Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 3

Service Pack 3 for Exchange Server 5.5 is available for download (except for Outlook 2000) and on CD (complete version, including Outlook 2000). The list of files to download and brief installation instructions are given in the Readme file. (Note that these links are to the English-language version).

For detailed information, download and run the self-extracting Sp3_55dc.EXE file (15mb -- yes, 15mb). Also see:

    A fix is available for a significant problem related to SP3 and Outlook Web Access when Office 2000 is also running on the client. See XWEB: Attachments Cannot Be Opened in OWA 5.5 SP3.

    If you are using Exchange Server 5.5 as part of Small Business Server 4.5, there is apparently no problem applying SP3.

    FYI, if you want to run Exchange Server on Windows 2000, Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 3 is required. See XADM Versions of Exchange Server Supported on Windows 2000 Server.

    The essential new feature in SP3 is the Mailbox Manager, a tool to automatically mail retention policies by automatically cleaning user mailboxes according to criteria and schedules set by the administrator. See

    Other new features include:

  • An anti-virus interface to enable third-party products to hook into the Exchange store to scan attachments. See XADM: Understanding How the Antivirus API Scans Attachments.
  • MTA Mixer -- To map between X.400 and SMTP addresses, for organizations that need to relay mail between those two systems.
    •

    The service pack also include address book templates in different languages and Outlook Web Access language packs. 

    Client Updates

    		 The CD version of Service Pack 3 includes Outlook 2000 for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT. This version adds more robustness to the offline address book for remote Exchange Server users. See:

    Files for other clients are no longer available online. You'll need to locate an Exchange 5.5 SP3 CD (from an MSDN subscription) to get these files:

  • Macintosh client
  • Windows 16-bit Outlook client. Note that this is not really an update, the files are dated Oct 1997.
    •

    If you need multi-language address templates, these are now included in the Sp3_55su.exe (30mb) file or on the CD under \Client\Template.
