Exchange Center Update, Vol. 1 - April 30, 1996

Greetings! Welcome to the first issue of Exchange Center Update, a newsletter about Microsoft Exchange, both for users of Windows 95 and for organizations using Exchange Server.

Today's highlights:

Introducing this newsletter

I decided to start this newsletter to help get the word out the many new add-ons, updates and techniques available for Microsoft Exchange. I've been working intensively with Exchange for many months now, starting with my work on the new Que book, Microsoft Office Expert Solutions. That's grown into an extensive FAQ, which you'll find at my web site, and a new book -- The Exchange User's Handbook, which I'm writing for Duke Press (publishers of Windows NT magazine).

This newsletter is devoted to Exchange client issues. If you're mainly interested in Exchange Server setup and administration, I'd suggest that you join the MSEXCHANGE mailing list. Send a message to msexchange-request@mail.insite.co.uk with a message saying "SUBSCRIBE" (without quotes or other punctuation).

So how did your name get on my mailing list? Chances are you dropped me an e-mail asking a question about Exchange. It's difficult for me to handle all those e-mail inquiries, so I'd like to use this vehicle as a way to give you some of the answers you need, if you can't find them in my FAQ or in the Microsoft Knowledgebase.

If you'd rather not receive this newsletter, then just drop me a line at Sue_Mosher@msn.com, and I'll take you off the list.

If you received this newsletter as a forward from someone else and would like your own copy, just e-mail me at Sue_Mosher@msn.com.

For those of you who stick with the newsletter, I promise I won't flood your Inbox. You can expect to see just a few messages from me each month.

Deming Preview for Exchange

For a fantastic enhancement to Exchange, get Deming Preview for Exchange at http://www.deming.com/preview/. This freeware plug-in gives Exchange a third pane, where you can preview messages without opening them. In the preview pane, Internet links are hot (blue underlined), just like in the Exchange Server clients.

Update to the fax cover page archive problem

If you've used Microsoft Fax much at all, you've no doubt encountered a problem using cover pages right after you do a backup. Microsoft has posted a fix at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/software/updates.htm. It replaces the AWFXCG32.DLL file.

New Internet Mail client

At that same location, you can find a new Internet Mail service provider for Exchange. I'm still trying to find out exactly what it fixes, but apparently the time zone problem is resolved. This is also a must update if you're using the Exchange Server client for Win95 and also use Internet Mail.

Support via Microsoft's NNTP newsgroups

In case you hadn't heard, Microsoft has moved its main support effort to new NNTP newsgroups at msnews.microsoft.com. This is going really well, and I encourage you to post your questions there. Microsoft engineers are playing an active role, as are MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) like myself.
