Guide

I'm putting the finishing touches on The Microsoft Outlook E-mail and Fax Guide, your complete guide to mail and fax with Outlook 97. It covers the IMEP patch, Rules Wizard and Exchange Server features in depth, including those available with Outlook 8.03, which will be released this week. The Guide should be available next month.

There are two ways to order. You can get the Guide directly from the publisher, Duke Press, by visiting http://www.dukepress.com/dukepress/onebook1.cfm?nextbook=117, calling 1-800-621-1544 or sending a fax to 1-970-663-4007. Or, you should be able to place an advance order through your favorite local bookstore by using ISBN number 1-882419-82-0. Ordering through a local store tells them that this is a book that belongs on their shelves, so I encourage you to go that route.

Outlook & Exchange user groups

Several people have written to ask for help in organizing Outlook or Exchange user groups around the country. For Exchange, look for a local Windows NT user's group. These organizations often have Microsoft Exchange Server sections.

For Outlook users, if you already have a user group, please send me an e-mail or web address, and I'll include that information in a future EMO newsletter and at the Slipstick Systems Exchange Center web site. If you are in New England or New York City and are interested in joining an Outlook/Exchange user group, write me at oluser@slipstick.com and I'll put you in touch with other people in your area who are looking for kindred spirits.
