Greetings! Welcome to issue #13 of Exchange Messaging Outlook (formerly Exchange Center Update), an occasional newsletter about Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging and Microsoft Outlook, both for users of Windows 95 and NT 4.0 and for organizations using Exchange Server.
Today's highlights:
Regular features:
Service Pack 4 for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0
While the birthday party for Microsoft Exchange Server was going on with live chats, Service Pack 4 for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0 was quietly posted on the Microsoft FTP site. The English version can be found at ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/exchange/exchange-public/fixes/Eng/Exchg4.0/Sp4/. You should be able to find your language version from there.
Note that this is a "delta" update. It must be installed over Service Pack 2. As always, get the Readme.rtf file for exact instructions.
Here is a list of the client fixes from the readme.rtf file:

Microsoft Exchange Server 5.0 and Microsoft Outlook 8.01 trial version
From the MSEXCHANGE mailing list for Microsoft Exchange Server comes word that CDs with the 120-day trial version of Microsoft Exchange Server 5.0 and Microsoft Outlook aren't shipping yet and won't be going out until next week at the earliest. If you can't wait, you can download it from http://www.exchangeserver.com/trial/.
A 120-day trial version (30mb), which is labeled for NT but also works with Win95, can be downloaded from the Exchange Community site. BUT if you already have Microsoft Office 97 and don't connect to Exchange Server 5.0, don't waste the on-line time. What's in this update is aimed specifically and Exchange Server 5.0 users. For information on what's new in version 8.01, see http://www.microsoft.com/kb/articles/q163/7/43.htm.
Note that you don't need this version of Microsoft Outlook to connect to Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0 or 5.0. The version in the Office 97 box works fine; it just doesn't have the additional 5.0 features.
Microsoft Exchange Server IMC/IMS explained in full
Spring is finally coming to Moscow. It's about 60 degrees today, and the kids outside my window are in shorts, riding bikes and playing roller hockey. That seemed to make it a perfect day for a little light reading, so I picked up the slimmest book on my pile, The Microsoft Exchange Server Internet Mail Connector, by Spyros Sakellariadis. In about 200 pages, it demystifies not just the IMC/IMS (yes, Exchange Server 5.0 is covered), but also explains in crisp detail DNS, SMTP, MIME, connector models, message tracking and so on. The list of references, for those who want to explore these topics even further, is quite extensive. You can order this book through the Slipstick Systems Exchange Center Bookstore at http://www.slipstick.com/exchange/exchbstr.htm or directly from the publisher, Duke Press, at http://dukepress.com/home/WINNT.htm. To get it from your local bookstore, just ask for ISBN 1-882419-60-X.
If you have found a particularly book helpful in your life as an Exchange or Outlook user or administrator, we'd be happy to include your review here in the Exchange Messaging Outlook and add your comments to the information at the Bookstore. Just write me at sue@slipstick.com.
