Greetings! Welcome to issue #2 of Exchange Center Update, a newsletter about Microsoft Exchange, both for users of Windows 95 and for organizations using Exchange Server.
Today's highlights:
Introducing the Exchange Center Wish List
Many of you write asking whether you can do X, Y or Z with Exchange. Chances are that an add-on or widget already exists. I'm finding a dozen or so new ones each week!
So, a regular feature of this newsletter is going to be the Exchange Center Wish List. (Thanks to Scott Marquardt for the idea!) I'll take your requests for utilities and list what's available to do the job. Many of these are also listed on the Exchange Center page at my web site (which I updated yesterday), and I'll be reorganizing the Exchange Center to make it easier for you to browse the wish list.
To get things started, here are some Exchange wishes that can come true:
Direct OCR of Microsoft Fax .AWD faxes
This is your lucky day. There is not one, but two new products to convert incoming faxes into text:
Cfax Pro For-A-Change (http://www.cfax.com/change.htm - this link seems to be broken)
OmniPage Pro (http://www.caere.com/live/content/products/amaretto/amaretto.htm)
POP3 server for Microsoft Exchange Server
With POP3 capability, Unix, Eudora and other mail clients can access Exchange Server messages. Microsoft is working on an add-on, but there's one you can download and evaluate today: STS, Ltd. (http://www.sts.co.il/pop3.htm)
Get mail from multiple POP3 accounts
This one may require more patience. I've had some WinSock problems getting it to work, but in theory, it will do the job -- and post newsgroup messages in Microsoft Mail shared folders. (Running standalone? Then just create a Microsoft Mail postoffice on your own hard drive.)
Internet Series for Microsoft Mail (http://www.netapps.com/)
A 30-day trial version is available. Set it up to operate in either Personal mode or, if you need Internet mail access for lots of people without their own modems, in Office mode.
Deming Preview update
Since I mentioned in Vol. 1 of Exchange Center Update, many of you have tried Deming Preview and had some problems with it. The folks at Deming have been very responsive and are up to version 1.06 now, so you might want to get a new copy.
One tip: If you don't see the menu choice or toolbar button for the preview pane, copy msvcrt40.dll from a machine that does have it working. Sometimes the setup doesn't install this DLL correctly. You can also get a zipped version from ftp://ftp.deming.com/pub.
Let's talk about Internet mail
In the next issue of Exchange Center Update, I want to spend some time on sending and receiving mail via the Internet, using various Exchange services. If you haven't already, I'd recommend that you digest Ben Goetter's FAQ at http://www.halcyon.com/goetter/exclifaq.htm. Ben is not only the author of some of the best Exchange widgets around, but he also has explained a lot of the ins and outs of MIME and the oddities of accessing the Internet with Exchange.
With that under your belt, drop me a line at mailto:Sue_Mosher@msn.com and let me know what's still bothering you. I'll try to lay out the issues, point out the workarounds and admit where there's just nothing that can be done.
