Greetings! Welcome to Vol. 2, No. 9 of Exchange Messaging Outlook, an occasional newsletter about Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging and Microsoft Outlook, both for users of Windows 95 and NT 4.0 and for organizations using Microsoft Exchange Server.

Today's highlights:

Regular features:

Updating MSN Mail to POP3

There is good news and bad news from the Microsoft Network. The good news is that the conversion to standard Internet POP3 mail servers is well under way with the distribution of thousands of MSN 2.5 CDs. MSN members in the U.S. can order the CD from http://free.msn.com/upgrade/default.asp?campaign=XLQT-DM-A539. Outside the U.S., look in Member Services under MSN Software Updates for information. Or, look under the Classic tree for a file called Update to MSN 2.5. If all else fails, send a message to Member Services.

The bad news is that users of Microsoft Exchange and Windows Messaging are left out in the cold. To access the new mail servers, you need a mail program that supports Secure Password Authentication (SPA). MSN 2.5 automatically installs Outlook Express, which includes SPA. You can also get SPA by installing the IMEP patch for Microsoft Outlook 97 or the Office 97 Service Release 1 (though sometimes IMEP fails to install with SR-1). But if all you have is Exchange or Windows Messaging, you're out of luck and will need to stick to the Microsoft Network service to get your mail the old "classic" way.

Once you get the MSN 2.5 CD, visit our page at http://www.slipstick.com/exchange/msnpop3.htm for details on how to get Outlook 97 working with your migrated mail account and what you'll need to do to your address book to avoid "no transport provider" messages.

Windows NT users: While MSN still doesn't have software for NT, you will be able to access your mail with Outlook+IMEP after you migrate the mailbox. Run the MSN 2.5 software on a Windows 95 machine to make the changes in the mailbox, then install Outlook 97+IMEP or Outlook Express on your NT system.

Exchange Server 5.5 unveiling

The next version of Exchange Server, 5.5, is due to be released later this month at Comdex in Las Vegas. It will include an update for Outlook 97 -- version 8.03 -- with tweaks like mailbox scripting and incremental downloads of offline address books -- that will make it worth updating your clients. See http://www.slipstick.com/exchange/ol803.htm for more about the new Outlook 8.03.

Office 97 SR-1 international versions

International versions of the Office 97 SR-1 patch (aka Outlook 8.02) are now available for download in German, Dutch, Swedish, Italian, French and Spanish. Norwegian, Hungarian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Czech and Finnish versions should also be appearing soon.

Outside the U.S., to order the Enterprise Update CD (highly recommended if you have a full retail copy of Office 97), call your local Microsoft subsidiary. If you don't know who to call, you can get the number from http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/.

WinFax Pro
Version 8.02 adds an option to log uncompleted calls and fixes a problem on Windows NT with running from just an adminstrator account. Caution, though: Messages on the symantec.support.winnt.winfax8.general newsgroup indicate mixed results. Some users had problems after installing the 8.02 patch over the 8.01 patch. An apparently successful upgrade method is to export any messages, faxes, phone books, cover pages that you want to keep; then removee WinFax, reinstall it from the 8.0 CD, then install the 8.02 patch. The news server is service.symantec.com if your local server doesn't carry it.
