Installing Microsoft Outlook under Windows 98

Unlike Windows 95, Windows 98 does not include support for Microsoft Fax or the workgroup postoffice as part of the operating system. Since these also are not included with Microsoft Outlook, if you need to use them, you need to be careful about the installation sequence. Below you will find suggested steps for adding Microsoft Outlook 97 and 98 to a new Windows 98 system, with support for Microsoft Fax or the workgroup postoffice. These scenarios are not fully tested. Your mileage may vary.

Outlook 98 with  Microsoft Fax

  1. Install Outlook 98, making sure you get the Corporate/Workgroup mode by following our procedure for Controlling the mode choice.
  2. Run Awfax.exe from the Windows 98 CD, as described under Installing Windows Messaging under Windows 98.
  3. Add the Fax Update component by following the steps on our Components page.
  4. Using Control Panel | Mail and Fax, configure a profile containing the Microsoft Fax, Personal Folders, Outlook Address Book and Personal Address Book services.
